This is exactly what I had to learn for a problem at work. I found myself caught between 3 vendors for our business. ISP provider was deprecating our 'Copper Loop' lines (the old phone line infrastructure), Bell would not extend copper loop services (Only fiber optic), and our alarm company insisted we maintained a copper loop line. We resolved this conundrum by deploying GSM (radio, same tech as cell phones) module for our secondary alarm channel.

We use Mitel VoIP phones at my job and another benefit I like is that you can daisy chain and connect the phone to a computer for power as well(as long as the phone has two network ports). This comes in handy, like a ticket I had last week, where the run to the data drop wasn’t long enough as compared to where the phone was in the room.

Pretty good explanation, though I have a couple of questions: 1) With VoIP, can you call non-VoIP devices? Like, could you call from a VoIP phone/app to a cell phone (or any other non-connected VoIP device/service)? 2) Can you do vice versa? From a cell phone (or any other non-connected to VoIP device/service) call a VoIP number? 3) In in those two scenarios, would the charge for both parties be the same or would it differ? 4) Is modern cell calling still uses traditional cells or is it using like a mobile broadband to make the calls (and/or to connect to the VoIP)? Yes you can call to non-VOIP numbers from a VOIP service. The cost greatly depends on the VOIP provider. Most charge a flat monthly fee, but it depends on the provider and plan.

What if the person you are calling does not have a VoIP phone? How does this get routed back to their phone line?

The call made from a voip phone would reach telco central office through a sip/pri trunk. Once telco receives the number string, it would route the call as usual how it handles a normal cellphone call.

You use a VOIP provider and SIP trunk. The provider assigns you a phone number and with the SIP trunk, you can make and receive calls to the outside world as you would with any other phone.

I would assume so. At least in the US, it is getting increasingly difficult to get a traditional phone line. Most providers only sell digital (VOIP) service nowadays. And it makes sense for business use cases.

Of course. You need some way to connect to the PSTN. You use a SIP trunk from a VOIP provider to get access to the outside world. In other words, you can setup your own internal VOIP system, but you can't call anyone outside of your VOIP system unless you go through a SIP trunk of sorts.

Yes, because with Wi-Fi calling, your phone basically talks to your cellphone provider over your Wi-Fi network rather than through the 4G/5G service. Its useful if you're in an area with weak or no cell service, but still have Wi-Fi.
