John describes Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) as a blinding alarm that, depending on what it latches on to, can drown out the chances at a normal life. Although he longed for connection, John preferred to be by himself growing up finding that people caused his disorder to flare. Then, in high school, a gym teacher introduced him to powerlifting and everything changed.
A tangled interplay of genetic, biological, personality and environmental factors causes mental illnesses. This growing epidemic will directly or indirectly affect every Canadian at some point in their lives. MOVE brings us inside the life of Canadians across ages, genders, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds living with mental illnesses who have found ways to “self-medicate” and find some light through the discovery of exercise and human movement.
In MOVE, EPISODE 5, John finds strength by focusing his obsessive-compulsive disorder on powerlifting.

Great video. I’ve been dealing with OCD for as long as I can remember (29 years old.) It has since put me into a depression and I have been debating taking Zoloft. I’m going to hold off on the medication and start lifting instead. Thankyou for the inspiration.

Good luck! Remember as well that needing medication is not a failure either. We are all different and need to find what works.
