Having to bring multiple types of battery with me to every single shoot became so annoying and tedious, especially since I'm shooting a lot of things all of the time.
Having to remember to charge up each individual battery before and after every shoot becomes very time consuming, so I wanted a simple solution that would alleviate the need for this.
Powering a handheld rig with V-Mount power may seem a little scary to some people, and it was for me to start off with, but now that I've made that transition, i'll never look back.
If you shoot handheld a lot and use an external monitor 100% of the time, then you should definitely consider a setup like this.
I use V-Mount power when shooting video with my Panasonic S5 and Atomos Ninja V all of the time. And now instead of bringing what feels like 1000's of batteries to every shoot, I now only have to bring two for everything, for a whole day of shooting!

These are really good batteries. I bought two of them and have been traveling across multiple countries to film a documentary. I wish the charger was better/faster and not sold separately, but otherwise, it's great.

Yeah V-Mount charging can sometimes take a while, but then again, it's nice only having to bring one charger around with me!

You should consider adding a very affordable steadycam setup for this. Something like the Flycam Redking for around 225USD would fly that whole rig great. It would allow for a smooth push in and pull out, or parallax shot. Then go hand held or on sticks for the rest of your shoot. You have come alongway in the last year. Really enjoyed watching it as I am trying to improve daily myself.

Ah awesome dude - do you have any footage anywhere that you've taken with the steadicam? I did look into getting one a while back but it's just about learning how it'd fit in with the work that I do! Thanks for watching dude, hope you're well :)

@@JoshCameron I don't have a ton of footage online taken with my steadicams, alot of it is buried in long youtube videos. Like I said I have it for just a few b roll shots a video. A push in or pull out establishing shot, or quick timelapse walkthrough. Then shoot the rest on sticks. But I can take my whole BMPCC 4k rig and just pop it on with a manfrotto quick connect. Takes 10 seconds to be up a floating after initial setup. I have a 2 of them, a Flycam Redking and a HD pro glidecam. They do have a learning curve for sure. The only reason I would recommend it for a rig like this is because you wouldn't have to break it down to just pop it on top. They have a flat top unlike a motorized gimbal. Just something to keep in mind. Lately on my wives KZbin channel that we run together I have been doing way to much in studio work. I am bored! Yet appreciative for the work. We are going to be doing more outside b roll and it will all be shot on a rigged out camera on a steadycam. Ordered a gh6 today.... that might have to be what I use. 4k 120!!

I have a question for you, Josh. Would you see ANY problems with powering the S5 with the usb-c port connected to via USB to usb-a on the V-battery?
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 2 жыл бұрын
The USB-C port does provide power, but it's trickle charging and often your camera won't let you operate it when it's charging. You may get a power off message depending on how low the battery is. If you want to use V-Mount power then I'd definitely say a dummy battery is the best option :)

Still using pd power bank for mirrorless rig. 2 NP-F batteries via a converting plate would act as 1 V-mount.

That looks cool! I hate those npf batteries with a passion. Questions: Dummy npf in the monitor I can see. Is it a dummy s5 battery or do you plug this into the usb c charging direct?
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! I use a dummy S5 battery with this rig and that allows me to deliver stepped down power via on of the D-Tap ports on the battery. USB-C on the S5 is just trickle charging I believe, so although I would have preferred to do it that way, it seems like it'd die quicker than it'd charge (and you still need to have a battery inside the camera with that method of course). Hope you're well!

hmm I'm filming a lot on a gimbal and still looking for a good power solution to power everything on my weebill-s. A big np-f battery is sufficient for my camera + monitor, but it's blocking the gimbal arms the way it's attached to the back of the monitor, so I still have to use multiple batterys for everything and swap them. Still not sure if I should try to attach one of these v-mounts to my weebil-s, because it looks big & heavy. But maybe I will give it a try, might be worth if you don't have to worry about power anymore.

Hey Josh, what’s your opinion on the Nitze battery plate, how reliable has it been? Also, does it still produce power if plugged in but the camera is off, any ongoing current and do you just disconnect the dtap cable to shut the powered plate off? Thanks

Hi Josh, interesting option. Curiously when I saw your video and started thinking about this setup I saw Smallrig advertising their lightweight V mount battery line. Have you consider those? Also, I know that I can directly feed my GH6 with USB but I am unclear about the the S5 and the Atomos Shinobi: by looking at your video, you seem to be using dummy battery giving the USB connection: could you be more specific on those ? Many thanks. Ps: I love my S5 and you have always been great source of inspiration….
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 2 жыл бұрын
I have seen those new Smallrig ones! They look great as well. I'm sure both options will do the same job, but of course the display on the Smallrig ones may be something that end users would like. I wouldn't power the S5 via the USB-C as it's more of a trickle charge and sometimes the camera can get a bit funny about you powering through USB-C, especially if the battery is less than 40% charged. I would be inclined to use a dummy battery to D-Tap because that way the V-Mount power is being supplied directly to the battery port. Thanks for the kind words! Really glad you find this channel helpful :)
