I could be wrong about this but Japan slowly did the same thing with Kamen Rider. The transform items are either using the toy or something that is close to the toy version as much as they can.
@MMPRtoys Жыл бұрын
I was wondering about Kamen Rider. I'm not as familiar, but it just makes sense on every level to do it that way. They're trying to sell toys. What better way than to have the show props be the same toys you can buy? It's mind-blowing. Every kid and collector wants their toys to be like what they see on TV, and this is literally it. And also, for small props that need to be painted, might have to transform or have electronics.... having them mass produced like that also makes things easier. I was just looking at some Sentai footage of different seasons, judging by the screw holes and on/off switches, I'm going to say a lot of Sentai seasons use the toys too.
@silverfoil8854 Жыл бұрын
They mostly use toys before transforming.

Rangers isn't the only property to do this. Star Trek Enterprise had their prop department run to a Toys R US to buy up Art Asylum's phaser from their Enterprise line to use on the show when they needed more prop guns on the quick. The only difference with the toy was the orange barrel tip that they just painted over. And Deep Space Nine made Ferengi phasers from the legs of Robotech mecha they bought at TRU on clearance 😂
@MMPRtoys Жыл бұрын
I don't think a lot of viewers realize what they're seeing on TV and movies. I know some ranger fans seem to almost feel cheated when they learn a prop wasn't super fancy and expensive, but so much of what's on TV and in movies is cheap/lightweight, and for a variety of reasons, including actor safety.
@Gangstor Жыл бұрын
@@MMPRtoys oh, one we both missed: the chess pieces on Astronema's chessboard. They were just 'In Space' action figures. With the exception of herself. She was actually a figure of Jessie Priest from the Spawn movie line of toys with the hair painted purple. What's interesting is that figure was also used to represent someone else in an episode of Earth: Final Conflict, in an episode about a female athlete/sports star--midway through the episode she's talking to someone about licensing her likeness for a toy and she's shown the Jessie Priest figure, AGAIN repainted, this time to look like the actress on that show. They even reused the packaging! 😂 But I always found it interesting that a fan could theoretically recreate her entire chess set if they wanted to and it wouldn't be that difficult. I think that's a huge upside to prop departments using found items.

@@Gangstor Honestly with Power Rangers it's safer to assume I was aware. Keep in mind I have a good eye for these things but was also on the set. I've talked about that in the past, they used Batman figures for the Psycho Rangers. And there's still more. This video wasn't meant to point out every last thing, just a handful. My friend Edgar and I had made a featurette for the Shout! Factory DVDs about the props that ended up not being used. Maybe I can work some of that footage into a future video.

Yeah, the season 2 & 3 stuff was very noticeable and painfully obvious there. Granted, I was 17 during MMPR season 2, and 18 during season 3, so noticing the details was kinda my thing big time. Oh!! Mystic Force!! They had a REALLY funky prop for the Mystic Morpher: it had the SIZE of the Magiphone from Magiranger (cuz the Japanese toy was a big boi compared to the American toy), but it looked like it had the raised rubber buttons of the Mystic Morpher!! (And when the morph sequence started, it inexplicably switched back to the Magiphone) Also, Samurai: Antonio was definitely using the American exclusive Samurai Morpher repaint of the craptastic American Samuraizer. (Everyone else had a Shoudouphone, and Lauren even folded hers into brush mode like in Shinkenger, explained away as hers being "an older model"!)

In Power Rangers Samurai & Super Samurai, they use the Shodo Phone toy as the main morpher. They just didn't utilize the paintbrush mode & changed the screen decal. For Antonio's morpher, I think that was an actual prop, separate from the toy because they look different in shots. Also, a fun fact Antonio used the wrong morpher in the Dimensions in Danger special. In behind the scenes shots, he's seen using the Shodo Phone that the core 5 Samurai Rangers use.

MMPR using Legacy just makes sense, but I was pretty shocked to see the Legacy morpher first show up in Japan! I was like, no way! Japan's using our toys! Who would have thought we'd see that day? And that's it's additionally funny that Hasbro, the current owner of Power Rangers with their own power morpher, used the previous toy company's morpher as the prop in the upcoming special. You'd think they'd use that to promote their power morpher, which technically is closer to the original toy, which had silver plastic, not die-cast metal. But yeah, Bandai made a pretty incredible morpher. It looks like a prop.

They use the toys for almost every morpher from MMPR to Dino Fury. In the original season you were seeing the toys. They had the Japanese version, and the American version. They also had resin copies of the morphers and coins. If you notice a coin looking less shiny, that's the resin copy. I know Mark Richardson has some stories about being out on location and needing morphers and having to go to Toys R Us to grab 'em. I'm always just thinking how lucky he was to have found what he was looking for.

It is fairly common knowledge that they would use toys and I thought it was to safe the actual prop version from damage like when they would have to toss a mmpr morpher around or like when goldar had Jason’s morpher in the dark dimension in the green with evil mini series and it looked like Jason was given a legacy morpher coin when he got his powers back in beast morphers cause the coin was darker then the original gold coins used for mmpr
@MMPRtoys Жыл бұрын
Sometimes if they were throwing things around, that would be a soft foam version. Another advantage to using toys though is if something did break, it would be a lot easier to get a new toy than make a new prop. I don't know what's common knowledge anymore. I know what I know. Just the comments I read today on Facebook alone has me wondering what is and isn't common knowledge. People are still learning Power Rangers comes from Japan, and some think Japan copies us and Super Sentai is "a rip off." Which is what Akibaranger was making fun of years ago.

They also used the toy Zyudenchi for dino chargers. Specifically it's the Zyudenchi set DX versions. You can tell it's the toy Zyudenchi in dino charge because of the pegs on them. In the kyoryuger footage the prop zyudenchi had 6 pegs on them on both the + and - ends. But the toy versions have different numbers of pegs in both + and - ends because of the different sound gimmick in the Kyoryuger toy line. Also the toy Gaburivolver was used in the first dino charge Morpher toy commercial. If I'm correct.
@MMPRtoys Жыл бұрын
1:21 Got Dino Charge. I'm not sure about the toy commercial, there are a few and the ones I'm aware of it looks like the American toy (at least the one the kid is holding). There have been instances where the American toy wasn't ready yet so a Japanese toy was photographed, or things like the Ninja Steel Megazord not having Zord names on the box b/c they hadn't been named at the time the boxes were being printed. I'm assuming it would have been something like that, but, I did look at a few commercials just now, that does look like the US gun, which is smaller, missing some paint, and orange tips, so not to mistake a yellow dinosaur head for a real gun in the US. ;)

I've got the Battleizer at 0:14, top row above Ninja Storm blue's morpher. This video is under 7 minutes, that's not enough time to go over every last thing. There are many more in Power Rangers before we get into Super Sentai. In MMPR, Billy uses a toy Falconzord as a remote control for the Falconzord, it's not the DX version, it's the smaller non-transforming one. The MMPR Blade Blasters were sometimes toys, and they were also used to create new props in the Wild West episodes. All of the mophers were toys in In Space. Zhane's Digi Morpher as well, that was the Japanese version which had lights vs our "MEGA" just printed on. That was the toy Turbo Navigator you saw, painted silver. Hasbro needs to up their toy quality and use them in the show. I initially thought they did with Beast Morphers but upon closer inspection, I'm mostly positive it's the Go-Busters Changer. Even the Morphers in the Netflix special are the Bandai Legacy versions. But I honestly don't blame Hasbro for using them as I don't know how as a toy company, they could one-up or improve the legacy morphers. Still, I love seeing the toys being used in the show! Sometimes even the old PR Toy adverts, when showing the zords combine looked almost as good as they did in the show.
