This corps always goes for the big emotional impact, and they nail it each and every time, but why they always gotta kill off their drum majors.

That note that hits at 3:36 ON THE DOT, it sounds like mellophones maybe... that's one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard in DCI. I always come back for it.

I think what I love about this the most is that the band and color guard get to actually interact with each other and the guard girl who I think would be playing Juliet loves the band hats..

If the guard isn't going to spin during the opening hit, they should be doing it like this!

because it was too old school by playing music that was nice and had a melody instead of stuff that barely passes as background music in an elevator.

Brass and percussion scores were 6th and 7th, respectively. Remember it was a rebuilding year for them with new percussion staff and it takes awhile to adjust which is why I believe their music ensemble score was on the lower end (5th). Visually, the drill and the performance in totality make quite a synergistic statement, but perhaps the field visual performance judge did not believe the difficulty of their visual performance rivaled that of the top 4 finishers---which, if you go back and watch Crown they finished in 4th (overall, but specifically in visual performance) and had a visual book that had variety (think triple tonguing and moving, jazz running through pass-throughs, and twisting and turning in the middle of isolated hits, etc.). IMO, 5th was accurate but it doesn't take away from the fact that this was quite the old-school show that goes for all the feels and succeeds in getting people up out of their seats-not by gimmick, but rather through EARNED payout of effect---something we hardly see anymore these days.

No one brings out emotions like Phantom, with their lush sound, but their drill design is always awkward, and the show is not showing off for the judges, so it is not maximizing points.
