@flinch6223 ай бұрын
For me... this block is the chance to use solid flat tappets with an LS head. Lose a bunch of hyd/roller mass and maybe gain an extra 1500 controllable rpm with the right grind/spring choices. Can't use offsets in anything but a roller, so I'm excited about this combo for other than the half swap LS factor, which is what this video centered on [unfortunately]. Go 13 degree on a set of gen1 style heads and that gets expensive - this combo can get you there for less.

This concept seemed quite interesting and feasible ay the time, but it never seemed to catch on. We do roughly 80 to 90 builds each year, and we're building many small blocks from 383 to 427 and even a couple of 434's. As well, we do a few LS motors, but we've never had anyone approach us for this Chevy/LS combo. World Products produced a 1st gen block with the LS bolt pattern decks, and I expected that idea to gain some speed. The selling point was fitting LS technology into early Chevys without having to modify the crossmember and engine mounts etc. Now that several companies offer beefier LS blocks, no one seems interested in mounting LS top ends on early blocks
@stephenhodge64412 жыл бұрын
If the only benefit would be motor mounts and cross member then it doesn't make sense. Those items are super cheap compared to trying to build this over a regular LS with swap parts.

@johnalarcon50062 жыл бұрын
If they wanted to get 5 to 8 more horsepower they should have installed a 1 inch carb spacer plate only because those butter flys on the carb should be above to top of the runners and not even with them , also they should side gap all the plugs to expose the spark directly to the combustion chambers .
@danieldimitri61333 жыл бұрын
I used to think these blocks were a good idea. But it turns out stock internals are just fine on engines without detonation problems and the ls parts are well designed. While the sbc has an oil pump that doesnt eat much power the ls has ventilation between cylinders, larger cam core, a cross bolted skirted block for noise rejection and main cap stability etc... The ls has proven that the importance of a forged crank in anything but a split pin v6 is highly over rated and if you don't have to buy racecar parts then why do it? The aftermarket has addressed the oil pan situation and the lack of a distributor and even with the hybrid block headers are still a consideration and now brackets can be an issue where they wouldn't be with a true full ls. I mean if you just love distributors mechanical fuel pumps it might seem like a good idea but for the cost of an aftermarket block you could just buy afr heads and keep the 23 degree setup. Heck you could but 15 or 13 degree race heads or some used sb2 or 18 degree heads.

The “Secret” to the Ls engines power potential is in the heads. Factory LS heads flow the kind of air that big dollar aftermarket heads do for the gen 1 sbc. So those who say that a decent set of heads on a standard small block is every bit as good as an LS, doesn’t understand the limitations of the og small block (max cam lift especially when using a hydraulic roller, cooling issues especially with the siamesed exhaust ports). these are really only limitations when compared to modern engines ie the LS, a small block can make more than enough grunt for the street, that power is just easier to produce with an LS

I'd rather my conversation be about my LS7 or all aluminum BBC rather than a $2500 iron SBC with a $3500 crank with less stroke than a stock 5.3 LS. All I can surmise is World Products must have [had] a powerful boomer in their management to make this happen.

The glass pack is the loudest. Run it for a bit and the fiberglass blows out and it becomes a straight pipe. Alternatively pour some gas in it and light it to burn off the fiberglass before installing.

This decibel meter is helpful. Why don't manufacturers give us this information so we actually know how loud something is? Instead of mild or aggressive.
@sparkplug10183 жыл бұрын
Because they can't rate it for everything it might go on. Test it on a beefy 350 in a Camaro, some guy puts it on a big block Chevelle and gets a different result, and starts whining about it. So just rate them mild or aggressive and save the headache.

I'd guess the Gen 1 SBC lower end would be worth around 25-30hp, due to the LS engine having issues with bay to bay breathing.

@@bigboreracing356 you do realise the 7.0 Ls7 has 505 horsepower and you can get one for 4k right? And the 7.3 Godzilla is 430 horsepower and cost 7k. And the godzilla is a almost direct copy of a L.s being a pushrod v8 that's very similar. And there's almost 0 aftermarket for Ford and endless for GM. You can also get a used Ls7 very cheap. I'm not even a brand loyal gm guy and know that.
@177SCmaro3 жыл бұрын
@@jkirk7811 You can also just get a big block chevy and have more displacement and power than an LS7. Does that mean we shouldn't bother with the LS7? Not everyone cares about $/hp. The Godzilla is the new thing. I hope people start playing with it. It's also not a copy of the LS. It's designed to be an option to the powerstroke in pickups. And given how nuts they've gone with all this emission stuff on diesels I'd say the Godzilla is a welcome alternative.

Oh... priming the block is easier for one, and there is a bunch of gen 1 parts to choose from for the bottom end. Little things like oil pan design/clearancing for certain muscle cars would make this a good way to enjoy a set of LS heads without getting into alot of odd details and extra fitment issues. This project is for somebody going to build a new motor anyway, not refresh an old workhorse.
@gordocarbo8 ай бұрын
Kick azz upgrade, you haters make it obvious you dont even own a car yet lol Cheaper than doing an SB2.2.....guessing we would have to buy pistons for 15 deg heads? Like this, can have huge airflow and not have to change everything. Carb and HEI would be my choice. Solid roller, of course!!
@mitchwolos67586 ай бұрын
Best of both worlds would be the stronger block of the LS and the heads of the LS. This is the best of 1 world and the worst of the other.
@adventuresofabbott43743 жыл бұрын
To everybody asking why? Because of horsepower losses from oil windage. A LS deep skirt is far superior for strength, esp under forced air, but the air and oil doesntt move around as well. This setup is extremely niche', purpose built, class rules beating that actually works. But for 99.999% of the enthusiast, it is pointless

Interesting, just wish, with these types of builds, they would include the costs. I realize that Labour can be subjective and can vary from location to location, but it would be nice, when they put these beasts together, to have a Cost, even breakdown, so us plebes could get a better appreciation of where we stand. Is it UnObtanium with a Dash of Not Gonna Happen? Or is it within the realm of possibilities, if I eat Macaroni for a year to scrape up the dough to make it happen.
