just a bit of context ;) this isn’t from an award show, this is part of a korean tv show called immortal songs, where each episode the legendary songs from a person/act or to a theme are covered by different artists the one guy in beige was Pdogg, the main producer of BTSs discography this episode was the BTS X Pdogg special, so BTS songs where being covered Spring Day was my favorite one but i also enjoyed the Blood, Sweat & Tears version by Yuk Joongwan and band

The Korean culture is very invested in the concept of "sori" and epic storytelling. If you watch Korean variety shows, the way they tell stories just hits different. Even the pansori singer from the first video uses sound effects while she talks, like "KHWAK!" "KWAL-Kwal-kwal." And Song Sohee grasps this well too. She can transform her voice from a silent wind to a rolling thunder, to even rocks tumbling down the mountainside, in a matter of seconds.

she is so talented! I’m in love with this version. I really enjoyed all the other BTS covers that were done on Immortal Songs, but this was by far the best. In the show there were also interviews with BTS, were they mostly talked about Pdogg and their old songs (if i remember correct) and talked a bit about the people doing the covers.

Wow I can't believe you reacted to this performance!! It's also great that you saw that video at the beginning, it gives a lot of context. The singer of the cover is very famous for her style of singing, which is heavily influenced by pansori. When I first heard this cover I also got so many chills over my body... And I still do every time I watch it, her voice is beautiful, very unique and has so much emotion in it

Just to clear things up, this is not Pansori. Pansori (판소리) is a kind of music of which the significance and story-telling (and even development) can be compared to that of the Western opera. It usually has more spoken sections and the singing is heavier, more fluctuating, uses generally more volume and almost always involves a 'shouting' section and a lot of grit/distortion. A good modern example is Go Yeong,- Yeol (고영열) who also appeared on this show. Song Sohee is singing Minyo (민요) which is more akin to folk music, has a different history, varies greatly from region to region and is usually more controlled and sometimes lighter than Pansori (even though both styles of singing rely on extremely great projection). Gugak (국악) is the all encompassing term used for all Korean traditional music, with or without singing. A good demonstration of the differences between Minyo and Pansori singing can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gp7NfJV3eZmhgJZo the two singers are Song Sohee and Go Yeong-Yeol
@ComedianReacts3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for clarifying that! I did wonder because I looked up Song Sohee on wikipedia after reacting to try and learn more and I couldn't find anything about Pansori mentioned there! 🤓

Yeah, this episode of Immortal Songs was FANTASTIC!!! It's a mix between an interview, a proper performance, and a competition of iconic songs from different genres / artists being performed by artists with varying styles. This episode was "The BTS Special". Their main producer, PDogg was invited to judge, and BTS did an interview prior to explain the process of making the songs and how it felt to be them at that period in time. Edit: he's the guy in a brown out fit with big glasses who was just vibing 😎

That was a very entertaining reaction! I have been requesting just about every voice teacher I can find to react to this, but so far there have been so few takers. So I was so glad to see your reaction! Song Sohee is a Grand Master of gugak, which includes pansori, minyo and other traditional arts. I love everything about this performance. The beginning sounds a bit like a hand drum solo, the middle sounds like the Chinese instrument called erhu, and some parts sound almost like a human immitation of a uillean pipe (like Davy Spillane from Riverdance). When that chorus comes in, it gets me every time, just like that guy in the school uniform holding his chest. Love the staging, costumes, and everything else. The producers thought of every detail!

The epic robes they're wearing is called "hanbok"! Korean traditional clothing...bts have been incorporating "modernized hanbok" into their own performances and MV since IDOL! You may recall this from the explained video you watched😊...some of the boys also like wearing hanbok casually, especially jungkook. Before this, they'd wear it every now and then...Jin once went viral/made news in Korea for wearing luxurious hanbok to the airport (it was a punishment, I believe, but he took it in stride and in style)

Oh, last comment (sorry, not sorry, it's engagement,least I can do) the glasses+brown-hoodie/jacket guy is PDogg. PDogg has been one of bighit's in house producers since the beginning, basically big-bro-mentor-producer-teacher-friend of bts... he has credits on nearly every major bts song. All the title tracks and singles...there are army's that will defend him to death. PDogg is a favorite ( on a complete aside, did you guys know that PDogg, Son Sungdeuk and Lee Hyun posted a reaction video to Butter! Did you see it? Wild, amirite! It was hilarious and them talking about the boys growing up well, little jungkookie growing up and how cool seokjinnie is..maaan) That why this show "Immortal Songs" kept cutting to him he was invited as the main guest to see other artists interpret these "immortal" iconic, bts songs. (I still can't belive bts songs have that much respect and regard, but I also can..they are iconic immortal songs)

Basically, the meaning of pansori is ‘pan’ means a place or floor where some people gather. ‘Sory’ is sound. In other words, imagine it like this. The story is told in an informal place where many people gather. It's a type of 'bard' from the Middle Ages in Europe, and it's a genre that reads novels. So pansori probably started with reading full-length novels to many people. As it became more professional, it became acting and singing style. In the old days, there were no microphones, and sound had to be transmitted to many people in a large place, and this had to be done for several hours. That's why they use such unique singing methods. 1. Pronunciation will travel far. 2. You will not be hoarse for several hours 3. You will be able to hear clearly Resonance, a Western singing method, has poor transmission power in an open area. To put it simply, you can think of pansori as a profession of singing novels to numerous people in a large field.
