I grew up Southern Baptist and I still took a ride on that long black train but the Lord pulled me back even though we can't see it the Lord is powerful and gracious everybody just remember and sometimes I forget but thank him everyday for what we have

Great reaction, from a Christian viewpoint this is an uplifting and beautiful song, whether we struggle with gluttony, addiction, etc, we all have access to heaven anyway, we just have to choose Him instead of 'the long black train.'

Tim Foust from Home Free does a great cover of "Long Black Train" with Chris Rupp. Tim also does a great version of "Your Man". I think you would really enjoy both songs. Tim is one of the few bass singers today that can really do justice to any Josh Turner song.

Heartfelt reaction! I think this was Josh's first hit. He's a true Christian who walks the walk; so this is his message to those who are Spiritually lost that they can overcome the evil through accepting Jesus as their Savior! Great reaction to a fantastic song. This was his first hit. When he play it at the Grand Old Opry the first time he got interrupted with fa standing ovation part of the way thru the song and he to start it over for the audience. Your next Josh Turner song should be WOULD YOU GO WITH ME. This upbeat song really makes his deep voice stand out. You and your family have a blessed day.

I always considered this an old fashioned Southern Gospel song disguised as a Country Song. It reminds me of something Johnny Cash, Porter Waggoner or the Statler Brothers would have written and recorded.

I could be wrong, but if I recall, I think he said at some point that he wrote this after having a dream about a vision like that. And the train represents various addictions and ways that people escape and hide from their problems, rather than facing them head on and looking to God for the strength to work through them. Extremely powerful, and one of my favorites, too. I've seen the video dozens of times and I still tear up a little.

As I understand the song, the train symbolizes temptation. "That train is a beauty making everybody stare, but its only destination is the middle of nowhere." The song seems to be saying that Satan uses any means possible to keep us from following God, and that when we give into temptation, the consequences are alcoholism, depression, unwanted pregnancy, etc. But the song also says that God is willing to forgive us. "I stand at the door and knock." (Rev 3:20)
