Thank you for the comparison! Just what I was searching for. If I may ask - how important are the preamps for you in your choice of mixer/interface? I'm about to swap the Focusrite Clarett for a Model 24 (ran out of inputs), and it kind of bugs me that most mixers that give you a lot - but do not set you back a fortune - have sub-par preamps compared to audio interface ones. I came across a post on Gearspace, where people have said that the Model 24's preamps are just "OK". But you did say they are an improvement over the DP32SD, which sounds encouraging. How concerned should I be when throwing the Clarett away, in your opinion? And do you have any comments on how the 24 compares to some other mixers/interfaces you've used? Thanks for any wisdom you can offer on the matter!

I never pulled the trigger on either of the Model series mixers because they aren’t complete stand alone production units like the DP units are. I’m still hoping Tascam realizes they need to make a new and improved Digital Portastudio.

Great explanation. For an old-school guy not necessarily acquainted with DAW recording, this was very helpful indeed.

I went with the 24 because it operates more like the old analogue recorders of years ago. To each his own, they are both great units. I started in the 70s with a Teac A3340, then had a Tascam 38, then a 238, then a DA38. Then a DP03, now the 24.

Thank you for the informative video, Powercoat! One big difference between these two models is that the DP-32SD allows for audio editing, such as cutting, copying, pasting, and deleting of specific audio parts on tracks. The Model 24 has no audio editing functionality.

I have a Model 12 and editing functionality would make it perfect, instead of having to use a DAW to edit. Also, assignability of inputs would be great to have. That said, the DAW/surface control functionality are really interesting. I just wish that it could be used for editing when there's no computer around. Tascam should revamp the DP series, though, adding MIDI back and making them look more like the Model series. DP12/24/32? The workflow on these is great, like up sized versions of the excellent DP-008ex.
@dariu5954 Жыл бұрын
@@Unclebrud I agree. Those changes would almost make the Tascam Model 12 a one-stop shop. The DP-24 and 32 would benefit greatly from a dedicated timecode sync and/or wordclock. The internal metronome is a bit off compared to ones that I printed and loaded into the machine, which needs fixing. The editing on the DP24/32 needs fixing as well, as it is not sample accurate.

I own both these recorders, as well as a NEO 2488 and a DP-02. I run my signal to the M24 and the M24 out into my DP32. So essentially I use the M24 as a mixer. If you’d like to hear a song I recorded using this process go on KZbin, Neutral Earth- Current Volts and Ohms and listen to the track Blue Leech. If you can afford both, its a great set up for home recording.

I have the Tascam DP-32SD and I was wondering if there would be any point to buying the Tascam Model 24? I mean can you give me a few examples of how they compliment each other? If you could I sure would appreciate it because the Model 24 has a pretty high price point. I am currently hands on using the DP32SD as my main recorder and I do not use a DAW per say but I would like to eventually get into that when I can figure out the work flow that is best for me. Can you help me out with some of the ways the Model 24 will complement my Tascam DP 32SD? Please, I can't find any information on this specific question most sites are one or the other. Thank you for your time.

@@cedricjamesjr1 I can’t point to any clear advantage or any one thing that would justify the cost. As stated I use it as a mixer, and it is an expensive one at that. I have 2 Yamaha mixers that really could do the job. I simply like being able to record to the 24 and finishing onto the 32. I do allot of cutting and pasting/moving with the 32, after transferring tracks from the 24. Truth be told, I have two DP32s, a neo 2488 and a DP02. I use them all in different ways. Using the 24 as a mixer is a nice option if you have the budget; even a M12 would be nice, but neither are absolutely necessary to record a quality song. Most Neutral Earth songs; and my songs-“Twelve Ounce Trance” were completed on the DP32 alone.

$400 more for 14 more simultaneous recording tracks, faders twice the lenght, analog strips feel & warmth, comp knob, a dozen more onboard effect, 6 band Master EQ, extra inserts and more, let alone the DAW interface capabilities, sounds like it's way more than worth the half a week of my life's labour time. Thanks so much as always for your precise information and delivery.

Unless you need all of the features on the Model series, or if you have expendable money, it seems like the DP series is going to get the job done, and in some ways it's better than the Model series. The Model series is also better than the DP in other ways. I think the DP is a good first option for people who are trying to make ends meet, and don't have 8-1k to spend on a Model 24. I was going to go in debt to get a Model 12-24, but I think I'm going to start with one of the DP's, and then get a Model down the road sometime. I think they're both good machines to have, but right now, I can get by with a DP-32. I was basically going to use the Model the same way as the DP. I already own an interface, so that function isn't necessary. I own DAWs and VSTs, so my plan was to track/mix on hardware, and then do my post production with vsts on my computer. I would love to have the Model 24, but I'm also trying to build a hardware synth setup, and I only own a minilogue xd, and a MPC Live 2, so I'm not satisfied with spending all of my budget on a Model 24. After I get a few more synths, then I may get one. It wouldn't hurt to have a DP and a Model to use. Then if I find myself not using one of them, I can always put it on Reverb or Ebay. Hopefully the world doesn't go up in flames before that.

I have a DP-32sd that I bought in 2016. I didn't really use it much till 2019 and now, I'm having several of the push buttons fail and some scratchiness on some of the pots. This is an unaddressed issue with the analog to digital units.... wearing out. With a DAW computer and software setup, I think it might last longer. It will probably be as much as a new unit to fix it, so......
@PowercoatMusic Жыл бұрын
Actually, I have addressed your concerns in videos previously. It's critical to keep units in areas that are not too dry or humid, hot or cold. This goes for many other electronic products as well. Some ignore this vital tip and suffer the symptoms you described. Everything wears out at some point, but with the proper care and maintenance these units can last decades. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for you videos & fast response. I do try my best to keep it in an even environment along with my acoustic guitars. The problem is, it seems to be the buttons and channels I use the most. I think it's a matter of wear and tear in this case.

Hey nice comparison vid I went with the 32. I have a question can you edit the start time? I have a sync track going thru a motu to an MPC. I got it all synced up but there’s a delay at the beginning where the tascam has to catch the signal can I edit the sync track to properly start or is this just the way it goes?
@PowercoatMusic3 жыл бұрын
The answer to your question is “Yes”. You would need to perform a “Move” or "Copy/Paste" operation on each of the tracks for your song to achieve you goal. For more on how to do this watch my video “Tascam DP24/DP32 Digital Portastudio: Track Editing” on this channel. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
