for those watching this video.. this is a restoration! A restoration is not changing the use of the piece say from a dresser to a side table.. its not painting the piece to cover up damage. A restoration is returning the piece to its original functionality, its original appearance as closely as possible. An absolutely wonderful job done here! Beautiful, high quality craftmanship!

Perfect! So glad I found your channel. This is so inspiring to watch. My dad is 98 and was trained as a cabinet maker. He apprenticed when he was 13. I grew up watching and helping him do all sorts of wood work. I am the fifth generation of wood workers in my family, although I don’t do wood work professionally. For me it is only a hobby. Thanks for sharing your work with us. Your level of workmanship is fast becoming extinct. I am glad documenting it with filming like this can keep it alive. Thanks again.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with you. I don't think this craft is fast becoming extinct. I see more and more people both restoring and upcycling old pieces of furniture. This has increased alot over the last fews years, and especially so during Covid lockdowns. With so many sitting around with so much time on their hands, they looked around trying to find things to do. And a new group of restorers have been born. Whether they restore, upcycle, refurbish or repurpose, it's a wonderful thing. Giving old furniture a new lease of life is better for the planet, than throwing it away to buy new pieces.

This restoration is a mix of old world and modern techniques and more than a little humor. A great save as well. The use of animal glue (we guess rabbit skin) sawdust and pigment (guessing again carbon black) and the final finish of wax is the old world part. Some of this craftman's tools are to enough to make any one envious. Power tools for efficiency and hand tools for fine points. Great thought went into the videography with no promotion or infomercial additions. Danke!

I have a couple simple suggestions for you to try out in the future if you're up for it. While this walnut is beautiful as is, its natural beauty can be enhanced even more. First, when left completely sanded out like this all of its depth is removed since the rich patina that develops from age is actually very very thin. You can knock out that rawness and increase its patina with an application of potassium dichromate. Comes in powder form, just mix with water. It's very simple and you can do as many applications as you want, just apply and let dry and you'll see the results within minutes. Works very well also to match up a new piece of wood inserted into an old piece that you haven't sanded all the patina out of. Second tip is before you apply any coating, be it wax or whatever, apply a very thin diluted dewaxed shellac to the wood and let dry (1 or 2 campaigns is up to you). You're not trying to build any film coating on top, you're going to use the shellac because it is a low molecular weight material and it will sink deep into the fibers and pop the chatoyancy in a way that wax alone will never do. Experiment on some scraps and have fun!

Natürlich steckt sehr viel Arbeit, professionelles Wissen und Zeit in dem reparierten Möbel, aber ICH wäre niemals bereit, 1200 € dafür hinzulegen. I love that you let the wood look like wood, instead of giving it a coat of white paint that makes it look covered in saltwater taffy. I watched one designer do that to the furniture of a man who was a master woodworker. I don’t know how he restrained himself.

AMAZING! You are a very talented carpenter and wood restorer. You really know how to give to life and beauty to a broken-down piece of furniture that no one would want. You make into a piece a furniture that everyone would want!

Just stunning. I was afraid the entire time that it would be over stained or, God forbid, painted. Natural wood is beautiful.

I always enjoy seeing care like this restoring an old piece of furniture. I watch Thomas Johnson Furniture Restorations a lot but it's nice to find new people. This came out beautiful a very unique piece was hiding under that paint.

Ach den meinst du. Das ist fertiger Hautleim von Titebond. Den ich im Kocher ansetze ist von Granulat welches man erst einweichen muss.
