Artist Shrine created STAGE 2019 at Papaya Playa Project in Tulum, Mexico. This video shows the evolution and creation process of a beautiful and moving large scale art installation created from reclaimed objects and garbage.
STAGE 2019 is a towering altar, 9,5 meters in height that is a monument meant to provoke a new point of view about all that society discards. Shrine seeks to redefine what is traditionally considered ugly, broken, and trashed by creating beautiful art from it.
To create STAGE 2019, Shrine built a temporary workshop in Papaya Playa Project, where he worked with a crew of local carpenters and painters. Shrine does not sketch, his inspiration comes from rummaging: he is used to dumpster diving and street salvaging. He has created towers and installations around the world, as well as murals in 60 Los Angeles sites. His piece at Papaya Playa Project is a mind-blowing towering installation over our old parking lot that invites the experience of beauty, of reflection and, specially, of daring to have a different point of view about what garbage can become.
