Its early days for PCIE 5 power supplies and the ATX 3.0 standard, but both will be very useful for the new generation of 450w GPUs which began with the RTX 3090 Ti and which no doubt will continue with the RTX 40 series and the upcoming Radeon 7000 series.

One factor most PC builders should consider is their home electrical outlets. Most outlets are rated for 15 amps and use 14 gauge wires. A 20 amp outlet uses 12 gauge wires. The smaller the gauge, the thicker the wires. Most of us connect power surge protector strips to the wall outlet to provide power to the PC and other devices. One might connect their PC power supply, monitor, printer, speakers, subwoofer, modem, router, and other electrical devices to the strip. These all draw power from the wall outlet, be it single or duplex in design. The total wattage these components draw can overload the house power supply and trip a circuit breaker. Outlets are usually wired in series, meaning they share a common circuit. A high-wattage device, like a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer, can easily overpower the circuit and trip its breaker resulting in loss of power to all devices connected to that circuit. I've installed a 20 amp wall outlet in my gamer room. It uses a 12 gauge wire that connects to the house power box on its own separate circuit. I also make sure to only use power strips that use 12 gauge wires. Some strips only use 14 or 16-gauge wires.

This, I have a 1000 watt MEG a1000p and with its monitoring software the highest draw I have seen is around 600 (4090 and a 13900ks). People are smoking some good shit. I would feel a little ick about running an 850 watt, but if you dont have a million fans and physical hard disks you would still probably be fine as long as the PSU is good.

We've been using a 1000w corsair PSU for the past year for rendering 4k footage from Unreal Engine with an RTX 4090. This is probably one of the most intensive things you can do with the GPU and he's correct, it's not enough headroom, not with our current build. We've had so many random shut downs during our renders. We've exhausted all other possibilities for the crashes and looking at the power consumption of all the connected hardware, in our case 1000w is cutting it too close.

$460 - $560 for a PSU - they lost their minds. And this 12pin connector should gro from 3x 8pins and not two and there would be no need to make them double. So as for now, I will search for a standard solution so I can plug three (or four) separate 8 pins cables from my PSU to the GPU so EVGA for $200 sounds way more reasonable.

If the PSU isn't ATX3.0, it means it can't communicate with the GPU and the GPU might end up drawing max power based on the rating of the PSU. This issue caused some cables to melt in Nvidia's own testing because the supplied adapters DON'T split the power draw evenly between the 8-pin cables and one cable might have 200+W pulled through it while it was only designed for 150W. I think it's much safer to use an ATX 3.0 PSU because you simply don't know when a disaster like this will strike or what components it plans to take with it

The cables melted due to 10 hour continuous use at 55amp draw while being bent at absurd degrees. Check out the Johnny guru interview about ATX 3.0 standard. Power supplies even today, when made high end, already fit the 3.0 standard, and wont have any issues running through the 8 pin cables currently. In fact, the corsair adapter that is currently made for their power supplies will work fine for whatever the need may be. Corsair uses high quality materials that allow up to 242w per 8 pin safely, so technically the 3x 8 pin to 12vhpwr adapter would be more efficient using their power supplies than a single 12vhpwr cable. He breaks all of this down. While the additional 4 pins do communicate with the psu, it is not necessary, and Intel wasn't even going to add that to the spec until it got to consortium approval. They added it at that point. All intel did was take everything that already existed in the psu market, and combine it to make a standard so that future psu's would be required to follow it. Johnny Guru stated that at Corsair (where he works making PSU's), they have ran the same cables into the hundreds of times and have had none of the same issues. These issues were also just reported for due diligence, and not because it was a common or wide spread issue. Go find the Johhny guru interview on ATX 3.0 and you will see what I am talking about. Beyond all of this, there are people at nVidia directly that are running the 4090 on an 850w atx 2.0 PSU that is using an adapter for it and having absolutely no issues, due to the psu's already basically being atx 3.0 without the title. 850w is a completely fine amount of power to run on these GPUs even with a slight overclock for most builds. For example, a 12900k, 4090, and all other components included will still have headroom for the build on the 850w psu.
@mattedwards8128
@mattedwards8128 2 жыл бұрын
@Jo Blow Current 8 pin connectors are rated for similar amounts. Just because they are rated for that, does not mean they will fail. Johnny guru went in depth on this topic and explained that the only reason they were having issues even after 30 - 40 connections was due to running a continuous 10 hour 55 amp cycle. They would then disconnect it, reconnect it, then run the cycle again. He stated that at Corsair (where he works), they have run the same cables into the hundreds of times and have had none of the same issues. These issues were also just reported for due diligence, and not because it was a common or wide spread issue. Go find the Johhny guru interview on ATX 3.0 and you will see what I am talking about. Further more, the cables had to be bent at extreme angles to have any issues. Johnny Guru even zip tied the cables together at a heavy bend and had any issues. He does state that he would prefer to use a native connection simply due to less points of potential failure, but that it is perfectly 100% safe to use an adapter on an old PSU as long as the psu is of a high standard.

It's always best to get a PSU with the most watts you can afford and the highest certification. The lower percentage of the Power Supply Unit you use, the more efficient it is (less heat, less watts). In contrast, if you are using 90% of your PSU wattage, it's going to run hot and have a fast spinning fan. The more heat that is generated inside your computer, the more cooling you will need for your computer AND your home. This means, saving money on a low watt PSU, is going to cost you a lot more money to run it.

@@kiptt7082 I hadn't looked directly at the wattages to consider what you said. However, a microwave runs at 900-1500 watts and they say that microwaves and hair driers are small appliances that use a lot of electricity. So maybe we have reached or are reaching a point, where gaming graphics cards are being made using too much power, to the point that it isn't worth the cost to buy the card and the electricity and heat generated, just to play more demanding video games, when we can play lower demanding video games on cheaper cards using less power and putting out less heat.

highest total draw i have seen is a little over 600 watts gaming with a 4090 and 13900ks. 1000 watt is more than enough. I feel 850 could be a little close to the sun but if it is a really good psu it will probably be fine as long as you dont have a million other components and aren't overclocking like crazy.

how do you count power out and got 1600? 50% give maximum efficient (300w cpu + 666)*2=1800w lol... now to reality 450w gpu 200w cpu in mid range situation 400+150... man however you count you should take 1000w... probably 1200 if use something like cryo intel technology that can eat those 200w... and for sure if unlock that 4090 to push itself over 600w it's only one situation when you need 1600w or better 1800... aha... final recommendation is 1000, i'm acting too fast hahaha

Good visuals on the video but PLEASE invest a few bucks in a filter to put between your mouth and mic. All those pops and clicks tell me you have no filter at all and all that noise is spit slapping around your mouth. We all have it, but when someone shoots for super clear audio and disregards the importance of a mouth filter, audiophiles like me that know it's spit they're hearing can't watch/listen for more than a few seconds. Not being a hater, just that I have 12 channels and won't even watch my earliest content because of the same disgusting sounds that I didn't know way back then, haha.

i have the EVGA G2 1KW, got it 6 years ago , its main components are made by Super Flower, its working great and not planning to replace it just for the cable, if i end up getting one of the 4000 series cards (Which i doubt), its definitely not going to be 4090 and above due its ridiculous power draw and price. However, i remember in the past (AFAIR Nvidia Fermi Era), the norm was 500W back then, but with the release of Nvidia GPUs, it was required to get 750W+ , and there was these ridiculous 1400+W PSUs, then after a year, all went to dust as they came up with new architecture that has major performance uplift with alot less power, so i believe next generations will get back to a sane power draw with better performance uplift especially when moving to 3nm and maybe samsung's 1.4nm.

It’s looking like you will have to buy a new 3.0 psu, the problem is the 2.0 can’t provide the data to the gpu unlike the new 3.0, so you could run the risk of the gpu not knowing what to do so it will naturally just pull all the power it can as default, which is too much for the cables and will either melt them or cause a fire. I’m in the same situation I just bought a 1000w platinum psu planning for the release of the 4090. But I can see the new psu’s being very expensive, also the 4090 is ridiculously expensive. I’m tempted to just stay with my 3080 for a while longer to see if the cables can be upgraded to work with 2.0 or just buy a 3090ti and skip the 40 series

1600w is overkill and a waste of money. a 1000w is more than enough for the 4090 your rig will consume a total of 750W at FULL load and that really pushing it! so you will have 250-300W of head room in intense benchmark and gaming sessions and that is really good.
