Powerful Guard Options Using The Shoulder Wrap

This shoulder wrap type of clinch from guard is interesting and fun. I can not only lead to some great sweeps, transitions and submission setups, it can act as a counter-measure against some passes and offensive movements your opponent may throw at you. As I mention in this video, I learned this from Greg Nelson some time ago, and I have been playing with it, trying to get a deeper understanding and make it my own. Here are some of the best, highest-percentage uses I have gained from it. Hope you guys like it!

Would it be a good idea to simultaneously get your right foot butterfly hook while going for the grip technique you show here? Basically , getting that opposite side butterfly hook in so he can’t easily do the pass attempt (and so sweeping him will be easier )?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 2 жыл бұрын
The space isn’t there for the butterfly hook in the beginning and has to be created with the initial lean.

Also (as I am studying the Gordon body lock passing instructional right now - would this have any chance of working if the guy does a body lock and goes into a tight body lock pass ?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 2 жыл бұрын
Yes because it causes a lot of extra space that messes up body lock pass attempts a lot of the time

What keeps your opponent from gripping his hands behind you back after you lock the underhook, he then drives forward, bear hugging & smashing down on you? I tried this tonight & that’s exactly what happened. I was then unable to breath & my underhook arm was trapped between us with his weight pushing down on me. Not sure if I was doing the technique incorrect?
@Arcadianx98
@Arcadianx98 2 жыл бұрын
If he’s putting that much weight on you like that then he’s top heavy - try for the bridge sweep since you have one armed trapped

what the hell is the counter to this as the guy on top? How can I get my shoulder free without getting arm dragged?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. It’s really hard to, and these options give good responses to different energies the guy might try. Once that grip is established, it’s a pain to deal with on the receiving end
