I'm confused a little. Say the Google web server sends responses back to the source how will the router know which host to send responses if MAC addresses swap from hardware to hardware? On top of that the IP address is translated from private to public and vice versa. How does the router determine which private IP made the requests? When two hosts in two different networks want to communicate do they use private or public IPs?

One minor point. While MAC addresses are supposed to be unique, this isn't always so. Some manufacturers have been known to reuse them. Regardless, since MAC addresses are relevant only on the local network, this is usually not a problem. With IP, the MAC address is discarded at the first router and replaced with the MAC address of the interface on the next hop, etc.. Also, there are some links that don't have a MAC address. These would typically software created links, such as VPNs. The router only has to know how to reach the next hop and that can be designated by just the interface.

Extra note: with the additional usage of virtual machines, VM kind of cloned the physical card and provide you with an "additional MAC address". On a side note, you can actually spoofed your MAC address on some NIC (commonly used in packet injection for WIFI hacking). In such scenarios, MAC addresses can actually be not unique.
@mach22232 жыл бұрын
Right, they also usually take the duplicate MAC address NICs and ship them off to different parts of the world, so there's even less of a chance they'll ever meet in a single network and cause problems.
