It's because they haven't been using the full capability of the engine. They Just detuned it because of porpoising.(As per Lewis Hamilton in an interview)

@@shabasnm imo, that's a very smart move. Even if they didn't have porpoising issues, getting their car a bit more reliable was crucial as they were imposed with the biggest budget cap and testing limitations going into this season. That definitely saved them quite a bit of money and parts. In the last few races, they managed to narrow the gap to RedBull and Ferrari even with straight line performance deficit. RedBull might already a bit too far at the front, but still plenty of potential to catch up and overtake Ferrari.

I want to congratulate him… F1 team is not only the drivers and what is shown on Neflix…they are the engineer that makes this team the best should continue to show that….so people new to F1 can understand that it is a championship that is nothing without its team of engineers... congratulations I loved the video I am going to use it with my students

You are so right! Mercedes as well as the entire grid have a crazy e engineering team building and pushing the limits of these Fomula 1 cars. A driver can maybe be fast so long as the team has built a decent vehicle, but that same driver is gonna have a tough time being fast if the car regularly blows engines or loses tires or just pitches electrical fits. Plus the insane technical details shown in these short tidbits are amazingly fascinating. Heh Fast-inaniting.??? Ill see myself out...

Ers is always on but it has different modes. Think of it like low medium and high but more complex than that. There is an overtake button which deploys maximum output but is only used in short bursts to make overtaking a bit easier.

The VW Beetle also had a 1600 cc engine in the 1960's and later (as well as other engine options). But I think the power output was a little lower.

Another great presentation full of interesting detail and facts which, for a simple minded retiree incredible! Why can’t all KZbinrs learn from the best F1 team in the world! I understand that they don’t want to release too much information, but this video had little details. It could be summarized as “we use special components.” How is the manifold designed? What kind of piston shape is preferred? What compression does the fuel allow for? These would be basic details.

Thermal efficiency slightly greater than 50% , would be great if some of that can be brought to Road car.

The closest you can get is project one, just slightly above 40% that too because it has the same engine with MGUH

Nah, I think Ferrari and Red Bull engines are faster but unreliable when pushed to limits but Mercedes keeping theirs reliance by sacrificing some speed still aero is a problem

Everybody says aero is a problem for the Mercs but they are king in fast and medium speed corners. Lol how does that work. Aero is not a problem unless you mean they have to much top end down force. This issue should alleviate with the new floor. More down force created from the floor instead of the front/rear wings and body means more speed on the straights = hammer/russel time.

It's not the aero, the engine simply lacks power.The RedBull blasts past the Mercedes down the straights so easily..

@@ef1112 It is due to aero, Mercs cars are too draggy because the rear tires air flow is dog water, they are basically a small parachute at this point, they can't control that flow with a side pod that lacks surface area to work with

@@minimovzEt I don't think they wouldn't have tried to change the design of their sidepods by now, if that would've been the case.Changing sidepods would be a whole lot easier than changing a frozen engine.

Will the turbo/exhaust manifolds and air intake manifolds change positions? Whereby the intakes will be mounted on the outside of the ICE and the exhaust on the inside?

I don't get the formulation of todays F1. Rev limit of 15000rpm but every body gets cut off @ 11500rpm due to fuel flow regulation doesn't make sense to me, please explain this.

If there was no PU limit to a season, based on percentage, how much more power could these engines produce?

If let's say they were to change engine after every race weekend like in the V10s era for example, they could bump up the rev limit to 16000rpm maximum during qualifying, 13000-14000rpm during a race.
