Power Trip (2023) Concert Review
Power Trip was a gigantic heavy metal and hard rock music festival out in Indio, California on October 6-8. The lineup featured Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Tool, and Metallica! The festival had some great music but was bogged down by big issues from the concert promoter and the people running the event. Check out my review of Power Trip!

AC/DC haven't played since 2016 and they played their biggest setlist ever including some tracks that haven't been played live since God knows when. I believe they were the best out of all the bands at the festival

To me tool sounded the second best, after ACDC.. but I was already a fan. I agree that the fans during Metallica seemed lifeless.. James kept saying "Come on Indio!"... but that's what happens when ticket prices are so much.. ... it excluded many true fans.

A band like Maiden is going to do what they do. They don’t change for anyone outside of their organization. Steve Harris has been this way since he started the band 40+ years ago.

I watched every band.. It’s cool to see Angus Young and Brian giving it their all. I have to say the one band who REALLY stood out to me was Judas Priest. Amazing how they sounded overall. The set list of songs and the way they delivered. In a few years we won’t have some of these bands performing. We grew up in a amazing time for hard rock and Metal!

Yes, Saturday night was definitely the highlight! Priest brought it, and AC/DC (after 7 years off) still sounded pretty freaking great, and a couple of them are in their 70's!

Im a die hard Maiden fan and I understand it was another stop on the tour and I was fine with the set, as I had seen them so many times so it was nice it was different. Judas bringing out Glen almost brought a tear to my eye. I loved it. I was never a tool fan, they sounded good but never really jammed to them.

As a huge Tool fan it amuses me to no end to see how much backslash there was from many people who were seeing Tool for the first time. No they've never had visuals of the band members on their video screens. Yes, they play clinically and are perfectionists. Also they really REALLY don't play their best material live anymore, unfortunately.

@@pedrobenitezherrero9191 I wouldn't word it the way OP did, but I get what he means. The band's most iconic songs weren't performed. Sober, Schism, Lateralus, Parabol/Parabola, Vicarious, 7empest...nowhere to be seen. Part of that might be attributed to the fact that they had the shortest setlist. Don't know who's decision that was but it was a sucky decision. Not even an encore for them, despite every other band besides GNR getting one (GNR of course played up to their curfew so they couldn't). Really disappointed that we didn't get some of their best known tracks, but the songs we did get, KILLER!

The only reason I went was because of AC/DC and they did not disappoint. In fact they went above my expectations. I was certain they would play maybe 12 songs but they literally played twice as much haha. The moment Angus stepped onto the stage I immediately started bawling. I traveled from Brazil and I had only a few days in the US and I decided to skip the last day (never heard of Tool and bot a big fan of Metallica) and I don't feel like I missed anything. I was at The Pit and it felt a little dead to me too. Maybe it's because I'm used to the south american environment. We are loud and we're crazy haha. The overall organization as lacking. Lots of lines, all in the sun. The worst part for me was that you couldn't do anything after the concerts. I couldn't buy any merch and had to sneak in food to eat after the concerts because everything was already closed.

If you have a bunch of old bands from the 70's & 80's then you're going to have a bunch of old fans. The pits were probably just full of people with free passes. What is surprising is that after doing Coachella for 20 plus years that they still haven't gotten parking sorted out.

Friday, someone forgot that light travels faster than sound, so the video sync for the folks in the back was off by several seconds. That combined with Axl's vocal issues and the general lack of organization beforehand made for a very disappointing first night. They did fix some of the issues over the course of the weekend.

I was there and sitting in the GA ADA seating area. I agree that the music was very good, though the mix for Metallica was very muddy. I also agree that the event was not run well at all!!! It's interesting that Angus messed up the beginning of Thunderstruck because I've heard him say it's very tricky and he spends a lot of time just on it just before shows. Brian was hard to gauge from the phone recording I heard, but I know they started dropping a step on the Black Ice tour and Brian handles shows better. If they just did newer songs he'd have a cakewalk. Long as he doesn't hurt himself I'd rather he just be up there doing what he can always instead of another singer.

Very glad for having joined this awesome Event. I agree in several points. Well organised, almost no waiting lines (except the Mmerchandising shops) but the ticketing process resp the customer Service was just disgusting. Tickets did not arrive by internat Shipping. Email, opened a request, had a Phone call. No Reaction at all. The reason was that my wife orrdered the Tickets and I paid it via Paypal. Two different prenames!!! Just a short answer by email would have saved my nerves from Ruin. After picking the Tickets at will call Office the wristbands didn't work. But the Lady at the helpdesk gave us new ones so that finally we could enter now. Hard work and a lot of trouble for spending half of a monthly salaries. Oh - and regarding the crowd: never experienced such a dead and stiff Audience compared to Metallica Concerts in Europe, even at the seated floor areas. Sorry to say that, guys.

I agree with all you said about the music. As for everything else, I was there with a friend and we had a different experience. We received our bands and shuttle passes by mail a few weeks before. There wasn't any waiting time to get in the shuttle to the festival and we never waited more than 15 minutes for the shuttle to go back to the hotel. We ordered our merchandise on the app and picked it up in minutes at the dedicated online order line. There wasn't any way at food vendors or at the bar either. It felt organized to us. Our only complain really was that everything was so expensive, including our pit tickets, but it really was a once-in-a-lifetime for my friend and I.

I agree with almost everything except GnR's 3 hour set was a little too long. They could have cut out the fluff and only play their hits and that could have been an awesome 2 hour set. Yeah, I agree that the crowd was pretty restrained where I was (way back in GA). During Metallica's set it was me and like two other dudes who were actually rocking out. Everyone else was just sitting or standing there. I figured, "okay, Metallica's closing out the entire festival--everyone who's there during their set will be diehards and the energy will pick up" but nope. Haha. Even the guy behind me was SLEEPING in his folding chair! Pitiful! Like, I get that it was a long hot weekend, but come onnnnnnnnnn. I do wonder how much the cost and heat affected the overall vibe, tho. $600 base pay is a lot for younger fans to swing and I don't think people were expecting it to get as hot as it did, especially since it had been fairly cool in so Cal in the weeks leading up. I was born and raised here and even I was struggling, especially on Friday which felt like the hottest day. I guess the middle-aged/older fans just went into Energy Efficient Mode and didn't want to exert themselves too much. All in all, though, it was fun. I got sicker than shit the next day and have been coughing my lungs up (that beautiful desert dust) but it was worth it!

I bought Mid grandstand seats and only was there for maiden and guns. The other 2 nights, i was in GA because that shit was way more fun that the lifeless grandstands. I know better for next time. Sad at the waste of funds but the energy and memories are what i prefer. ACDC FUCKING WAS THE HIGHLIGHT and the major reason i wanted to go. Seeing both them and Ozzy would've been sick. In regards to the crowd, you were there did you not notice the crowd skewed heavily and I mean heavily older. Over 40’s and 50’s aren’t exactly going to be moshing or headbanging like the under 30 crowd. One thing I sure noticed in the merch booths, food stands, and the crowd around me on the field was that most people there on the younger side was there in a group with their family or rather they got to go because of their parents. Not like many 18-24 year olds can drop 700$ or more on one ticket. My biggest complaint about the festival was the merch booths.

My biggest problem was the parking. Not only was it not specific but the employees had zero idea where to lead us on the first day. Luckily by chance we found the right parking area with employees that knew we were in the right place. Even though I get the Tool fans are beyond happy and I understand they are talented musicians but it didn’t fit the vibe of the festival. I wasn't there. Was just too expensive. It's a shame most of the bands just treated as judt another tour date. You won't get those bands together again before they call it a day. I'm not surprised Maiden didn't do something special for the event. They never do. By adding just one more 80s song that they've played loads before would have been a real nice nod to the event. Metallica don't seem to pull many surprises anymore. I thought they would definitely throw in a song that they haven't played for ages... Sadly not. As for the heat.... Will always be a risk for the promotor wanting a 90k venue and good weather. Would it have been better if was raining all weekend?

Maiden would not do a different setlist because that would be unfair on all the fans that trooped around Europe this year . I adore Maiden . This July in Nottingham was my 27th show way back from 1986 . It was not without its criticisms though. The new screens .Not for me I prefer the old backdrops. So good to hear Alexander The Great Live . But That and Hell on Earth with The Death of the Celts .... Ummm. I thought Bruce ( Love him ) Had tempered his pantomime theatrics down with the legacy tour . I have no need for a Lazer gun show . If you are going to perform Heaven Can Wait. I prefer the road crew version. Anyway that's me rant over. ❤️💚🩷💙🩵

People in my section were going crazy for Metallica, everyone on their feet, head banging, screaming their heads off. Sounds like you were in the quiet section.

I might've been in a crappy section, Axl can get Mickey Mousey at points, but he can still do like 90% of stuff. As for Tool, I'll have to give them another try at some point. And Priest is Priest, I don't think they can have a bad concert at this point.

I was there, the will call line sucked, but I'm not sure there's a better solution. Merchandise lines were impossible, I just decided to order online after the festival. The heat? - brutal but that's October in the desert, not their fault it was hotter than usual. The music was awesome and I didn't let anything distract from enjoying some of my favorite bands. I've seen amazing shows, this is as memorable an experience as I've ever had. TLDR: weak bitches whine about everything, if you wanted to rock, you got it good and hard.

It’s fine to wait in a will call line for an hour, but for the promoters who know the landscape and weather, to not put out shade for people is borderline malicious.

Maiden kicked ass Guns was average Axl not to shit hot Judas fucking Priest stole the show unreal the definition of metal amazing AC/DC was killer Tool I’m sure was ok but spent that time walking around checking the venue out Metallica was fucking killer the only thing that sucked and sucked bad was the lame crowd felt sorry for all the bands having to play for such a fucking bunch of non-responsive, low energy phone holders Seems like a crowd to be more fitted for a Céline Dion concert if this concert was in South America or Europe, the fans would’ve been bouncing up and down, screaming every lyrics, hands, in the air banging their heads the whole time

Wow, really, Axel’s voice was super off, way high, you didn’t notice? Watch the video on my channel, he and Duff were totally off. But maybe I was the only sober person there. Maybe you are not a Guns and Roses super lover. I lived, ate, and breathed their songs from the 80s. They were me in tears disappointing I give them a C only because Slash got an an A +. I thought Tool was fantastic. I agree Goldenvoice needs to get their shit together, especially at these high prices. It was dirty. The lines were too long and they’ve been doing these festivals for decades. Some people paid $1700 for their pass or more. I bought merchandise pre-order and I had to stand in line for an hour and a half to pick up my merchandise that I “wouldn’t have to stand in line for” according to GV totally disappointing. I’m so glad I was in reserve seating.. all of the bands, except for Guns N’ Roses were fantastic, which saved the event. I do not know why Metallica did not play until midnight. They could’ve played Unforgiven until midnight, and that would’ve just been perfect.

Everyone has their opinion and a lot of people said TOOL should not have been on this tour but I AM a huge fan and thought they fit in pretty well and enjoyed their set and light show and back drops. Im not a G'n'R fan one bit but I have seen all the other bands more than 3-5 times. Thought it was a nice mix and for the most part a kick ass concert. These are the top names in hard rock/heavy metal today so it made sense, I mean we cant see Van Halen any longer but that would have been the kicker!!!!

I was there for all 3 days - Guns N Roses was easily the worst performance of the weekend. There was a mass exodus within 4-5 songs of their set starting. You didn't ask, but I'm gonna give you my take: Judas Priest, AC/DC, and Iron Maiden were hands down the best acts of the weekend. Tool needed to have some cam's of them individually which is a major switch from their visual/musiccentric approach- seen them 3 times in various indoor arenas and it's very different than what I saw on Sunday. They were still incredible . You should listen to their music when they tour in 2024, Danny Carey .. all i gotta say. Metallica was dope don't get me wrong -- but Lars is bad - he cannot keep up! Numerous mistakes on bridges, his "machine gun" play style in spots he should be rolling... i love them, but sheesh maybe they were tired from the tour? James sounded great, Kirk is consistent but he's had better days, Rob was veryyyyy good, shout out Orion. Gun's n Roses was brutal. Slash's back has to hurt from carrying them at this point, glad i saw him rip a few songs before axel's whining forced me out. Also, I was looking for powertrip vids from this weekend and yours popped up and i was curious. Still a solid review in terms of content

To me the whole thing is ridiculous. You can see any of these bands with the exception of AC/DC right now on their own tours. I just saw guns a few weeks ago, they played for three hours and kicked ass. Nothing against any of the bands. But this festival was a joke... THREE DAYS... with SIX Bands???? To make matters worse, the ticket's were ungodly high. And worse still, the thing is so huge, that unless you can afford to be right up in the main front, you're not gonna see shit unless it's on a screen (which you can do at home online by the way) Thats the dumbest shit I ever heard of. Who has a 3 day festival with only two sets per day? That just doesn't make any sense at all to me. What the hell are you going to do for the rest of the day and night? People coming from all over the world for that? I just don't get it.

To be fair, the scheduling and actual shows were great. Starting at 7, and then having the second band start around 9:30 was magnificent. It would have been awful to have people out in the sun to see other bands during the day.

@@HunterBoldingVideo Just seems like a cash grab to me. I mean, any other Festival you go to, some of them for less money, will have 25 to 40 bands on them. I can understand why it would be brutal to be out there during the day due to its location, but damn... Just seems like a lot of money and time for a show that probably could have been done in a day.

@@Frankenberry If you're doing it in a day, there's also the egos and logistics of all the bands at play. I went to the Metal Meltdown in Las Vegas that was 4 bands, started at 7, every band played a headlining set, and it didn't end until like 3:00AM, it wasn't feasible.
