Morph Transition Effect in PowerPoint - Smoky Text

Weirdly cool smoky text animation effect in PowerPoint! I discovered this by accident when playing with the Morph transition. I'm not even sure that Microsoft meant for this to even be an option - so hope you enjoy!

Hi spice, Nothing apart from the common morph seemed to work (with me), including the smoky text. Perhaps it's me or the system i'm using and yes, I did choose text on the effect options. I'm not complaining. I thought that the video was very interesting and that you're a great teacher. So thanks for taking the time to upload the video.

Hi Joseph - hmmm I have just tried my original video file with this and it all still works so the good news is that Microsoft hasn’t changed anything else that would make it not work. Please note that the text is not actually text but shapes in the form of text. If you have a word in a text box (like what I did with “power” and “point”, you need to stamp the words out first by using “merge shapes” - that way, each letter is a shape vs text. I hope that further helps. Like I said it’s good that it’s still possible with the program to get this effect in 365.

Really great stuff. It took me some time to figure out what exactly does the trick. Finally found it: you've got to edit points. Simply placing an object is not enough. As soon as you edit one of the points, it morphs. Real magic. On other sites it's said that you can't change an object in a morph but you teach us how ;-) Keep up the good work. Love it!

Thanks, Frans! Yes, you have to change the points in some way. That's why a simple inserted rectangle won't work BUT as soon as you use a rectangle that's made manually through Merge Shapes it works. Very odd, right?! I felt like a mad scientist when I discovered this - I knew i was onto something but had to do tons of experimentation to make a few "rules" that would make it work consistently.

Thanks for the comment, Taffy! Yes, it is really tricky to get your image to work properly - try to scan it carefully to make sure it fits the "criteria" outlined in the video. It took me a ton of tries to get it to work right.

Thanks so much, AJ, and great to hear from you! You have to have PPT 2016 but the 365 subscription version. It's a bit annoying but i personally switched over just for that reason. All the coolest stuff is there, and there is a free trial in most countries (US is linked in the description). (By the way, this response was not posting properly for some reason so I tried with multiple accounts - but looks like it's working now.)

Can you make a tutorial on how to make the letters smaller, and make something appear on the same slide please?

To make letters smaller, just make them smaller on the next slide and put a morph transition between the 2 slides. Because Morph is a transition, you can't really use this effect on the same slide - you need to duplicate the slide and change what's on the duplicated slide to make it LOOK like it's all on one slide. But morph by definition needs to be used across slides.

Hi Golmah - thanks for the question, and glad you liked the video. You know what? Microsoft has actually (I'm hoping temporarily!) stopped EPS support even on PCs - due to a security issue. Therefore, the only way I can personally do it is on my work computer that has an outdated version of 2013. My first suggestion (which is not ideal, I know!) is to see if someone you know has an outdated 2013 version. That way, you can ungroup the EPS file there and then use it on your Mac. If that's not possible, then you can still try this trick on vectorized letters. Hopefully at least that will work on your Mac. Good luck!

Hi, PowerPoint Spice... Have you ever tried this morph effect vectorizing an image-with-transparent-background by tracing it with a free form (closed curve) and then filling the free form with that traced image...?

Yes, that actually works in many cases! In fact, you can morph faces / objects into each other that don't look like vectors - even crazier! I'm actually doing a demo of that in an upcoming conference presentation this year - great job realizing that it could be possible!

Which version of MS Office are you using? Our school has MS Office 365 free for the students and teachers. However, our version does not have the feature, Drawing Tools, Format, Insert Shapes group, Edit Shapes, Text Box, Merge Shapes, Union, Combine, Fragment etc.?

Microsoft removed EPS support from powerpoint but convert your vector image to an emf (use cloud convert.com) and ungroup - works the same way.

Hi Powell - you can use the free service cloudconvert to convert EPS into EMF and then ungroup those in the same way. You can also use a free vector program like Inkscape, but cloudconvert is the easiest. By the way, check out my related effect to this video the "weird morph trick," as it shows you how to do this smoky effect with photos (and demonstrates cloudconvert as well). Great! Glad the first 2 worked at least - and yes, the third way is the hardest because you have to make sure both the text and picture are fully connected and don't have the closed areas. This means make sure there are no parts of the word or picture you're trying to morph that are closed or surrounded fully by something - so for example, an "O" would be closed. A capital E would be fully open. In my case, I had 2 closed areas on the small e's so I had to open them up for the trick to work. Examine your 2 slides carefully because the closed areas are not always obvious.

that very likely means you have closed areas somewhere. OR perhaps your picture is not one layer? is it also a vector and all the same color?

Can you google "free trial" of Microsoft Office in your language? They have it in the US and in many other countries. It does come as a bundle though - so you have to get all the other programs with PPT (unfortunately). The good news is that the subscription is not that much per month, so even if you don't have a free trial in your country you can sign up for a month then cancel if you don't like it.
