I get a feeling lately that smaller engines like this one are not getting enough love from vw owners. Everybody wants the biggest, the most expensive. It's a shame, really. Smaller engines are great given the weight of bugs, and are oftem more reliable. Thanks for the video, cheers mate!

Well said. It's a mental exercise to keep my 1600 bone stock... it has been bone stock since 1986, and it still is. I sometimes contemplate building a big motor on the side, to swap back and forth. But this original one isn't going anywhere :)
@bugnut825 ай бұрын
Man I agree, I daily drive a 1200 40 horsepower bug and I am an absolute love with this engine. It's fully stock, with the original fat cap distributor that's been restored and also a restored set of thermostat with the flaps. I drive this thing during the 115° heat wave we've been in for the past few weeks and the oil temperature never got any hotter than 218° f. I think the 40 horsepower is the ultimate driver engine.
@powerhausvw5 ай бұрын
It really depends what you are going to do with it, if local driving around town, weekend use and want a quiet engine, I can agree with the 2 comments below but some just like a little more power, individual choice I guess, now if you wanted to drive on the freeway and keep up with traffic today, than you’d need to upgrade the transmission with a taller R&P and or individual gearing which would then require more hp/tq to pull the gear and this is where our aftermarket aluminum engine dual Weber carbureted engines would be required and outlast a stock engine
@bugnut825 ай бұрын
@@powerhausvw oh yeah, we weren't knocking you in any way shape or form. You're a genius engine builder and I love watching your builds. It's just my thing I love driving my 40 horsepower and I live in Bakersfield and go up and down the Grapevine all the time. Of course I could use more power going up the hill because I'm always with a semi trucks and third gear taking my time. But on the flats and around town it keeps up just fine for me, because I generally don't go over 70 even in a modern car. I live in the slow lane no matter what vehicle I'm in.

Aftermarket parts can shoot you in the foot . A autolina case that was manufactured in 1999 the hole where the oil pump fitted in was to big . I took the motor apart 3 times before I got a Mellings cast iron pump . I had to change the studs and while I was doing that , I picked up the pump and slapped it into the case it would rattle around . I could stick a . 015 and a .016 feeler gauge on the sides and it still would go in . So I soldered around the inlet and output holes on the pump then used sand paper to shoe shine it to have some tightness . With out removing the motor it went from 4lbs hot to 45 lbs hot . They have made the holes a little bit tighter in the last couple of years ? but use a T gauge and mic a old VW case and compare it to a new one = all over the place . Somewhere down the line they did not understand that the case has to GRAB the oil pump . It is like taking a SBC and putting a washer between the pump and main cap , oil squirting every where and sucking air .

I couldn't remember when the Autolinea aluminum engine case came out but now that you say 1999, that makes sense because I bought Powerhaus in 1997 and after my first 2 years of line boring, surfacing, case savers & rebuilding the old magnesium cases, I started getting 2-3 engines come back within a year or two with either cracked case, studs pulling, oil pressure problems etc. and this followed my 7 years of working for someone else before owning my own shop and they would also see a bit of come backs as well. Difference was, early on, labor was cheap and finding people to work on VW's was easy so taking care of warranty work wasn't an issue Once I had my own shop and in control of our reputation, I decided to only use new cases and heads which at the time, new magnesium cases were already available but I wanted to try out the new aluminum case which I believe our costs was about $265 back then, anyway yes there were problems from the begining but I liked the idea of aluminum over the mag and while other shops kinda turned their backs on the case, I just figured out and did all the needed repairs in house, this went on for several years without any issues until finally a few of our whole sale wharehouses came to me and asked if I could show them what needed to be done and they went back to Brazil with these fixes and as new runs of the aluminum cases came in from Brazil, improvements were already built into them. It wasn't until years later when we would start seeing individual company logos either stamped or plated on the case as each company would order with specifics to their liking. Currently their is a supply issue with the aluminum cases, they have been trickling in and so far we've been able to stay just a few cases ahead and it looks like the last few cases that we got in about a month or so ago is a brand new casting and so far looks to be really nice.
@jimmywilkinson91902 жыл бұрын
@@powerhausvw Aluminum is the way to go . The trouble of the #1-2 main bearing case clap is a lot better . Its the nature of the beast . as #3 piston rod is coming up it's pushing the opposite side of the case and as it goes into compression stroke the head studs are being pushed outwards = case clap ? With stock cases the bracing is the piston hole thickness . And when they bore them out to put 94s there aint much left ? Keep up the good work ?

Very good details , thank you very much , back in my early 20’s ( early 80’s ) lol there were not too many dome top or good aluminum cases available, from what you have said and other builders have told me , on my 2387 long block to set it up for all the air and fuel I could get . Unfortunately when I do I’m running out of real estate in the engine compartment, with heads and manifolds . Etc. may be the perfect fit for a ghia. Any how thanks for your time and video.

I'm guessing the single 34 PICT is mostly to keep the engine looking stock. Would a bigger single-carb setup on this engine be suitable for daily-driver use?
@powerhausvw Жыл бұрын
We're not a big fan of the single carburetor set up, we only put them on our stock 1600 or a 1776 like this one as long as the heads and cam are stock, as soon as we put bigger cam or valves, we go to the dual double barrel carburetors.

Do you use preheat on the intake for a single carb?
@powerhausvw9 ай бұрын
Not with this exhaust system, it doesn’t have the provisions, we really don’t build many single carb engines because of its design, hence the reason for needing pre heat on the intake

I own a 1970 crew cab. It’s been in my garage for over 20 years. How important is it to remove the fuel tank and get it flushed out? Motor is going to be a 2110 with dual weber 40’s .
@powerhausvw2 жыл бұрын
We suggest that all our customers have their fuel tanks flushed and coated inside. These tanks are steel and can rust, especially with todays fuels and the tank being gravity fed to the fuel pump, small particles can pass through into the carburetor and is one of the main issues with clogging idle jets. I'd also make sure to replace fuel tank screen and run a high micron fuel filter just before the engine to help keep out the smaller particles that will pass right through the typical plastic VW type fuel filters.

@@cyprianskiba8768 they should come with a couple of idle jets to help with the single carburetor flat spot and washers to shim the needle and seat for float height if needed, we are the ones that actually did the testing & jet sizing for Redline a few years ago so you should be a few steps ahead when dialing it in, we're just short staffed right now and super busy building engines so we've been a bit slow on our social media messaging.
