+Anthony O'Dell I agree with you 100%. I've been watching him for hints, tips and advise for a few years. I've been a mechanic in a Govt garage for 14 yrs and we use very few diesel Fords because the fuel economy isn't enough to justify the expense of the diesel upgrade, nor even the much more expensive maint and upkeep. I myself bought a new F350 in February and went with a Gas engine. It's not too slouchy with a 11000# fifth wheel.

absolutely Anthony. im glad someone finally said the right thing for this man. i have been through hell with mechanics in this town. most are blowing smoke and making more of the problem to soak you more and never finish up the job with any class or with the intention of doing the best for you and your vehicle. scam artists in a legalized ripoff . very few honest men in the repair industry or sales.

7.3 99-03 is hands down the best Powerstroke. Can't kill them, easy to maintain, relatively cheaper parts now (except IDI). I got rid of all the other diesels from our ambulance fleet and only run the 7.3's and the 6.8 gas engines. Also those older bodies sure hold up far better too.

Those 444s had weak bottom end power for such a big engine, no low end torque and were hard starting in the cold ,if everything was 100 percent they might fire at 10 degrees they might not that is after cycling glow plugs and waiting, you can hop in a DT466s and instantly turn the key and it jumps to life in 2 revolutions in the same temps...

Great video man. I love my 96 7.3 though, never had any wiring issues in 300k mi. I'm thinking that's a rarity. As for power, I don't tow much so reliability is much more important. And as for ride quality and "creature comforts", I don't buy a truck for comfort, I buy it for work. That range 7.3 engine is awesome but the transmission is the worst ford made for diesels until rebuilt with the upgraded steel parts (if you upgrade it before it fails you might save the increasingly hard to source casing.) But I agree 7.3 is longest life diesel Ford ever made (probably because they realized that they weren't breaking and people wouldn't be buying expensive parts or a new truck often enough to keep them rich) thus the 6.0 with it's tiny passage water-to-oil cooler in front of what is essentially a designed-to-fail coolant destroyer (EGR COOLER boils off coolant if left just 1/2 gallon low) [which is *intentionally or not" designed into it by the coolant flow path through the easily restricted oil cooler leaving an air bubble in the EGR cooler unless air is bled out properly every time coolant is more than a quart or so below spec]

HI Bill, I own a 97 F-250 7.3 Crew cab 4x4 that I bought used in 2000, she had 50000 miles on her. I have done extensive work to her, Banks Power Pak, which included an intercooler, turbo housing and a chip. I added an S&B air intake and I made the 5' exhaust from the down pipe back. With all the mods I'm pushing around 320hp and 680fp torque. I put a Dana 60 up front and a North American Diesel Products bulletproof tranny in her as well after the stock one took a dump on me at 75K. I also lifted her about 8", I rarely take her off-road except for hunting season, I wanted a bit more ground clearance and to be able to put chains on her if needed. At one time I owned a 40 Raptor toy hauler and bought a new 06 6.0L F-350 to haul it around, that was the biggest mistake of my life. At 3300 miles the rear mail seal started leaking, and there would be a 10" puddle under it every morning. Long story short, I took it in 4 times that year for rear main seals and with 12000 miles I traded it off. I started pulling the Raptor with my 97 and to my surprise it pulled better then the 6.0L did. I was looking recently into buying a new 6.7 but the price almost floored me. For the money that I'd spend on a new one, I can do some serious upgrades to my old 97. And besides that I can work on my 97, I can't say the same of the new trucks, and I don't have to pull the cab to get the motor out. Sure she's loud and rides a little rough and it's hard to keep her going in a strait line, but she's a TRUCK, not a passenger car. I wouldn't trade or sell her for anything. I've invested a lot of time and money in her over the years, but as I've said before, she's easy to work on and the parts are cheap.

its a high power to weight ratio poppet valved 2 stroke, it burns oil like a detroit 8v92 2 stroke aor rotax 670? turbo injects oil into these 7.3 as they are 2 strokes poppet valved??? Rotax power to weight ratio poppet vallved 2 stroke?
@bradzumbro77174 жыл бұрын
@@jlo13800 what are you talking about? The 7.3 is not a 2 stroke. It doesn't inject oil as long as everything is in good shape. No relation to a rotax at all

WOW!...Honest and to the point. I have an early 99 7.3 4x4 and love it. I've owned for the last 12 years. I'm a retired mechanic and have been a stickler for maintenance. Several upgrades and mods, but no tuner or chip. My truck now is pushing 335,000 miles. Still averaging about 19 mpg. I tow and haul with mine and have yet to replace a transmission, Still is the original. I use Blackstone Labs for oil analysis and Mobil 1 for all oils but the engine oil. Delo 15/40 there.. Bill, keep up with the videos, I have found them useful.

I have the same one as you but it’s a dually. Mine rides really rough like he said in the video. Do you know of any after market suspensions that help it ride better? I hit a small bump in the road and it feels like I fell through the center of earth lol

As a former ford tech I think the last of the 6.0s were the best. Easy to fix, easy to diagnose and parts were more affordable then the later models. The tourqe shift trans was also better then the 7.3s

Mike L I don’t comment much but Im happy for you and I wanted to add that I bought my 05’ 6.0 about 2 months ago and I love it...as this was always my dream truck and these are amazing trucks along with proper maintenance and blah,blah blah! I guess what I’m trying to say is that these trucks need a few problems addressed (bulletproofed) I also have and egr delete in this engine and I have ARP studs that I will be installing “ one at a time” instead of spending thousands of dollars taking the cab and heads off but I also have no head gasket issues...I have 254k on this engine and it is a beast and it was a single owner before I bought it. Also the truck has never been tuned and I know it hasn’t been beat on to much lol. Good luck and enjoy your truck💪

I know this comment is 3 years old, but Duramax isn't much better. I've seen plenty of them with issues too. It seems like modern diesel engines are about the same across the board--power, reliability, and cost.

I have a 08 With the 6.4 Have had no problems but I also maintain this truck to the hilt. Both fuel filters every other oil change and no after market filters. I have seen more injector problems and pump from other people that use Napa or another brands they are not made the same or the exact size that needs to seal against air infiltration. Same goes with the air filter.

The best Ford diesels to get are the 6.9 and 7.3 IDIs. Don't confuse the 7.3 IDI (1994 and earlier.) with the 7.3 PS (1994.5 and later.) Two totally different animals. The IDI offers good fuel economy, power (when in tune), run forever, easy and cheap to fix and absolutely zero computer control.

+ShysterLawyer i agree i got 2 1994`s idi`s as farm trucks one with 326,+ miles k code and one with 228,+ miles m code both trucks have been great assets easy to maintain and parts are relatively cheep the ride is not the best but they are work trucks and i am not afraid to take them on a cross country trip the 6.9`s and 7.3`s idi,s are the best ford/international motors money can buy 500k motors with basic maintenance the new stuff is a big let down

+ShysterLawyer Power? Out of an IDI??? LMFAO, Those things are ancestors to dinosaurs. Yes, maybe they have their place in a post-apocalyptic zombie wasteland where you can't find electronics and have to machine your own replacement parts... Or back in the 80s where they came from.
