CJ going away from the aggressive style that had success in the earlier rounds was head scratching. To not change tactics when things were going sideways and at least go back to what had worked earlier in the tournament was again head scratching. Where was his aggressive serve, where was his third shot drives? Sitting back and waiting for an aggressive team to spead up on you is exactly why they have continued to lose ground in the rankings and look like a very average team.

@linsu28542 ай бұрын
As a staunch supporter of the Johns brothers, I'm wavering. It's getting tiring to watch them lose tournament after tournament without trying to adapt their playing style. Everyone has gotten so good at dinking. For them to keep thinking that by dinking they are going to get pop-up balls for them to attack is naïve. They need to initiate more attacks from less than perfect condition, like their opponents who beat them do. Collin ... why is his role still about resetting? Since when do we think resetting can win points at a high level?! At this point, I almost want to see the Johns brothers lose more which is the only chance perhaps for them to lose their stubbornness to adapt. My worry is that, if they wait for too long to adapt, it may be too late even when they do.
@chea7z9132 ай бұрын
Absolutely, it's the dinking like you said. Everyone can hang in a dink rally now and Ben isn't going to get as many perfect moments to attack. Instead of spending the time at the top learning how to create opportunities they squandered it with their ultra defensive let you make the first error strategy. You don't see Ben's backhand roll anymore, he's not creating any opportunities with his two handed backhand dinks, in fact his one handed backspin dinks were a lot more effective this match. Their whole game revolves around Ben scoring, if you look at when he was the most dominant, he was constantly trying to create opportunities because he was just that good. Not anymore

It didn't matter that Ben previously used their last time out, as the commentator suggested; the failure to reestablish was the right call. Alshon served the first ball. At 0:04 the ref says 0-0-2, red shorts (Alshon) serves from the top right corner. Ben starts at the kitchen, because he's across from Alshon while Collin receives. After the Johnses win the rally, the ref then announces the score 0-0-1.

Bro Collin is so bad. I had hope that he would change after seeing his more aggressive serve and play style but he went right back to it in this match. So tired of his mediocre play. Not athletic and doesn’t care. His annoying attitude of blaming the netcord and not taking responsibility for his shitty ass finishes. Ben literally has to do everything for his brother. Collin isn’t aggressive at all, no speed ups, very few drives(which are meh)and no good finishes. His only job with playing with Ben was to just be consistent, dink, reset, and counter balls. Yet he can’t even counter especially with the aggressive teams to punish their speed ups. Want Ben to win, but want Collin to lose.
@casey106142 ай бұрын
Disagree. It’s about chemistry they work well together still win high 80s percent of games. Trust me those resets and defense he has makes it look easy. A lot of those things you describe is the JOB of a right sided player and he is still one of the best.

Also I don’t think you read my comment right because I said that is the job of the right side player(Collin), I’m saying he is still failing. He cries over easy netcords even if he can still recover and misses so many counters. He rely’s on Ben to literally cover everything. Paddle improvements have made it possible to play much more aggressively, which is the biggest issue the Johns are facing. They have zero offense from the right side, and really only score points in a couple ways. They need to split up.
@LFEHova2 ай бұрын
There's nothing inherently good or bad about the ball. The big issue is Collin isn't growing with the game and is still hellbent on resetting everything. He literally isn't a threat on the court to win the point, even if you hit him a high dink or dead dink. So anytime the opponents feel threatened, they just send it toward him to get a free reset on the point. Collin needs to adapt to pickleball in 2024, or he and ben will be done.
