When all the people in leadership positions are corrupt and more or less follow the same bullshit code, and when there is no one else for the kids to look up to, kids will look up to the corrupt figures, and think it is an honorable way of life. It is a sad reality not only in former Soviet Republics, but in other countries where corruption rules (Most of S.E Asia, S. America, Mexico and China). You will often hear people in those countries refer to corrupt people in positions of influence as 'smart'. How they reach that absurd conclusion is beyond me, but the REAL smart people in those countries who want to make something of themselves through a creative process and have a positive impact on the society will be cheated in the end by the corrupt people. When corruption rules, you have no choice but to follow, and when you follow, you just reinforce the corrupt system. So, it is understandable that kids at school follow the bullshit code because they must have figured subconsciously that that is the only way to be a 'somebody'. I hope you find a way to leave Kazakhstan and settle in a place where you can find opportunities to make something of yourself, because those countries where corruption rules DO NOT DESERVE to have the REAL smart people working for them.

if you are a non-Russian who wants to watch a realistic Russian crime drama - watch Бумер (2003) there're no, like, big bosses - mostly the life of a "soldiers" on the ground, but the atmosphere, the language, wild and poor post-soviet Russia landscapes - authentic. the official version can be found on youtube, with eng subs (very simplified, but still) - cannot add the link, youtube filters it

@user-hl8ih4cd1m i cannot think of any purely gangster movies, but if you are interested, there's one that is partially and is a very good movie: Как Витька Чеснок Вёз Лёху Штыря в Дом Инвалидов (2017) It has mafia as part of the plot, especially towards the end, and some criminals portrayed psychologically very well, one scene is so real you feel scared - you'll know which one if you watch it. It is available on youtube, unfortunately w/o subtitles, but subtitles can be found online. It should be possible to use them with help of some Chrome extension.

I don't understand why a life of crime would ever be viewed as something as honorable. Stealing, cheating, lying, murdering... all of this is for people who are unsophisticated. Thugs. With so much money and "connections" why don't they go into a legitimate business? I'm sure they'd be successful. And there would not be any trouble with the law. It seems stupid.

Ever heard of the term “honour among thieves” ? Plus you’d be surprised at how often the people on the “right” side of the law, such as police / people who uphold the supposed justice system, partake in the unsophisticated behaviours you mentioned. Namaste.

I am not justifying these "thugs" as you called them. But I might try to explain where this view of this as something as honorable, came from. HISTORY: The thing is, Law and Authorities were many times compromised throughout Russian history. Russia was never a true land of human rights as it is understood in the western democracies and common people were usually a mere resource (that can be wasted largely if needed) for those in power (you can not even imagine how cruel historically Russia was to its people). Those who know Russian history can confirm that there were (comparatively to western countries) too much abuse and cruelty from Russia as a state to its own people. This created some sort of genetic hatred from the Russian population towards the Russian state authorities (not to confuse with Russia as motherland). And it's considered by Russian criminals as self-disrespect to work for/collaborate with authorities/police. SUB-CULTURE: Another thing is is that the Ideology of "Vor v Zakone" ("thief in the Law") was created by NKVD to manage the millions of prisoners (during 1920s) from inside and by authoritative and respected prisoners themselves, but it eventually turned into an autonomous Russian criminal sub-culture with its own ideology and complex system of values (and their own unwritten code of honor "Ponyatiya") that denies any forms of official authorities upon themselves, but not only that is the essence of the code. HUMAN NATURE: And the third thing is human nature. Truly genuine "Vor v zakone" is some sort of a uber-charismatic-Don-Corleone-like Godfather in terms of personal traits, meaning that no ordinary human being can become "Vor v zakone", it takes courage, ability to be just, morality (in their own understanding though) willpower, guts, intellect, and commitment to their code. They are some sort of criminal Daimyos of criminal samurais. But that's what it is believed to be, a fiction, in reality, most of these dudes are low-moral thugs. RESUME: answering your question of why it is viewed as something as honorable, in my opinion, it is some sort of fusion of many "attractive" ideas: an Idea of manly man (but in the criminal world), an Idea of alfa-predator/alfa-male, an idea of honoring a code, an Idea of not serving the authorities (which abused their own people), an Idea of being strong and just to colect rspect of your own criminal community, etc, etc, etc, etc

The Russian government and "legal" authorities are just parts of the greater underworld, especially in the 80's and 90's. Right now, you're a Westerner projecting your view of the world onto a culture and complex society you'll never be able to truly understand, even if you dedicate your life to its study. There is no way of legally running a "legitimate" company in Russia or most Eastern European/former Soviet states without getting involved with the "thugs" as the "thugs" are the government and legal authorities. In summary, the only way for them to get into "legitimate business" is to do what they do. As in our region, it's the only real way to be successful.
