Deciphering the Secret of Joy
After outlining the terrifying 98 curses in Parashas Ki Savo, the Torah delivers a stunning explanation for why these punishments will befall a person: “Because you did not serve Hashem with joy and a willing heart, amid an abundance of everything.” At first glance, these verses seem contradictory. The Torah initially implies the curses are due to neglecting the Mitzvos, but then it clarifies the real cause is not a lack of performance, but rather a lack of joy in fulfilling them.
This raises a powerful and perplexing question: Why is the absence of joy in mitzvah performance considered a more severe offense than idol worship or other major sins? The Mishna in Yoma teaches that even grave transgressions are atoned for through suffering and repentance. Yet, for lacking joy in service to Hashem, the Torah warns of unparalleled suffering-slavery, famine, and utter destruction at the hands of enemies.
Why is such a harsh punishment reserved for this seemingly minor shortcoming? What is the profound message behind the Torah’s insistence on joy in mitzvah observance? In this Shiur we will explore the deeper meaning of joy, why it plays a critical role in our relationship with Hashem, and why its absence has such devastating consequences.
