One of the things i've noticed about actual metal fans is that they can appreciate music as a whole. Sure, their preference is metal but they appreciate any kind of well written and performed music. Be it classic, 60's, 70's basically any music as long as it is well done.

Yeah its like you say, you have to be able to separate the artist and the music. Just because one member of a band has said or done something bad (like being explicitly racist), does not mean that you should boycott the whole band in general. Let's be real, that is very unfair to the rest of the band that didn't say anything racist etc. You should't judge and punish a whole group of people, because one person did something wrong.

"keep metal out of politics" is kinda like arguing to keep politics out of politics. The genre is extremely broad, but it's also a soundboard for anything "extreme," which leaves room for people with views from every side of any discussion. On average, the metalhead community is more tolerant and accepting than most subcultures, it's a product of diversity within the genre, but even being tolerant of other people in and of itself is a socio-ethical and political decision. Almost every metal band is grounded in political allegory and it's been that way since Black Sabbath. The decision to be unpolitical is a political decision, evident in more absurdist lyrical bands. However, I think it's important to take a lot of stuff on just a song by song basis; if you don't want to support a certain artist because you think the band members are shoddy people, that's anybody's right.

Music always has been and always will be political. You should actually listen to the lyrics, sometime. Megadeth's "Countdown to Extinction" is one of the most political albums by any band. Maiden and Testament are pretty political, too.
@grimmsby30112 жыл бұрын
It's more about not adding very specific modern political topics to the music scene. Megadeth's lyrics primarily have an anti-war message, something everyone can agree with and still retains relevancy to this day. The same with Iron Maiden. Labeling bands as racist, even when the band doesn't use a racist aesthetic or has racist lyrics, is when it enters into the realm of toxic politics that has no other objective than to tear down bands just because one member said something while drunk a year ago. Lyrics can obviously have political themes, but the fans bringing in their own politics and bashing others over the head with it is what ruins the scene for everyone.

@leefisher38544 ай бұрын
Well the man behind Burzum is Christian Vikernes, aka Varg Vikernes. The character he portrays when he does Burzum is Count Grishnakh and it is just a character. Nationalism is not interchangeable with Nazism, to be proud of your heritage is not to be racist. Racism will absolutely persist in black metal, because it is adversarial music, it's supposed to evoke feelings of hatred, you're not supposed to support the ideology, you're not necessarily meant to agree with the message, because the message does not come from a real person, it comes from a created character. Do people think that George Lucas is evil? I mean he created Darth Sidious, is Tolkien evil? He created Morgoth and Sauron... Black metal is a lot more complicated than people realise, all those "Satanists" that created the genre, were happy to talk about celebrating Christian holidays, why? Because they never were Satanists in the first place... Same applies to the NSBM scene and any artist that is in that scene that tells you otherwise, is merely trying to pull the wool over your eyes and maintain suspension of disbelief... 🤷🏼♂️

Zero tolerance of racism in metal is not 'being political' or mixing music and politics, it's just not being a a terrible human being. If you're the kind of metal fans who are happy for fans of other races to be racially abused at shows and be made to feel unwelcome in the community by others amd you don't care to speak out or doing anything to defend them then, I've got news for you, you're a racist by default. Just because racist actions and words aren't directed at you, they still need to be dealt with. May be you don't see anything wrong with just wanting to gloss over the topic but the attitude you both display is the very thing that keeps racism going in this genre. The way you dismiss anyone even addressing racism in metal as overly 'political' demonstrates that you think that your enjoyment of the music outweighs a non-white person's right to feel safe and respected at a metal show. That is in itself, a racist attitude! Black fans of metal and those of other races would love to only have to think about fun when listening to metal but the fact is that they can't because too many black metal bands still have racist lyrics, encourage or tolerate violent and abusive white supremacists to attend their shows, display hate symbols, dish out verbal abuse and even physically assault non-white fans. You're in the privileged position of having the choice not to think about it when you attend a show. Non white fans of metal don't have the same luxury. Pretending the racism doesn't exist doesn't make it go away, what you're doing is just dismissing the experience of the people who have to deal with racism and protecting a bunch of violent assholes who give black metal a deservedly bad reputation as a refuge for white supremacists.
