Very good video. One piste type where that does not work is ice. One's skis will kick out (badly) when doing that skid.

Excellent video and summation of the goal in skiing which is to be able to effectively change direction to which I would add "in a controlled manner". Guy doesn't mention an important point; the turning or Power Steering (good term) effort originates in the pelvis. Another important point is that extension of the ankles and knees is required to create the angles in the knee and ankle necessary to engage the muscles in the pelvis responsible for Power Steering and transfer the effort to the feet and from there through the boots to the skis. The joint angles associated with the sweet spot on the outside ski (foot) Guy refers to are programmed into our body. We experience them every time we take a step when walking. The issue in skiing is the ability to engage these programmed joint angles. But that's another whole issue.

David. You didn't learn anything here because they didn't Teach you anything useful. Read my comment. Also, everything you said about Power Steering makes no sense and doesn't teach anything. I've been doing this for 51 years and I was a thinker for 48 of those years. I kinda know. Again, read my comment.

I prefer to bring the inside foot back just a smidge. This puts energy into the turn, tightens the radius and preserves the pressure on the outside foot. I find myself pivoting with a femur twist when in the moguls and when I'm in trouble.

You allow the skis to turn at a tighter radius by moving your weight forward and onto the front, turning part of the skis, the shovel, and then press your hip into the direction of the turn or Back into the fall line. That, allows the ski to make a tighter radius turn! You don't force it. That is demonstrated here. 1:38 1:43 The Gravity line is your Momentum Line. The Momentum Line is your Ski Line. Your momentum of weight movement is going in the direction the skis are going while gravity is trying to make you fall down the hill which your turning skis help you resist. I started teaching 50 years ago this past winter and I can only guess what Drift Angle means. I Think you mean, The Radius of the Turn, at any given moment. 1:56 All you need to do to Allow your Skis to turn is to position your upper body so it faces down the hill and take your weight off the downhill ski and step on your uphill foot. As you have destroyed your balance on the turning ski, you will fall down the hill which rolls your uphill foot over which flattens the skis for a split second where the torsion between your upper and lower body will make your feet try to align with you downhill facing body and the ski will continue onto the arch of your uphill foot and the Ski, will make your feet change direction, not the other way around! Your skis twist your legs, not your legs twisting your feet! 2:05 You Don't let your "Body" fall inside the turn, you take your weight off your Left foot, lift your Left cheek and set it on the edge of the Left Barstool. By lifting your cheek, you are keeping your upper body vertical which will keep you balanced no matter which foot you stand on. "Regulate" what with the joints of the lower legs? Everything has to be spelled out for anybody your are conversing with especially students. Along with the hip into the turn, your knees can move forward or back to put more or less weight on the front of the skis. The more weight you put on the front, the easier it is for your tails to slide around even if you are carving! 2:17 That said and taught nothing! Watch how the hip goes into the turn while the shoulders go out of the turn, Balance, and the knees go forward onto the ski tips. That, is Teaching!

How about this ski ? Are good?

I did this run, but my coach pointed out that in some timepoint of the turns she saw the skis pointed to the outside and the skiier's upper body has already turned to the downhill. She called it called upper body leads the turn, which is the common errors in skiing. Is this correct?

The dominant force acting on a skier is the shear force component of gravity. Momentum results from radial acceleration from redirecting the trajectory across the fall line. As momentum decays a skier 's trajectory will become aligned with the fall or gravity line unless the skier creates a force that opposes gravity. This is what happens in the load phase of a turn sequence.
@JanosKoranyi5 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that the dominant force is gravity? During the turn you also have the rotational forces. These are not just part of gravity. So you have to balance against both the gravity by using the normal force and the centrifugal force by inclining.
@JanosKoranyi5 жыл бұрын
@@epicsdrummer2010 The term balance has a clear definition. I use this. We use forces against the G and against the centrifugal forces. (The normal force and the centripetal force). When we use the maximum of forces against these two (G and C) we have also the maximum balance, the COM is in the real balance point. At this point the COM puts pressure at the middle point of the skis in a perpendicular angel. This is the important issue here. You must find your balance point during skiing. When you start a turn you project your body into the direction of the fall-line. You put your COM into the real balance point. At this moment you can have a very low pressure on the skis and so you can change the skis, like turning them or edging them. Without finding the real balance point at the start of the turn you will be unable to make parallel turns. But all this does not change my question to yo. And also what you state is interesting but it does not help a skier. It is far too away from a real skiing situation, from practice. That is why I did not like your comment.
@JanosKoranyi5 жыл бұрын
@R B sorry, but you need to get some basic knowledge before discussing physics. Momentum is not at all a force. Check up things before you make a statement.
@JanosKoranyi5 жыл бұрын
@R B No, you are wrong. Why don´t you check up things before answering? Momentum is the mass of an object multiplied with the velocity of the mass. It has nothing to do with forces. You use a force to give an acceleration to a mass. So the mass gets a momentum.
@JanosKoranyi5 жыл бұрын
@R B I think you are stupid. Stupid people think they know everything and so they do not need to learn anything anymore. But you can not change physics by your wishes. When I get hit by a car there will be forces involved. And the amount of forces will be higher the higher the mass of the car has and the higher the speed the car had before the hit. But momentum is still not a force. At the hit the speed of the car will decrease and the energy of this rest will get into a force on my body.

No twisting of the feet (and up move) necessary . Simple flex (pull up) the inside leg more. Same result, no unnecessary strain on the knees. The "Up" move also results in more loss of contact with the snow-not less.

Is drift sideslip?
@AlltracksAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth, I like to think of drift as an intentional action and a skid as unintentional and a sideslip as a drift in a straight line, often used as a drill to promote separation between upper and lower body. Thanks, happy skiing!

Skidding turns, Hmmmm, didn't think that was something to be taught. IT'S NOT. Skidding is not something to be taught in skiing it's to be "De-emphasized" and avoided. I guess you could go back to the stem-christy and teach that as well.
@thomasmedeiros57225 жыл бұрын
2drsdan There May be times when you may let the skis drift to drop down the slope to set up the next turn or line up to get a better angle to hit a Traverse. It can be a useful tool to have if you ski off piste in variable conditions. Carving is great on groomers but sometimes off piste you have to be able to adapt to various terrain and snow conditions. I like to practice and use several drills to handle these various conditions. Catch and release, falling leaves, and skiing on the inside ski up hill edge etc.
@2drsdan5 жыл бұрын
@@thomasmedeiros5722 I use my inside uphill edge on every turn and it carves every time because CARVING is what advanced skiing is about. Skidding is for coming into the lodge for lunch.
@AlltracksAcademy5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment 2drndan, I look at it this way; skidding is unintentional and a drift is intentional (and very useful/necessary in many situations) Just look at Miller/Ligety, in almost all of their WC GS wins. Cheers! Guy
@JB917104 жыл бұрын
2drsdan Sliding around a turn is what happens on every turn, even hard carved turns as the tail will break away and slide because it is unweighted compared to the tip. You don't Teach how to slide a turn because the students will do it automatically when the make a correct turn. They are afraid to create a steep leg angle as they are learning. You focus on the virus, not the symptoms. The entire ski teaching industry focuses on what things look like, not how to make them to look like that.
