I work in a pharmacy. We keep the the ice bags we get with shipments in a freezer. When the power goes out we move all the meds to the center of the fridge and box them in with freezer pack. This will hold the fridge over for 3 to 4 hours

Now that you got your new generator, make sure you run it every few months or so for about 20-30 minutes. Just like your car, a generator must be run to keep it in best working order. I have neighbors who bought a new generator and let it sit in their garage for a year or so without starting it. Unfortunately, when they needed it for a power outage, they were never able to get it started because the fuel eroded within the carburetor. Love your kitten stories!

Good reason to use propane instead. You could take a tank full of propane, stick it in a corner of a shed or garage for 10 years and (as long as the tank is protecting from rusting or damage) hook it up and its still good as new. Gasoline on the other hand will turn to sludge or varnish after a year or so)

Some new generators automatically turn on for 30 minutes every 30 days. At least, that's what my grandparents generator does. That way they don't have to worry about remembering to turn it on.

My brother's family lives near LA and they had solar panels and solar energy generator put in about 10 years ago. I think CA gives some benefits to households which have their own solar energy system to reduce the load on city electric supply.

Hi there. I keep reptiles and a power outage is a nightmare scenario. There are heat packs (look like hand warmers but are absolutely NOT handwarmers [dangerously high levels of heat]) that we keep for emergencies and that last for 40+ hours. They are called Uniheat and make for a great addition to any emergency kit for animals sensitive to temperature.

When my ex roommates chicks got cold stressed I wrapped the lower end in paper towels like a diaper so I didn't get covered in bird poop and stuck them in my bra. I saved all three chicks and the pizza delivery guy definitely went back to his store with an interesting tale. I kind of forgot the three Chicks were along for the ride when I opened the front door and three cute little heads were popping out over my shirt. When my Thalia Grace was a tiny kitten I would stick her in my bra and carry her around as well but she did not need a paper towel diaper

FYI. To keep meds cool with NO electricity, look into FRIO Cooling Wallets. They have a waterproof outer ‘wallet’, and an inner pocket that you soak in water for about 10 minutes. They have absorbent granules that keep medications cool. Maintenance is simply re-wetting every few days. They were designed for travelers who need to keep insulin cool. They really work!

Generac. Most people don't know that you cannot just plug a generator to your home without a converter. The converter must be installed by an electrician. Generac does that for you. Don't know if Generac is in CA, but there must be comperable systems available.

Living in a 300+ year old city, our power grid is not the most stable. So I keep one time use heat packs in stock for my kittens and we have an uninterrupted power source that we can squeeze a feeding or two's worth of kettle time out of. But in a real, days long power outage, we'd be properly hooped.

I live in an area that was without power for more than a week after Sandy. The local ambulance and fire houses had emergency generators and let the community come in and charge our phones and devices. If someone showed up with a box of kittens, a heating pad and some bottles, I very much doubt they would have been turned away.

Reminds of me and my roommates trying to figure out how to set up a charcoal grill. We'd put the briquettes in the wrong place (too low in the grill) and then didn't understand why our food wasn't getting hot. It ended with us moving burning briquettes standing on a wooden porch, while I stood by holding a fire extinguisher. 😅 Best food I've ever eaten though. My roommate is Cuban, I don't know what she used as marinate, but it was amazing.

As a kid this happened more than a few times in my single parent home. Doing homework by candlelight in the trailer park lol. The most startling thing about the power going out is how quiet it becomes... you don't realize how much all the devices hum and whir around you until *Silence* I remember running an extension cord from my neighbor to our fish tank and fridge for a couple days one time. I live in south Louisiana where outages are frequent (especially during "H" season. I never say the "H" word out loud or type it. It could put the gris gris on us. 😂) So we rely on power supplies that can be charged and ready for an outage but also recharged by solar panels. That would be a great alternative for you in sunny Cali. Check out Jackery. There are numerous power packs made that are similar to them that come in all sizes and prices along with all the power cords converters you need to run your 110v and 12v needs.

After years of experience with power outages that can last for days and coping with gas powered generators.... what works for us is to turn on the generator for a few hours at a time, cool down your fridge, run your water etc, and then turn off the generator for a few hours.

I wish it was so easy in CA. Wood burning fireplaces are pretty much banned, but at least she has a gas stove. Cellars, basements, underground, doesn’t happen much in CA either. They didn’t have an issue with water, but wells require a pump and electricity to work, and they can cost thousands to put one in. Wells are usually only found on farm land out here.

In Africa I know it is depth wich were unthinkable decades earlier due to droughts, like hundreds of meters and that requires powered pomps indeed . However in more northern ereas, powered pomps are more of a moderm convenience for lazy people we have all become, and wells are deep but the water is not unreachable by a good old bucket. And cellars ARE a requirement for anything, storage of wine, food, protection against storms, bombings, etc. Old good houses were never built without a cellar, same for buildings. We will have to rethink how we live obviously...

@@alkante2962 Even across America, things that are common in one area are not common someplace else. California is very unique in that we have several different regions. There's mountains, deserts, valleys, beaches. The northern part is cold and rainy, the south end is much warmer and breezy. It snows across the Sierra mountains. So even houses are built differently across the state. Sometimes we take advantage of modern conveniences without making a back up plan. I think I would be just fine without power for a few days, while some don't know what to do if it goes out for a few hours.

@@alkante2962 I moved from the East Coast of the US, Florida to CA. I dealt with hurricanes in the summers. During the winter, the central portion of the state would get some deep freezes overnight which was really bad for the oranges. They mature in the winter and hard freezes could cause the oranges to burst open on the tree, losing the whole crop. The last few years I lived there, Central Florida got hit by three hurricanes in one season. The following season, South Florida got hit by 3 hurricanes. In the past 15 years, there have been so many named storms that they've gone into the greek alphabet. Most years before, getting past 10 names was a big deal.

When without power for 4 days straight.. middle of winter .. I rigged a little system using a candle to heat cans of soup, water for coffee.. etc.. even candles can be used to warm things.. used carefully of course !

Electric ones are better for the environment though, because they can be powered by green energy. Also there have been studies showing that about half of all stoves raise concentrations of carbon monoxide in the kitchen beyond the 9 parts per million the EPA has established as the top safe level. This can be particularly harmful if you have children, for whom a lower dose of carbon monoxide is needed to cause real damage, especially to brain development

Yeah, those safety gas cans are annoying. Think the intention is you are supposed to stick the spout into what you are filling, and use the lip on the opening of that receptacle to actuate the safety valve.

Seriously I hope someone with knowledge of all the alternative sources of electricity will repay you with the information you need for this reality. With what you have shared with all you deserve a full education. There is much to know and the technology is evolving. UPS, deep cycle batteries, inverters, propane generators, solar generators and on and on. The model in this video does not appear to be an inverter generator, i am not positive, but that kind is harder on fridges. You have to run it dry, gas goes bad in even a month sometimes, Stabil helps. A donation of a dual fuel, electric start, inverter generator sized right could be divine. Propane stores for a very long time. Solar is nice to have, but $$$. I use a mix of battery backup and solar and a small 2K gen that runs on propane for a small house. Bless you, the beauty and kindness in these videos mends hearts.

Other options: A) For the little fridge... In a pinch, if you don't have a generator... go to the 7-11 or other similar store.. get bags of ice.. they can help keep refrigerated items cool enough until power is restored.... it's old school but it works ! B) an old fashioned, rubber hot water bottle (if you have a way to heat water) can be used to keep babies warm..

Your advice of "If you have animals" you MUST have a backup is spot on!!!! I take care of fish, and the lengths we go through...spare filters, pumps, UV lamps, a generator the size of a pickup...one can't be too careful.

glad you got a backup power source worked out, you should get a few hot water bottles to stick away for future emergencies. back in the day that's how we heated baby bottles, i remember keeping newborn kittens/puppies up against our skin to keep them warm. i guess as things advance people don't get taught the low tech version of care. stay well n keep those babies growing

It's got to be scary for you guys though, bless those babies hearts and yours for caring for them. We finally got a fountain for our cats, they live it and so does our dog when she comes inside to sleep at night. I've got baby-itis, I want another kitten or 5. Little trick for keeping stuff cool without electricity: fill the washing machine with ice if you have one. Better than a sink or a bathtub because it has a lid. That way the cool air stays inside better but your tub and sinks stay free. Plus it already is designed to drain water so it just drains whatever melts. Great way of storing food during a hurricane

My house got to below 30 this winter. Gotta love Texas not having power in negative weather for a week! My cat was the only thing I worried about. We snuggled under many blankets for the entire week. Now he insists on being held against my chest at bed time.... Adorable but a pain =) Anything for the fur babies!

We bought a small freezer that could be run from a car when I was nursing. We never ended up using it, but I am glad we have it. We use to lose power a lot and since we were on well water, we use to lose water too.

With a rating of 6875 starting watts and 5500 running watts, your generator has enough capacity to power lots of devices at once. If your outages are frequent you'll get your best use from your generator by having a transfer switch installed on your electrical panel. Depending on the kind you get and how it's installed, you may be able to power all the circuits in your home, up to the capacity of the generator. Our transfer switch lets us power our ten most-needed circuits, which gives us lights throughout the house, power to outlets in multiple rooms, and the ability to run 2 fridges, a freezer, and our heating boiler. Make sure a licensed electrician does the work. Best wishes to you both!

You're fortunate to have a hob that runs on natural gas. For those who have all electrical ovens and stoves, I suggest they buy a camping stove with gas canisters. We had to get one this year when our electricity was shut off so the wiring in our house was re-done ( the joys of living in a house over 50 years old). We were lucky it only needed a day's work, but even so, without that camping stove, even a small thing like a cup of tea was impossible to make. Candles, cigarette lighters and safety matches were also a godsend.

Generators are great. There are also, other devices (I forget the brand name, but you can charge them up and they can power a thousand watts for hours.) If you keep,them charged up and the power goes out, you can plug your fridge into,them and keep food/meds cold. Campers/van lifers use them.

I have pet exotic birds and live in a state where in the winter if the power goes out it could be deadly for them. We are so fortunate to have a gas top stove but back in the blizzards of 2010 we went out of our way to buy 6 plastic Hot Water Bottles. The old classic red ones you see in cartoon shows. They were extremely hard to find in our local stores!! But putting near boiling water into them and wrapping them up in towels can give our birds something warm to nest on at the bottoms of their cages incase we ever need it. We got two for each bird, that way we could roate them and have one ready before the other one got too cold.

I left a post on your Instagram about power. I live on a ranch east of Madera and we get the occasional power outage, especially in fire season. Recommend getting a Firman H0752 so you can run on propane vs gas. You can run almost all day on a 35lb tank. Solar, any of the panels from Renogy. I use the 100w panel for my cooler. A good fridge/ freezer you can run on Solar or Generator is the ICECO 12.8QT T12 fridge.

It might be a good idea to get a few of those temp guns so when the electricity is out you will know the warmer placenin the house for the kittens. Plus maybe some of those car charges with batteries to charge small stuff or your phone. ;)

Generators come with so many rules for placement! I hope y'all are able to find a good place to put yours so that it's safe and completely usable whenever you need it. You'll also have to be sure to keep your gas cannister(s) full because you may not yet know how much gas is required to run the generator for several hours. Having it for the medicine refrigerator and the incubator is so very important. Many other things are conveniences that we can cope without for a little bit. Fergie's continually checking on his water fountain was very much the way I feel when the electricity is off--I want my comforts back!

I'm fostering bottle babies and when we had power outages, and I had to be creative. Thankfully it doesn't happen on a regular basis but when it happens it catches you of guard. Especially when you don't know how long it will last. For heating water up, I used the backyard grill; I used hot water bottles for keeping the babies warm. 2 years ago, we invested in a Generac. We had power outages since, and it only takes 20 sec, and we have power again. For us it was worth the cost. This video is great, because we don't think about it until it happens. Generators are so much easier than they used to be. I grew up off-grid deep woods. We had an ancient generator that had to be at least 50 years old. You had to crank it with a hand crank and flip multiple starter switches at the same time to get it going. We were kids and both my brothers would have to crank as fast as they could and I'd be flipping switches and spraying starter fluid until we could get it going. So glad you got things working!

That's how we used to warm my brother's bottles when he was a baby. Fun times. By the time my sister came along, we occasionally had a microwave. But I didn't trust it in a microwave. But I started putting the bottle right in the pan on the stove for half the time. I don't recommend this method. Too easy to overheat. Oh, the memories!

i generally just have one litter at a time, so not so much medicine. Our longest blackout was a little over a day. I heated an iron skillet in the gas oven (ours does not have the electric coil; stovetop would work), wrapped it in towels, put a flannel pillow case on it, and it was a heated kitten bed. Boiled water for bottle heating. If you have an electric water heater, stove-heated water can suffice for butt-cleaning. we may invest in batteries for our solar electricity, but i am glad we have gas for some of our devices. With a single litter, one's own body heat is another option.

uh no. Next time the power goes out at night, bye bye solar panels. Yes, I have solar panels. They don't work at night. I have them to save a bit on my electricity bills, I know they're no reliable backup power supply (though probably better in SoCal than here in northern Europe where it's dark or at least overcast most of the year).

The “safety” on the gas can is actually depressed by putting the spout into the gas tank, then press the safety against the rim of the gas tank, to start the flow of gas. (The tip is already in the tank, so no spillage.)

I know I'm stating the obvious, but I had a generator installed when we moved in. I've lost count how many outages we've had. The whole house generator runs on natural gas not Propane, but a Propane version is available. It doesn't take more than 10-15 seconds for our generator to kick in. The last circuit to be energized is 220v, but heat & A/C is prioritized. I'm sure a local reputable contractor can help you.

There was a planned power outage in my neighborhood months ago. The cats were drinking from their water fountain when the power went out. I was out when it happened but my dad told me the cats looked so confused. We have a water bowl for this situation so it worked out. Oh and I live in SoCal as well.

Born and raised in Southeast Texas. In our rural schools, kids are taught how to run a generator before they learn how to balance a checkbook! Lol! When a hurricane hits, the rural areas get power last so we learn early how to be self sufficient.

Awwww yeah we recently lost power for over two weeks because of a massive storm I live in Australia and so many houses were destroyed in the storm. Even know it’s maybe been around 3-4 weeks and we still only have power off of a huge generator

okay if you know there's going to be trouble I filled a bunch of zip locks with water and stuck them in the freezer right before Hurricane Sandy hit us here in NJ. The ice was great we lasted a week with all of the frozen things but the blackout lasted longer than a week. The frozen bags will help you keep the fridge running if you throw a couple of frozen water bags in there and keep the door shut. I was so happy to have a gas stove though that really helped us get through the 2 weeks of no power.

Here in Australia, we notify our electricity carrier of any health issues requiring electrically run gizmos. That will then expedite our address to get the electricity back on. Can this happen in your neck of the woods too?

A computer server UPS battery system would be ideal for you medical fridge...plug the UPS into the wall and the fridge into the UPS. No fumes etc and no fuel bills. They dont last forever but when you need them they are invaluable. Love the vids.
