It's not about the boat at all, it's about the crew your sharing your life with, sharing the laughter, sharing the food, sharing the adventure, and in the end sharing the tears.... Everyone has a special crew, it might not just be on a boat.

I started watching your channel because of the exotic destinations and sail boat challenges. However, I am a trailerable power boater having traveled Key West to Montreal and many lakes and rivers on the east coast since 2000. It has been interesting to see you and your crew make the transition to motor yacht. For me at age 62, I am trying to decide between trailerable coupe and motoryacht. Many thanks to you and your crew! Cheers!

Hey bobby I was one of the last people to see Nauti dogs sailing, you passed me sailing south in the Chesapeake and we anchored in the same anchorage for the night before you went around cape Hatteras! I remember you saying you were headed for central America, now I'm thinking about selling my sailboat for a trawler or motor yacht. You are so right about the entry price, much more. This has defiantly helped clear up some questions I've had! thank you and keep on inspiring us!

Very honest review Bobby, it’s great to hear you haven’t got a blinkered view of being on the water. Each to his own as they say, horses for courses and all that. I totally agree when you get older (70’s +) a sailing yacht on open ocean would be hard going plus the lack of comfort compared to a motor yacht. Enjoy your time on the water whatever you choose but first and foremost stay safe.

Hey Bobby, not sure you read these reviews or not but thought I would toss in my 2 cents (have not watched yet, will later :). Just based on the title, They are both great for different reasons. So here it goes, for your channel, right now, just my humble opinion (and I've watched for a couple three years now), your new power boat by far I'm finding perfect. It seems your crew is enjoying very much as well. Obviously I'd have to write pages to justify pro's and con's, so to keep it short...power baby

Great video, fantastic to get an honest comparison from someone with experience of both. I subscribed to Sailing Doodles originally when you were on your sailboat, which is what interested me. My initial reaction for when you switched to motor boating was a little disheartened, as I thought that maybe it would not be for me anymore, and your channel had been one of my favorites. But I figured I'd give it a chance, as part of the reason I subscribed in the first place was due to your personality, seeing the lifestyle, the fun guests joining you and the production value. Turns out that I still have fun watching your videos as they continue to offer all of the above (and I've even joined the Doodles Podcast since then on top), and its actually intriguing to see the difference. Particularly seeing the comparison between the two as you came from a sailing beginning. Like life, all things change. Not necessarily better or worse, just different. Keep up the great work, enjoy the life and look forward to possibly seeing that catamaran in a year or two!

Thanks! Yes, I was having trouble with this. I learning how to sail. Thru friends, Im not going long distances. I just want to go up and down the cost of Cali. this will be my first boat. At some point when I get used to the Ocean I will go longer distances. I was looking to buy a Sail boat. Figure it was cheaper for Diesel but as you said. Im not really going that far. I rather have the room. So me and my girl can have friends over and take them for sunset dinners etc... Do this for a year or 2 than when I get good at sailing do a longer trips. I ll be part time on my boat. Im now heavy leaning on power boat.

Good Video. I watch sailing EP's from others. What I don't like is the Leaning/Keiling all the time, rough waves to go along with it. But,. it is fun to watch others and sometimes I think there crazy. I have a Motor Yacht with all the luxuries as a home, presently converting to Solar as well. This saves fuel and you don't have the noise or vibration from Generator.

I’m a fan of your channel but the “you knows, I mean & likes” were so distracting that I had to stop after about 12 mins. IMHO one of the biggest differences between a monohull & a motor cruiser is the safety in bad weather. If you get caught out in storm weather in a monohull, lower the sails, batten down the hatches & even if she rolls over you should survive. In a power cruiser, if she rolls you are going to sink. This is also assuming that the motor has failed or has issues. The sea keeping properties of “gin palaces” at sea when not underway or on the plane are in my opinion very unpleasant. Keep up the good work!

Hi Bobby, Good to get your perspective since you have experience on both. The motor yacht was a definite choice for me because of the comfort and ease of going point to point. My Sirena 58 is a semi-displacemet Hull design so I get the best of both worlds. I can go over 900 NM at 8-10 kts. or if I want to push it to 25 kts. still with a range of over 300 NM. I can't cross the Pacific, but plan on shipping it from Martinique to Tahiti. From there I can continue my travels throughout French Polynesia, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Hope to see you out on the water. Paul

As you say there are pros and cons to both, so it really depends on YOU, your needs and your plans for what you want. If I were to chose right now at the age of 62 - it would be some sort of a trawler type. Space, comfort, legs and general economy, but I have sailed smaller boats 27-35 feet types for shorter periods of time in my much younger days and that was great. Still with you after your switch to "the dark side" and that is in my mind not so dark - keep it up .

Sailing: The art of getting wet and becoming ill while slowly going nowhere at great expense. Never done screwing around with it. Always trimming something or furling something. Power is the way to go. More speed, less time on the boat.Been there, done that. We both lived in a 465 knot world for a good part of our lives. I’m retired now, too, for similar reasons. Safe travels, Bobby.

This just came up on my feed so don't blame me for being late. I find there are two different thought process when it comes to boats, if you are young and still athletic they go for a sailboat. Older retired folks like the idea of turning on a motor and going. If you own a sailboat you will be going up the mast and it is a deal breaker for me now. And my experience in the Sea of Cortez was that even sailboats would wait till the wind had gone down to leave, then put on the motor because they are going to slow. My question is, why do power boats usually have such poor anchor gear? Bruce, CQR, or Danforth are just not cutting it to keep you safe. A rocna Vulcan would be a better choice, but I think powerboats spend most of the time at the marina so anchor gear doesn't matter. And lastly Bobby, you really need to take some diction lessons. If you were slapped every time you say "you know" you would soon stop. Makes you sound like a rube.

I have been watching about 8 different sailing channels. I love the community and social aspect of it. But, at 64 I don't see me sailing . So, the regional aspect of the Bahamas and Caribbean are awesome for me to do on a power boat. I have been on big lakes and rivers all my life and have always had a boat. Plus I do ALL my own mechanic work ,right down to rebuilding engines. So power boat to the Bahamas is it for me.

Losing an engine is far more common though. And for your backup to be the exact same model with identical maintenance and running hours, running on the same fuel as the motor that just failed is not ideal.

Most boats have no air-conditioning and are not intended for you to live aboard. You have to get north of a half million dollars before you start getting into live aboards with air conditioning ad real beds with real mattresses. Unless you are waterskiing or tubing you don't need the power of a powerboat. A small engine in a sailboat is all you need.

If you an afford a cat then it is great for comfort, no one can dispute that. The biggest issues with cats is the slapping on the bottom of the bridge deck, which many modern cats have minimised quite well. Check out the channel, Sailing Aequus, they have a brand new 59 foot Bavaria and it is super nice, can even single hand sail with ease. New Amel 60 are also amazing but these will cost over 500k new easy. More like 900k-1 million, once you spec it out properly. You know this from your boat tours you used to do, when lockdown non sense stops are you going to go back to the boat shows and do more tours, always like your tours, super relaxed and from a reasonable perspective.

The actual travel, you need to do more physical work on a sailboat, with the constant vigilance for making those adjustments to keep her under control. On a power boat, the travel is much more relaxing time. Maintenance costs work out about the same. Even with your motor yacht style, you can reduce your fuel burn by reducing your speed, try running at 5-6 knots for your next long run and see the difference in burn. One power boat style to consider is the motor sailor, Nordhavn makes one though the more commonly known is the Diesel Duck and diesel Swan.

Good balanced points. For sure if money is no object just drop into a big power-cruiser or sailing cat but most of us should just go out and try something - maybe a charter first. Lot cheaper to get into a mono sailboat first and learn the lessons that has to offer - then work through it. Definitely no reason to assume any one decision has to be stuck with! Cheers

Thanks for your impartiality regarding sail and power..Motor boat/trawler. I can see that the Pacific beckons! The most reliable passage must surely be sail and two economical engines! But there are light airs so, a vessel that is light may be the best option under sail! A Cat can cruise at 70% of its optimum twin engine speed on one engine but at remarkably less GPH than a trawler or a motor cruiser! I guess that when all considered in these times, that the environment must always benefit too! But when arriving at destination who wins? Well I guess that depends on the personalities on board! Choose your crew accordingly I guess. Thanks for your opinion, much appreciated.
