Power Scrapping Mini Series (Video 3/Designing Pages)

This is video three in my mini series, Power Scrapping. In this series, I share a fast and fun, streamlined approach to using collections.

I love your tutorials. I have a question about choosing the photos. I've always chosen photos based on what memories I want to document rather than what goes with the paper. Wouldn't I miss photos that I love and want to keep, if they don't work well with the paper I've chosen?

Totally! In the big picture, I only scrapbook photos to document the stories I want to tell. I need a story! That being "said", I have many jumping off points for inspiration. It can be photos, material, design, technique... I like having different jumping off points. When it comes to material as my jumping off point, like in this series, I selected the collection to fit my stories. I knew I had a tropical vacation to document. (There is a video in my Tip & Tricks playlist in which I talk about efficient shopping. ) Thanks for watching. I hope this explains my approach.

Oh Dorothy, I love the way you added photos to your paper packs to create page kits. I have got to try putting my papers behind my laptop and scrolling through photos. I’m usually using photos that have already been printed and then looking for papers. I have those Simple Stories grids, but never remember to use them; hopefully, that will change now. Making your own sketches or designs was most interesting. I’m going to think about that next time I make a layout…that may be why I walk away mid-way through a page; not being able to figure out what direction I’m going. So frustrating! Your photos are always so vibrant and interesting. My photos seem to be mostly scenery and food/ambiance, unless I’m with family, then it’s all about the people. I do print photos (for the last few years once I got the PM400) using the Project Life app where I can print 2, 3x4’s on a 4x6 sheet. Looking forward to more of this Series. Thank you for taking the time to walk us through your process.

Thanks Debby. I do my planning quickly, using gut feelings. I'm able to move quickly to the next project because of my mindset. I constantly remind myself I can always change my mind later. This helps!

Loved this process. I’m worried about the time investment for me. How long would you say it took to select your kit, select photos, create a sketch and pack up 5 page kits? Regardless, I plan to give this process a try and see how it sheds time at the end while actually creating my 5 layouts. I have an upcoming crop and find my “day 1” at a crop is always a struggle to get anything meaningful completed. But this process might do the trick. I like reigning myself in to one collection, too. I feel like this is a time saver and makes the layouts cohesive. I’d like to try power scrapping one event…. Like you did with the trip to Jamaica. I have tons of photos from our Ireland trip. Hmmm…can you see my wheels turning? Thanks for the inspiration. I’ve certainly seen process videos like this before, but all the “baby steps” combined and shared like you have here, really clicked for me. Bless you Dorothy!

Thank you. and Happy St-Patrick's Day. (I'm wearing a sweatshirt now that I bought in Dublin!) Power scrapping for one event/trip is an excellent idea. It makes photo selection so much quicker. Now on to your question. I cannot give you a precise time count but I can say, the process went quickly. Before explaining, it's important to mention mindset. When I make decisions, I know that I can always change my mind later in the process. This allows me to make quick, gut feeling decisions and prevents me from spending too much time on each decision. It's also worth mentioning I'm using one collection. Everything coordinates and that saves time. Next: Breaking down and separating the steps keeps me moving quickly. When I'm creating paper packs, that's all I'm doing. I'm not thinking about the end result, how many photos to include, where to place my embellishments, etc. The longest step for me was selecting photos, but it wasn't a ridiculous amount of time. It helped that I was using a tropical collection and I had tropical photos. Page design was quick as the photos and paper were already selected. The number of photos dictated design and more importantly...my mindset. I knew I could always change my mind. Currently I'm working on page kit # 4 (pages 7&8). So far I'm using the page kits I created. I've made a few design changes, most notably, changing the order of the pages. For example, when I put a grid on the right in the sketch, I may place it on the left. I always give myself the freedom to change my mind. That keeps my creativity flowing (and keeps it fun!). Loving this series! I had noticed that many times you use a white border for your photos. Not sure if those were part of the photo print, or cardstock. My question is ... how do you decide when to print border with photo, and when to use cardstock instead? Also, how do you decide to mat, and when to use just the photo(s) without any border/mat? This is the one area I struggle with, but it seems for many scrappers (whether pocket page or layout style) they tend to stick to one or the other.

I'm definitely a photo matter, If that's a word. I never add white mats when I print. I like the look but often I trim my photos. I use more white cardstock (no fun) but I have more flexibility (fun!)

This series is very informative. Have you ever thought about using Lauren Hinds Photo Folders? You can make all your notes on the folders and even draw your design if you don't need it too large.

Love your power scrapping mini series. I use the same method when prepping for a crop. I take less things with me and I have a plan to focus on once I get there. Only I use pre-made sketches. I hope to see you do this series again in the future.

Sometimes I make quick mini albums for friends and family. (Tag books, interactive cards, fun papercrafting stuff.) Otherwise, I store my extra favourite photos in photo boxes by date , and throw away the complimentary photos. (I'll keep photos with people and toss the rest.) Sometimes I print the same shot in more than one size because I don't know the page design I'll be using. I do my best to do this for favourite photos only, that way I can store them in my favourites box. I love Jamaica!

Dorothy, I am so excited by this series. Somehow it is making things click in my brain on a different level than before. Your matting photos in black with bright vibrant colors is what initially drew me to your style. I can totally see that on page kit #5 with the Jamaica merchants. The timing of this series is perfect as I had been trying to determine what collection I wanted to put together for a vacation trip. I got pretty excited about a line about tropical islands from Scrapbook Customs that I think may coordinate beautifully with Sunburst Artistry. Pulling the photos up on the laptop with the papers set up behind is an eye opener! I am headed to my LSS right now! Thank you for all your work & inspiration.

Two questions: how do you sort cardstock to put it away in the right color area when you are done? My colors seem close enough that I have a mess when I return. And how do you decide to not put the flamingo floatie (I think I saw a picture with one) on the paper with the flamingo in the corner. Your process is awesome! I’m learning lots!

@@cathysito7414 Here's the answer....I'm a collection scrapbooker so if I'm finished playing with a collection and there is still enough material left to create a few pages, I tidy up the leftovers and store it as a collection, cardstock and all. (I remove basics like black and white and put that with my neutrals) If I'm finished with a collection and there isn't much left, I store the leftover cardstock a few different ways. If it is specific to a manufacturer like 49 And Market, Hip Kit Club, Simple Stories, etc. , I store it by manufacturer or slip it in with another collection by the same manufacturer. If it does not fall into this category, I have small box of general, multicoloured cardstock. (That should give you an idea of my scrap space...lol! I'm all over the place but I know where to find stuff!)

Cathy...I forgot to mention the flamingo floatie...you are right. I had a photo of one and I didn't put it with the flamingo paper. I thought about it, but I wanted to save the pink paper for some garden photos,. The flamingo was with my beauty photos. Decisions, decisions...lol!
