Living in South Florida myself, I had two OEM fan clutches wear out or begin to become weak on me in about 50k miles. After the second replacement I decided to try out the old viscous clutch. I will say, there is more fan noise and a slight decrease in fuel economy as you mentioned. However, my older AC system stays much cooler in slower stop and go traffic in the summer and I never have to worry if it's working correctly since my coolant temperatures rarely gets much over 190F now. For me AC benefits and peace of mind outweighs the increased fuel consumption and noise.

I’ve had the 7.3 fan clutch in my ‘06 F250 6.0 for about two years now, I held on to my stock electric clutch. I will be switching back to the electric clutch here in a few days. Yes the mechanical 7.3 clutch works fine, but it is in fact as Bill states, WAY noisier. And it has negatively affected my MPG. And I did not notice a huge difference in coolant temps when towing. So back to stock I go.

I run the 7.3 fan clutch on my 05 F350. I also run the bullet proof air to oil cooler and I live in South West Idaho where it is HOT in the summer and I tow a heavy toy hauler. I could not get my oil temps to come down at all until I put the 7.3 style fan clutch on. I did not notice any power or fuel milage decrease and have been running this set up for 3 years. It is a bit louder and you can hear that it moves a lot more air though then the stock style. I highly recommend this set up especially if you live in a hot area and are doing any kind of towing.
@richardjwickberg85832 жыл бұрын
I had installed a fan clutch like that I got from Bulletproof diesel. Really kept the temperatures down during towing to the point where they did not increase at all no matter what. Problem was that sucker was loud and going down the parkway listening to the fan roar was beyond obnoxious. I sent my truck to Bill for dealerproofing and had them put a factory fan clutch back on. If you live in the desert and tow hard or in the city idling a lot I think Bill is spot on and this is a good setup but other then the factory one is the right choice.
@antonioaa80972 жыл бұрын
I own a 2006 f250 and made the conversion, the electric fan clutch failed so made the conversion then and it does keeps the engine temp much cooler in hot days and when towing. The coolant temp stays around 194 degrees and before was running around 202 degrees. Yes, I did notice the fan noise a lot more on low speed but high speed is not noticeable but fuel wise din't notice much difference. Like Bill said, if you do heavy towing or live in hot areas this conversion is highly recommended.

Great video. One third option that was missed for better cooling and no computer problem is the optional Motorcraft "snow plow" electric fan clutch. It bolts in and looks identical to the OEM ones, but will have additional turning restrictions on the clutch, to spin the fan faster at lower rpm for better airflow while not setting any soft codes in the ecm. There also is one or two other functions the ecm wants to see the fan clutch plugged in for, which are compromised when it's 7.3 clutch swapped. Also, BPD offers a wiring harness shield for the OEM clutch to surround the wiring and protect it better from fan contact fwiw.

A key part of this conversation is the "blue wire mod". This allows you to keep the electronically controlled fan clutch, but wire it to a switch. Sort of a best of both worlds. With the switch off, it behaves as normal. With the switch on, it fakes the signal from the computer to force the clutch to engage. I am in Las Vegas, and I have found that this allows me to run cooler Temps at the expense of fuel economy. I use it 100% whenever towing, as it allows me to preemptively pull heat out of the system *before* I get to that mountain in 10mi. I use it in the summer to superpower my A/C until the cabin gets down to a tolerable temperature. I would love to see a follow up video to this one covering the blue wire mod.

At high rpm, with the clutch locked up, they take near 80hp to turn the fan alone.. I can't remember the CFM at full tilt, but it's an incredible amount. I learned this from one of my teachers when I was in training for Ford motor company.

Had one on my 03 for about 3 years now. AC works better and on those hot days in Alabama while towing she locks in at 215 degrees and cools down real quick. Didn't notice any change in my fuel mileage. No more noise until it fully locks in and it won't stay locked in for long. No regrets at all on mine. I consider it one of the better upgrades I've done.

We had our electric clutch give out while towing our camper. Replaced with the mechanical clutch. Noticed the temps stayed cooler and far more consistent. The temps towing were also way more steady. ECT never got over 210 and it was 100 degrees out. Never noticed a drop in MPG. It was noisier, but I kinda like the noise.

We put the factory Ford snow plow heavy duty fan clutch on it definitely engages a lot more often, we also ran the blue wire mod which effectively grounds out the signal wire so you can command the fan on if you're doing heavy towing or going to go up a long grade and get ahead of the engine oil temp or coolant Temps
@tylerfida57742 жыл бұрын
I have been running the bpd setup for about 4 years now and it really helps keep Temps down on long grades with a heavy tow. with the oem fan, was seeing 215 to 220 ect and up to 230 eot when towing long highway grades. with this set up the highest ect and eot I have seen is 208 and 220 respectively. everything else on my cooling system is 100% stock.

So I installed one of these bullet proof diesel fun clutches in my 2006 PSD about 5 years ago. I installed it because in my experience, the original, electric fan clutch would not fully lock up for max fan speed until the engine coolant temperature was approximately 205-210 degrees. The non-electric fan clutch would begin to increase fan speed around 195 degrees and was full speed around 200 degrees. It did lower my fuel mileage some, but definitely improved A/C performance in traffic or low speed conditions. The main driver for me was I towed heavy trailers in the NC and TN mountains, previously, my coolant temps would go high quicker and I would need to back off because there was already too much heat built up in the coolant. The non-electric clutch worked much better for me and never ran hot. I have a trouble code with no check engine light. My truck also has an OEM radiator. If you tow heavy loads through hills in a warm climate I would recommend. Note you need a special tool to remove/install the fan clutch and you reuse the OEM fan blades.

I run the 7.3 fan clutch in my 04. Still have the factory setup in our 03. Prior to install in the 04, oil temps of 225-230 towing in hot weather. 215-220 for ect under load. After this install, I’m at 208 ect and 218 eot with 13k pounds behind me. Our 03 pulls that same load (our fifth wheel) with the higher temps that our 04 once yielded. The fan is louder especially at startup but you don’t hear it going down the road or at idle. I have not experienced a drop in mpg that’s noticeable although it is possible. My goal is to keep oil temp under 220 when towing in hot FL weather. I use good quality oil but don’t want it to oxidize prematurely. No CEL But there is a p0528 that’s always there when I run Forscan to check DTC’s. I used a FORD Motorcraft 7.3 fan clutch for a 1997 model year. Lastly, I did realize cooler AC vent temps as this fan seems to move more air across the stack. I did not really expect that. Hope this helps.

About a year ago my electric fan clutch was getting noisy and loose. I tow heavy and replaced it with that exact bullet proof setup. It was so loud having the fan "run" the whole time. It got annoying fast and after a few camping trips with it, I went back to an electric fan clutch and couldn't be happier. 99.9% of the time I go with Ford OEM parts but I tried the OhOhOh electric fan clutch. It's supposed to come on at a lower temp than the Ford one. I also installed a cooler thermostat and did a VC9 chemical flush and switched to red coolant. Best decision I made.

@Garth20112 жыл бұрын
Those computer controlled clutches do have more cooling options vs. the thermostatic clutch does. The old school clutch will be engaged with cold start ups or when sitting off a few hours as the fluid inside settles to the bottom of the diameter, thats a normal operation. Once the engine has been running a few minutes that clutch will disengage and the fan will "fee spin" up until hot air causes that bi-metal spring to move the valve. So, for most operational time periods, the fan will not spin. With the electronic version, the computer will have more choices to engage the clutch such as when the A/C is turned on, the fan will likely engage some to help draw in air across the condenser, even at idle. The other clutch will not do that unless the radiator temps rise so the A/C cooling will not be as good with the old school clutch during idle and city traffic unless the temperatures are high enough to make that spring move. It's a close call which is better overall but the computer controlled version will perform much better in city driving vs the old school when it comes to cooling the condenser and other coolers.

Those 7.3 fan clutches work great on my LCFs, but I must have gotten a bad one on my 2005 6.0, it wouldn't keep my AC condenser cool enough at idle. My high side pressure would spike and set off the pop off valve on the AC compressor. I put a new motorcraft computer controlled clutch back on and the AC worked fine again. With the computer controlled fan clutch, you can sit there and watch it kick the fan on harder when the high side pressure start to creep up.

All OEM fomoco parts were about $1400. I have an 02 7.3 that has been upgraded and tuned etc etc His 07 6.0 is %100 stock besides some minor upgrades (blue spring, trans pan etc) One thing I’ve realized is that Ford and Navistar put milllllllions of dollars into R&D for these trucks and for the most part I stick with OEM FOMOCO parts ESPECIALLY with the 6.0 liter truck.

Once those are deleted, the motor is studded and the cooling system is flushed and swapped to an EC1 rated ELC these trucks are just as reliable as any 7.3, and far more impressive performance wise. I've owned two obs 7.3s, an 01, a 12v and a 24v; I still own the 12v, but my 6.0 has been the most reliable by far and it has all of the modern comforts. I hate trying to fight heat in an auto. I want any advantage I can have; oversized radiator, lower thermostat (180 vs 195), fan hub vs fan clutch. However with all that being said the engine needs to be warmed up to properly burn the fuel. Ford spends alot of money on research and development so that is something to consider. Old parts don't work as well as new parts radiators plug up on the inside, fan clutches get weak, engine cooling passages plug up, and probably the most overlooked over heating cause is a plugged up catalytic converter. My advice would be 1. make sure you trust your temperature gauge ( there is a big difference between 220 degrees f and 240). 2. Maintain your rig, if you need the big radiator get it. ( there is a big difference between a hot shot truck in Texas and a grocery getter in Canada, what works for me might not work for you.

Yeah I messed up and put a heavy duty clutch fan on my 351w F250 instead of the standard. It literally felt like I lost 3-4 cylinders until it disengages. This is the only thing I disagree with Bill about. I have better performance with the bulletproof clutch, especially as it pertains to towing temps and AC performance at idle. I can't tell the difference in fuel economy although I'm sure there is a miniscule loss. The coolant temps stay about 5 to 10 degrees cooler with the old style that translates to lower oil temps. I save money, worry and sweat with the older units. Also in Utah and Nevada the electric clutches seem to go out about every 75,000 miles and it is twice the cost of the old model.

In California full emissions hooked up 2003 6.0. I run stock turbo, full BPD systems for EGR cooler, billet water pump, oil cooler air to oil, Mishimoto radiator, old school 7.3 Power Stroke 1997 manual Clutch fan unit, ARP head studs with non oringed new thicker heads not rebuilt. SCT old tuner because I like the Street Tune for fuel economy and the 55hp tune for my heavy towing depending on how heavy. I installed the BPD 6 phase power supply FICM and clipped the wires to be at 53 volts. I have the billet plug for the egr and my old SCT tuner turns off the engine light for that. It just pops out and you put in the egr valve for smogging purposes here in Comyfornia. Do I run smog? Yes/no depending on who's asking. If I have all unplugged/bolted it takes only 40 minutes to have cat,egr, CCV and stock tune for the Gustopo moments. I had all the mods done between 100,000 and 120,000 miles. My set up is now at 190,000 miles. I rarely jump in to just go do non hauling crap. It is almost exclusivity used for hauling and most of the tome it hauls my 40 foot 16,000 Lbs 5th wheel in Western United States. The rest of my hauling is a car trailer with a Rock Crawler rig around the 7,000 Lbs mark. I am one of those early Summer till mid Fall traveler haulers and do pull the big mountain 6% or more grades during 95f to 110f temps blasting the AC all the way. Some grades are several miles at a pull. I have gotten as high as 245f oil temps and 230f coolant temps. I run 2500 RPM max and adjust down depending on my comfort zone. So far no pull over to cool downs have been needed. The temps drop real quick on the down hill or level out side. I do run my stock tune for towing the 5th wheel during the very hot temps. The old Computer fan would kick on at too high of a temp that I felt was close to a disaster if I didn't catch a fail immediately. The Manual fan works much harder sooner at keeping the temps more controlled longer before max temp runs. In my opinion the manual fan clutch is a must in hot climate towing for the 6.0 to have longevity. An electric over ride switch for the electrical fan clutches are nice too. But when you are going slow or stopped, having the ice cold constant AC on with the old school can't be beat. Unless you want to sit fully locked on with an override switch. The manual just takes all the cooling concern of it away. Just go.

Or also I’ve watched videos on guys hooking up an auxiliary switch to the high idle circuit for mostly warming up quicker in the cold mornings but could this be switched on while in traffic to help the fan “kick in” more so the a/c blows colder? And finally some are talking about a “snow plow package” fan clutch that works better as well, which could be interesting to find out more about. Either way your videos are informative and entertaining, thank you.

The problem I had was the company that flashed my computer put the wrong vin in and my truck would not engage the fan at the correct time and would though a code for the egr being plugged every few thousand miles.. It was cheaper to do the conversion and a little piece of mind because it would over heat very fast wile towing. If ford did not want $350 to $450 to do a flash on my computer i would have stayed with the stock fan.. need less to say I have bin running this set up for a few years and have had no problems with over heating wile towing my over weight camper up some of the large passes in California.

Hey Bill got one for ya need to fix my truck been sitting a few months due to high diesel cost. It's got blown head gaskets and I drove it a while because I had no choice earlier this year. I have been working out of my Ranger luckily to stay in business as I use my truck for work. I met you in Covington LA a few years ago when you were passing through and at the time the truck had some minor repairs I did around 200k miles on it. I have since gotten to 310k and have had to replace the Turbo last year as it had oil blow by and tried to runaway at a stoplight in town. I'm thinking the high rev for a few seconds or the oil in cylinders my have contributed to blowing the head gaskets? Have all the parts needed from BPD just need to get in there and pull the heads. I have been in the engine a few times over the years just not this far but pretty confident I can handle it unless I run into a showstopper issue. I have a link to a video of it cranking and of the coolant bottle. Thanks for Everything your still doing for the Ford Diesel Community, Casey kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZfJfauJi9KGo8U

Yeah you'll mess up your ac if the bad fan clutch isn't caught in time.

I'd rather covert to a full electric setup than down grade to a fan from the 70s. Both types of fan clutch fail as do electric motors so it's a toss up. Electric will give yoy the best power and AC temperature you might need a Stronger alternator to run it though.

That cheap radiator wasn't helping him, fan clutch ! Personal preference.

"dumb after market chinese dog shit" = What GM put on the trailblazer 02 - 05 stock. It was so bad that in the last 2 years of the trailblazers existance they reverted to a thermostatic clutch and no electtrical non-sense.
