Learning power chords was a big part of my playing. I often use the octave, as shown. It sounds fuller. But sometimes not using the octave works better ( like using some blues patterns) If you have two guitar players in a band, or a keyboard player, have one play ope chords and a guitar on power chords, it really works for some songs. It also helped my bass playing. Or if you have two guitars, they both play power chords in different places, and sometimes different octaves. And you can have one going up and one down to the same power chord. Of course using 4ths (or reverse 5ths) is the 5th and octave of a power chord, which Ritchie Blackmore used a lot. So much to do after getting the basics. Good intro video.

When I was young and (even more) foolish, I read in Sounds that for Joe Walsh power chords were a speciality. Never heard of them before and reckoned they must be barre chords played very loudly 🙄
