I just got a bull calf, about 2 months I’m told, got the equipment listed. Really grateful to you, as I am not an expert, just the one bull as a pet

Hi, I'm 14 and me and my family have been thinking about getting a bottle calf soon. My dad has a lot of experience with cows, but I've never had one before. Thank you for making videos like these. If you have any tips please comment below. Thank y'all so much!

@@PowersFamilyFarm what do I need to give to my calf for the scours
@Jcislrd72 күн бұрын
The guy that sold us our bottle calves said its ok to give em store bought pasteurized milk from Walmart
@justforfun4623 Жыл бұрын
Gotta watch buying from some private sellers also, I bought two calf's off of a guy in Port Royal pa back in spring and he told me calves was healthy blah blah, well he got here and was unloading them and noticed they had scours, he said they must have just got it, well they died two days later even with vet intervention. They had scours longer than what they was here.

I would add lime and fly spray for screw worms to that list. Trust me, you don't want fly strike.

I’m 14 and I want to buy 20 bottle calves this summer the only place I really know I can get them is from our local sales barn is there anything I should treat them with before they walk into our barn on our farm
@PowersFamilyFarm3 жыл бұрын
Thats ambitious, my hat goes off to you. First and foremost quarantine them away from any other animals you have on your farm. I would then hit them with an antibiotic such as penicillin or something stronger from the vet. Follow that with BO-SE 1 ML and A&E 1 ML for 2 days or so. Give them the best chance. Try to get the oldest calves you can at the sales barn and be very picky or you might have a rough bunch and get discouraged. Feel free to reach out anytime with questions and good luck! - DJ
@prairiecreekfarm9223 жыл бұрын
@@PowersFamilyFarm how many ML of Penicillin should I give each calf? These bottle caves will also be in a separate barn from any other animal. Also where would I be able to buy the A&E
@PowersFamilyFarm3 жыл бұрын
I do 1 ml straight down the throat. A&E can be bought at TSC or your local feed store or online. BO-SE is from your vet
@Noah-vd7yl4 ай бұрын
Also if your buying from an auction make sure to quarantine for a bare minimum of 2 weeks. Also if the navel isn't tied do so and spray with iodine. Iodine is cheap, (about 7 dollars for 16 oz) and it will prevent bacteria from entering the navel. Also make damn sure that they are in the dryest place possible.
@Noah-vd7yl4 ай бұрын
For medication the video covered the best ones but if you want to go the extra mile I've heard that the bova shield is good. And keeping Bo-Se on hand is also good in case it needs selenium. Also if the calf is really young make sure it has colossustrum (bonus points if you don't buy the powder and find someone willing to sell the colossustrum milk directly)

Do you tend to administer vitamin b complex regardless? Or only in certain situations?

Hello Kasey, I give Vit B regardless. Part of my routine when bringing calves back from the auction. Thank you for commenting. All the best - DJ ( because I’ve been told I need to put this here, always consult a vet because I am not)

Hi I’m front Trinidad I watch your channel a lot, I bought 3 calves 1 is very skinny and defused to drink milk, he picks on feed but is trouble to get him to take the milk at times, is there any substitute for that? Thank you in advance
@PowersFamilyFarm4 жыл бұрын
Asha, if the calf refuses to take a bottle you have a few options. Wait a day and let the calf get good and hungry, if it's already super skinny this might not be a good option, option 2 which I would do, is tube the calf. Don't give him the option to not eat. Hope this helps. All the best - DJ

WHY ARE THEY NOT WITH THEIR MOMS?

Some moms reject their calves for many different reasons. Some moms don't know what they are doing and will not be able to care for the babies. That's when humans come in. Thanks

@@PowersFamilyFarm your still doing a great job. I'm just not the type to go that route. How did we farm for generations successfully?
@PowersFamilyFarm3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t take offense. I tried to go strictly organic remedies at the start. Problem was I really started getting into bottle calves late fall early winter and all the natural remedies weren’t “keeping up”. My thoughts when I made this video are for the first timers. Once you understand the animals and have experience and can identify symptoms early and have a great bio security plan I would 100% agree “organic” or natural farming methods are best. Just ask my goats. All the best - DJ
