The shifting you see, the middle of the waveform is not aligned with the middle line in the analysis, is caused by shifting of the direct current or a slightly shifted membrane. This happens mostly in the electronic domain and can shift the recording. You can easily repair this in any audio editor by a operation called DC correction, Offset correction or simple off-set BTW you also hear this shifting resulting in a pulse sound, whenever you hit play or stop. When corrected your example would sound much clearer, especially since you playback very short durations. Good tutorial !

Indeed the only tutorial on PRAAT there is on KZbin yet - thanks, this was very useful for me as well! I would encourage you to do more, specialised tutorials on the individual operations that can be done in PRAAT.

Interesting, what is the thesis about? As for VOT, I thought you meant its length (e.g. strong aspiration etc). If you mean, where exactly to take the point when the vocal folds would be considered to have started vibrating, I'm not aware of any rules for that, bacause the starting phase is so short. I'll ask John Wells and keep you updated ;-)

? [d] is a voiced consonant; it's quiet because it's obstructed, but still voiced (although the woman speaking is British and they're de-voicing many of their consonants - like Germans). I think you're speaking n the fry register (indicative of submissiveness). Women do this a lot in the western U.S., especially young women. Great tutorial. I'm really looking for info on how to insert text and set up axis numbering systems for an exported pitch image with consonants and vowels indicated on the image. I wonder where I can find this...

Thanks for posting. I have been looking for software to help me "filter" or otherwise help me with EVPs form my Paranormal work. I get some great EVPs but some at times it is hard to hear all of the words do to back ground or white noise. I currently use Audacity, but I am told that it can and will mess up your recording files. I do like to watch the wave on the graft as I am playing the files. I can sometimes see an EVP before I hear it. If anyone has input, I would love to hear it!

Thanks for your brief introduction to Praat. This video is really useful! I have a question for you: How can I identify the onset and the offset of a vowel? I know that both the V onset and offset should be shown in red above the waveform, nevertheless I’m trying to figure out which part of the vowel should I highlight so as the accurate number of its onset and offset to be indicated above. Let’s take for instance the word ‘data’ [‘deitə]. What would be the onset and the offset of the vowel /a/ [ei] and how can I get it? Looking forward to receiving your feedback.

Hi, there! Thank you sooo much for posting this tutorial, I've found it much useful!!! Hey, I have a question: do you happen to know how we can draw/write the segmentation of a word under that part of the spectrogram that shows such segment? I once saw someone presenting a paper in which she let everyone listen to a particular segment, and she had actually written each of the segments of the word under the spectrogam... Thanks!!!
