Absorption isn't done by estimating the amount and direction of force. It's done by feel, real time. If you have problems absorbing when you feel the bump pushing up on you, it's because you're not in the right position. Pulling the feet back as you crest the bump, puts you in the right position for absorbing the next bump.

This is good. Very short, concise, and to the point. The instant replay with back-and-forth is helpful to understand cause and effect. The good turn vs bad turn is also helpful. Humor rounds out the video, making the whole thing fun. Thanks!

On my first day in the Alps I accidentally hit a patch of icy moguls and couldn't slow down as I kept getting bumped out of my parallel turn. I saw a bit of smooth snow I would later discover was a mound created by a snow blower. I got in to my turn, slowed from maybe 80kph to 60kph (i had been to indoor snow domes so not completely beginner) before the smooth snow abruptly ran out leaving me flying for several seconds down and 45° incline with my skis sideways and one arm in the air, the other desperately reaching for the alarmingly distant snow with that pole. Convinced I was going to die I actually had a moment of beautiful serenity that if I was religious I would have said was a gift from Buddha Allah Jesus etc. "oh well, that was life. C'est la vie. The next thing I remember was thinking being dead sucks It's all dark and cold and excruciatingly painful. Then I thought some more and realised I wasn't dead, just knocked briefly unconscious and awakening buried in snow. With one arm hanging uselessly I managed to get up and amazingly with both skis on while a helpful fellow skier had grabbed my poles and was waving to me further down the mountain. My skid down about 100 m to get my poles then another 200 m to the cafe where I told the housemistress from my school who was looking after my group that day "miss I think I've..." "Not now James" "but miss" "after I talk to the group". Eventually I managed to explain I'd broken my arm and foolishly declined the helicopter rescue and took a sledge that went right away to the top of the mountain back up the red run and over the moguls I just broken my arm on. The journey was excruciating I was so steep that I was only barely able to hang on with one arm shock rapidly setting in. My question, what could I have done as a beginner in moguls to have induced a controlled crash stop before my speeds reached such dangerous levels? I knew I was out of control even at 20 kph.

Fun story. Sorry about the arm. I admire people who can blast down moguls safely and well. It is also an art to do them slowly and well.

Should be turning by tipping the downhill ski downhill, followed by tipping the uphill ski downhill, not by rotating the uphill ski as shown in this video, which is effectively a wedge christie turn. I practice javelins, but certainly not to refine rotational skills. The idea with modern skiing is to eliminate rotation, which causes skidding. Refined tipping technique results in carved turns, which by definition involves no skidding. If you're on a slope, especially a steep icy one, you want to carve, not skid out of control. Thank you and have a nice day.

3:12 Play this in slow motion and look for this. As his skis turn, look for him to try to Kneel Down on the fall line as the skis pass under him. Look how his upper body, from his face down to his kneecaps just go straight down the hill. His new leg angle is created because his skis are going to the side while his upper body is going down the hill. Look how his thigh is always pointed down the hill while his feet moving to the side make his lower leg lean over. This is why most instructors tell you to Tip your knees to the side because that is what it Looks Like. It is actually your feet going to the side with your skis that creates that visual affect.
@JB91710
@JB91710 9 ай бұрын
Those "UP" motions you see are actually "Down The Hill" motions. While your skis are crossing the slope with your pelvis leaning up the hill, leaning down the hill will change the leg angle to lean down the hill. That's what rolls your skis over onto the opposite edges so the skis will turn. When you are finishing one turn, you throw your upper body down the hill to quickly change the leg angle as your get off your downhill foot and balance on your uphill foot. The skis design will make the turn for you.

@@AlltracksAcademy So it locks the upper body into a down the hill facing lean for balance over the turning ski? What if the person gets off balance while doing that? What if they start leaning too far down the hill? Wouldn't that ski, and leg be better at controlling balance in both directions if it was in a natural location? Stand up now and balance on your right foot with your left leg next to your right. If you have trouble balancing, you have that left leg to help you no matter which way you lean. Now cross your left foot over your right foot and see how balanced you are. You should feel much less balanced. It's kind of like walking a tight rope with your arms at your side rather than out to the side. If you fell to the right, you would fall right over.

@@MikeJohnson-pb9uh A drill that teaches what? That teaches who? It can be performed by an instructor or already capable skier but what does it do for a beginning parallel skier who doesn't have that perfect balance and total confidence? See what I mean? Who is that for? It's just a useless drill that is something fun to do for advanced skiers. It's a trick! A teaching Gimmick! Something to waste time with during a lesson to complicate the students and make them feel even more uncoordinated so they need to come back for more lessons. I started teaching in 1968. I know what works and what doesn't. The things that don't, I don't use when I teach because I am a teacher, not a performer.

But that doesn't explain what it does to help a skier. That's just name dropping. "I guess if everybody does it, it must be right." Wrong! It is only right if it makes sense and accomplishes something. What does it do to allow that uphill ski to turn? I see it as just a gimmick that will confuse the student, take their concentration away from what is really important and could even trip them up. Ever since shaped skis came along, the need for exercises and gimmicks went the way of the Dodo Bird.

Now, what does the student think about and do to create this? You can see it in his turns. At the start of the new turn you say, "I want to go straight down the hill, get off my downhill foot. I want to go straight down the hill, get off my downhill foot." Notice at the start of each turn, he is ever so slightly facing and leaning his upper body down the hill. When he does that, watch his leg angle change from leaning up the hill to down the hill. That, is what rolls the ski over, not thinking about rolling your ankles over or tipping your knees to the side. Fancy words don't teach, simple plain language does.

50% of your absorption is coming from your lower back hinging forward. Keeping a more upright position will force you to absorb more with your knees and to flex more into your shins which will set you up in a better body position at the initiation of the next turn. Or you can go ahead and rock onto your heels at the end of the turn (the point of max absorption) which is also totally ok as long as you aggressively topple onto your shins at the initiation (more of a slalom skier style where there is a lot of fore and aft weight shifting). What you are doing probably perfectly ok. 90% of the time, but if you get into moguls going fast or other choppy terrain, that hinging approach will just be too disruptive to maintain balance. Guy, I *love* your videos and admire you as a skier, so this is just a nitpick which you and others may very well disagree with. Thanks for the great content!!
