As someone who LOVES Power Metal - I can take a joke and find the humour in it. However what a lot of people on the outside don't get about Power Metal - is how genuinely emotionally resonant it is. Some music, for example bands like Nirvana - express emotional vulnerability, and people can relate to that. Power Metal is often an expression of invulnerability. It resonates deeply with a fantasy within us to escape from our vulnerable lives. Our mental health struggles(I have Aspergers, but it applies to all fans too). It gives us strength - it helps us feel ten feet tall, like we could conquer the world. It's easy to mock the funny side of it, even I do that myself. But I have to assert that there is an incredible healing quality to the escapism of the fantasy expressed in this music. Sure - Nirvana's vulnerability may have saved many lives. But the invulnerability I've felt when listening to Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Manowar etc. has saved mine. Strength in the darkest of times. As much as we can laugh about it from the outside - from the inside, it means a lot. I make no apologies for unreservedly LOVING Power Metal.

quick storytime about sabaton: i‘m from germany and started taking driving lessons at age 17 and on my very first drive on the autobahn (it was dark, really cold and there was a rainstorm happening) and on the way back (it was like a 90min drive) my driving instructor told me that i should drive faster (i drove at like 170km/h or 105mph) and then he turned on the radio and he started playing sabaton (i think one of the songs was „ghost division“) i almost shat myself because i couldnt see a thing driving faster then i’ve ever had and my teacher is blasting sabaton on full volume and then he starts to tell everything he knew about tanks, war and all of that sorta stuff. Long Story short: he got fired about 2 weeks later because other students filed several complaints against him. The Gettysburg song is about the fighting 69th. An all Irish battalion that fought for the union army against the confederates. Most of them were young immigrants who hadn't been long in America. They really didn't have a reason to fight however they joined anyways to preserve the new country they found themselves in. Its not really my type of music either. However, It's a pro union song but you projected your own thoughts and biases and assumed it was pro confederate. Really bad take dude.

Gotta say, I agree with you on bunch of things, gave me a lot of laugh especially since I grew up listening to power metal, but: - Sabaton - absolutely there with you - it's just a band that's made to monetise over a nerd niche that likes tanks and history and shit - Those dwarves - also super cringe :D - Kamelot - well - you got that one pretty wrong imho. Khan (singer from Norway) is one of the best (and that era you've shown) singers in metal ever. Has a very unique and theatrical style. Does a band look a bit cringe? Sure, it does. Is it cheesy? Not really compared to everything out there ... - Iced Earth - I don't like what John did etc at all, and I don't like their songs about revolution, American south history and all the shit, they were much better when they were writting about vampires, greek mythology, and actually music from their first couple of album is outstanding. They have a huge fanbase here in Europe (especially Greece and Germany). But yeah, once John started going full-right-wing nut, his music started to suffer a lot, and became a cringe. - Amaranthe - super confused that you like this shit honestly :D Because it's like 90s euro trash music combined with techno and metal. It's aweful. Again - another band like Sabaton made for monetisation and just spitting out whatever targets the widest audience. Imho you could have listened to Rhapsody of Fire for example, which are the staple of power metal. Extremely good musicians from Italy, sure, texts are D&D LARP, but worth it, Christopher Lee (actor) used to guest on their albums doing narations etc. Blind Guardian - again - staple of power metal from Germany. Again LARP. Helloween, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica etc etc ... There are many good bands, and imho only their texts are usually cringe. But then again, I cringe at metal core, crab core, death core, whatever core bands as well, no real value there texts wise :D

Good to see you not completely dunk on Kamelot, hahaha 😂 As I said in the last video, for how admittedly terrible their band name AND album artwork are, the music is actually great, they are amazing songwriters and DO NOT sing about wizards or tanks 😂😂😂 And their singer Roy Khan is the only one to get away with "sun grabs", because, as cringey as those are, he definitely has the charisma and vocal timbre to back them up

Honestly, I can never tell whether Finn is one of those jaded former punks who constantly gatekeeps and punches down, or if he's actually laughing along and just sucks at being clearly joking/sarcastic. There's so many parts of these two videos where I'm laughing along, but then he's going too far with it and I'm no longer able to tell if he's in on the joke or just being a dick. These two videos do demonstrate why I hate the internet's concept of cringe though. 90% of the time the cringe thing is just people having fun and not giving a shit about the opinions of the people calling them cringe. Which all of these videos are definitely examples of. And suddenly the irony of a former punk calling things cringe just hit me. Weird. Edit: Also, it also just hit me that the previous video I watch that got me here was just Finn talking about how metal and rock are dying out because rock isn't fun anymore... Double Edit: The fact that he likes Amaranthine does make me think he's in on the joke at least lol

@@jakehadlock The trick with sarcasm is not always being sarcastic. Otherwise how will anyone who's not familiar know you're being sarcastic? Imagine someone who's always sarcastic; they'd probably just sound like an asshole if you didn't know better. That's why most comedians break character and let you know they're laughing with you. Makes everyone feel like they're in on the joke, and not the joke itself. Like I said, I kept thinking he was joking, and then he'd push it far enough where I'd have to take a pause. I'd be like "ha, that's true... wait are you being serious?" IDK, his other reply to me said his goal was to make someone like me wonder if he was being sarcastic or a dick, so I guess he nailed it. I'm glad it was sarcastic. I meet to many people Finn and I's age that are pretty much exactly the character he was playing. I also just wrote a post on youtube long enough that I'm questioning how much cold meds I've taken today. Fuck covid.

A state right cannot override a federal law. Then states rights doesn't get tied to racism.

Just so I don't come across as some whiny mega woke millennial, that I am not, let's keep it in context. Looking at the hardcore scene objectively for example, people like Roger Miret from AF and later Freddie from Madbalall, with there fucking bandanas repping street cred is kinda laughable out of context. Or the weird Ten Yard Fight, Wide Awake style connecticut hardcore thing with the football letterman jackets and the champion brand hoodies doing windmills in the pit, picking fights with kids for smoking cigarettes (firestorm) was all part of the "scene" when I came up and Finn participated in this to some extent. It's so cringe now to look at it retrospectivly. Sure we move on when we're in our forties, thank God, but we defended being mocked for our choices despite the fact that we knew it was far from the mainstream. I'm just saying, having a laugh at others expense is ok when we can laugh at ourselves but I would prefer a video highlighting this power metal culture that I genuinely do not understand with out endlessly taking the piss out of the people who are into it.
