I know you must get tired of hearing this, Troy, but that was freaking awesome. When I was growing up Harris was up there in my top 5 or so bass gods along with Geddy. And I still have my vinyl copy of Powerslave; played for a guitarist buddy just the other night. I was a "casual" Maiden fan and I thought this is their best and most complete album. And light touch or not, I swear you can hear the bass strings clanking the frets all through this album, part of the Steve Harris sound.
@TJH31139 жыл бұрын
+Helium Road Thanks a lot. I was fond of the album when it came out as well but always struggled with playing his parts. All that string clack is what made me think he was really whacking the bass but then I read in a interview that the plays lightly and has the bass set up with the action very low. Makes sense now.
@gplayahead80999 жыл бұрын
+Helium Road The attack in his right hand is monsterous! Steve blew our minds from Killers thru Powerslave. Then I got off the ride. Harris is on all rock players lists as an influence for sure

+TJH3113 he uses flatrounds as well..so crazy man!
@gtate1355 жыл бұрын
Yeah he uses rotosound flat strings, I could never get use to them, felt like my fingers stuck to the strings. But I got the Harris slap sound by beating the shit out of it with my right hand. Occasionally I would break strings. One thing I noticed is I lost feel for the non metal songs and still banged hard on bass, couldn’t play without the clacking. For me a blessing and a curse. Love Steve H. And the rest of maiden, nice job on covering this

I'm with you Troy. I was never much of a metal guy, but Iron Maiden is one of the only metal bands that I've really liked and I think it's because I'm a big prog rock fan and they have a more complex and rich sound when compared to other metal acts. No offense to other metal acts. Great job on this one Troy! One of my personal favorite Iron Maiden songs.
@TJH3113 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was probably the hint of prog, along with the horror imagery that caught my interest. Steve's a bit too much for me to handle in terms of endurance though, so I don't play much Maiden. Thanks and take care!

Nice job Troy! Shame about the tuning.....Annoyingly, Maiden tuning seems to vary song to song and album to album on these older pieces.....the joys of analogue tape ;) Considering this is clearly out of your comfort zone hats off for uploading this! Btw, you must have been unlucky at your Maiden gig, I've never had trouble in over 30 years of shows.....perhaps watch Live After Death dvd from this era, you might appreciate it, who knows ;) And a BIG thanks for the heads up to my channel, I've got the 2nd half of Piece of Mind on my pc that I keep on meaning to re do, so hopefully this will get my backside in gear lol

Excellent! Steve Harris is no slouch on a 4 string, and you nailed it! 👍🏻 Another bassist i really admire is Roger Glover - straight forward bluesy/rock bassist, no frills or showing off, just gets the job done. I've been watching your videos for a long time now and I've been waiting to see what would make you pause a bit and have to think about your technique and what might actually wear you out. Of course it was Steve Harris. Geddy Lee and Chris Squire are workouts, Steve Harris is a widowmaker as far as stamina. You did a damn good job man and I even discovered something in there I had never noticed and I've been listening to this album religiously since it came out in 1984! Well done sir.
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Exactly right about Steve Harris being an endurance test. I don't know how he does it. I've read that, despite what it sounds like, he actually plays with a very light touch. That would probably help as I've done that with a few quick tunes; "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" comes to mind, but it doesn't come naturally to me. Thanks for the great comment and take care!

@MarbsMusic3 жыл бұрын
Somehow I missed this one when you did it! I think it's great and Maiden has been my favorite group since around 1980. Harris is indeed a beast, he also uses 50-150 flats most of the time. You are also correct, the remaster is a little off key as well if you are tuned properly. My main guitar warm up is 4 or 5 songs off Powerslave and the tuning is very apparent (this seems to have been fixed on Apple Music and Spotify in 2021). While I have worked hard to become a bassist over the last 9 years or so - still coming along, I completely understand the notes on speed. I try to do Animate using Geddy's flamenco and rarely make it unless I've been playing a lot more bass than guitar for a few months. The few Maiden songs I do play on bass I try to pick the slow ones ;) You can play pretty much any Steely Dan or Rush song so IMHO you never need to apologies on anything, always in awe of your ear and skill Troy!
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marb. I knew he used flats, but didn't know about the steel cables. I do know that he plays with an extremely light touch, even though it sounds like he's beating the crap out of his bass. I've only heard the live recording from the powerslave tour and I always assumed the mediocre sound was from them having done such a long tour and the recording being towards the end. it always seems they have terrible timing when recording shows. but anyways I enjoyed your playing of this song. the "poor man's" picking style is actually pretty cool.

You truly are an inspiration to my own bass endeavors. With covers like Powerslave, War Pigs, Burnin' For You, and Classics I haven't even heard of, you prove that the impossible can be played. For reference, I'm in High School, and your playing brings music back from the dead and into the hands of teenagers born after 2000. I'm trying to learn this bass line myself and I'm astounded that you even got as far as the second verse before using a pick cause WOW my hands hurt. Bravo. Thank you so much! I'm sure you will! If you like playing Iron Maiden you'll need to work on speed and endurance. You'll do it if you invest the time into getting there.

Well done, I really like it.. But I have a question for you.. You are covering a lot of great bass players, I am just curious to undertand which one you like more and which one is the most difficult one to cover..? Ciao and happy 2017
