When you mentioned Europeans reaction to God, it reminded me of going through airport security in a European city. The man checking my carry--on took my bible out, paged through it and then tossed it aside with a look of disdain/disgust on his face. It was so shocking to me, I will never forget that look. The thing about songs like this is, not only is it incredibly well-known here, it really gives a lot of insight into the culture of (most) of the South. Faith and religion are huge parts of the culture and it's pretty common for people to be incredibly open about that here. We have an industrial history and there's some nostalgia for that, so the imagery of a train works well here. In terms of struggles, teenage pregnancy, drinking and drugs (especially pills) have always been and continue to be an issue. So when you listen to this song, if you really pay attention, you get to know a piece of the south.

I was going to suggest Randy Travis, too, given that they liked Josh's baritone voice (Trace Atkins also has a nice, low voice). Randy Travis songs I'd recommend: "Three Wooden Crosses", "Deeper Than the Holler", "Forever and Ever Amen", "On the Other Hand". For more country gospel type songs, gotta love the hundred country legends who joined in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZO1e3-hg9aBjqs), "Go Rest High on that Mountain" by Vince Gill, or "Believe" by Brooks and Dunn.

You must remember America was founded by the most religious of the Europeans. A lot of the British Isles have lost the knowledge that these specific Europeans are the tribes of Israel. They tend to fall into two categories. The more religious and the very wicked. In American country music, it is still very common to sing gospel music along with the traditional Country and Bluegrass. Both will also have very strong "Christian" overtones and words.

As I understand the song, the train symbolizes temptation. "That train is a beauty making everybody stare, but its only destination is the middle of nowhere." The song seems to be saying that Satan uses any means possible to keep us from following God, and that when we give into temptation, the consequences are alcoholism, depression, unwanted pregnancy, etc. But the song also says that God is willing to forgive us. "I stand at the door and knock." (Rev 3:20)

Since I have accepted him into my heart, I have joy and peace that cannot be explained. My life has been changed and now I have a new purpose in life and serve Him to the best of my ability everyday. I pray that one day you will accept into your heart and I promise you that your life will change and have the same peace and joy I experience from God.

It ain't about condemning sinners, it's about having hope, everyone's a sinner, but sin eats us up, it steals our will to live. Sin poisons the heart, soul, mind and life. It's a slow poison, a long, black train, that promises happiness, but never delivers. Jesus said, ''Enter in at the strait gate, for strait is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to Life, and few are they that find it. Broad is the way that leads to destruction.''
