i think pickleball singles will go the route of tennis---baseline play so ridiculous to approach immediately, just to "get to kitchen"...can't approach unless your opponent is in trouble out of position...

It depends on a few things, like reach, but if you return the ball to middle, even back middle then you are toast if you go to the kitchen. If you put it down the line on either side, then you can get to the kitchen and cut off some angles.
