If you shoot the 22 limp then yeah you don't learn anything, but if you actually use your same grip with the 22 trainer as you do with your carry gun, then you do grow. And if I didn't do 22lr, then it would be dry fire or no practice at all. So not like my alternatives train recoil any better.

@christofrini2 жыл бұрын
Something that I wish you had emphasized slightly more: Keep in mind that for a “pest control” rifle, the size of your “pest” is extremely important. Eg, if you’re hunting a squirrel with a roughly 4 inch “kill box”, then you’re looking at a bullet drop nearly twice as large as your target with some of those subsonic loads at 100 yards. If you have a mil / BDC reticle and know your holds, this is fine - but the supers effectively double or triple the “point blank” range, and you have the option to zero for 50 and effectively ignore drop out to 100yds. For larger pests and/or smaller ranges, this isn’t an issue, but it’s worth knowing the capabilities of your rifle.
@LuckyGunner2 жыл бұрын
Discussed briefly in the previous video -- I personally prefer headshots on pests, so that leaves almost no margin for error. Even with a BDC reticle, you'd need to be able to eyeball the difference between something like 100 and 120 yards, which is tough. Of course, if it's on your property or somewhere familiar, you may already know exact ranges based on landmarks, etc. If I needed more range, or wanted to settle for body shots, I'd probably look into something like a .22 magnum or .17 HMR.
@BeefNEggs0572 жыл бұрын
I was looking at a ballistics app and it looks like zeroing at 25 yards is ideal. The bullet is rising out to 50 yds and then falls back out to 100yds. So 25yds zero makes the 100 yd drop almost nil with high velocity rounds and very manageable even with subsonics. If you zero at 50yds you get a lot more noticeable drop at 100. Seems counterintuitive until you remember how curved a 22 shoots. Not a flat shooter at all. 25 yds gives the best fit for everything inside 100 yds. You get a bit of right spin movement at 100 from where you are aiming is what I have noticed. Look at a ballistics app and you’ll see the 25 yd zero gives you 2 inches high at 50yds and 2” low at 100. Both easy to compensate for. Going off memory on the 2” but should be close.
@johnelder42732 жыл бұрын
Nobody with half a brain is shooting squirrel size game at 100 yards with a .22lr. You are shooting pests at 50 yards max, usually at 35 yards or less. Otherwise you would be using a .223 or .556.
@mattmarzula2 жыл бұрын
@@BeefNEggs057 Apps aren't reality. Is your scope 3" above the boreline? Because none of that would be true at any initial velocity for .22 LR. I've shot and been shooting .22 Short, Long, LR, and Magnum for nearly three decades. Even the Norma .24gr at 1,700 fps from a 24" barrel won't do that +2" at 50 yds -2" at 100 yds ballistic magic. Until you're shooting .22 Hornet or .223 Rem or something nearing 2,100 fps there's no standard 5mm pill doing what you're claiming. Especially with a standard powder charge between 0.5 and 2.0gr. for subsonic and high-velocity respectively. Check your memory. There isn't a .22 LR in existence that performs like that out of any barrel length in existence at any scope height in existence. That's just some bench rest shooter Fudd bullshit.
@johnweymouth56852 жыл бұрын
I'm old school, (back b4 the days of scopes with bullet drop compensation), the rule of thumb for 22lr in a rifle, (does not apply the same 4other calibers), is sight it dead on at 10yrds and it hits dead on again at 75yrds. The trajectory is so close this works for all 22lr ammo and groups are tight enough it works for all ranges between 10&75yrds. I was taught this by my uncle (great depression error)&I've used this method all my life using rem 40gr thunderbolts to cci stingers in my old Ithaca with iron sights & ruger 10/22 with weaver 4x scope. The results were with both rounds and both rifles at 10yrds 10 rounds inside a dime area & 10 rounds inside a half silver dollar at 75yrds & all only raising about a half inch at top of trajectory. After 75yrds the drop was more extreme. The 22 is a capable and humane little round out to about 75yrds, after that it's more of an inhumane stunt for pest control or small game

I absolutely loved that rifle. About 10 years ago, Savage brought the o/u .22/.410 combo back into production as the Savage Model 42. This. Standard velocity ammo groups far better out of every gun I've ever used. If I get a good rest I can punch half inch groups at 50 yards with my Tikka T1x with good ammo. Even CCI Standard Velocity hovers at around 0.75". High velocity stuff often struggles to get 3" groups at 50 yards. Including Mini-Mags and Stingers. I've literally never had good accuracy with high velocity ammo.

200 yard groups: CCI Mini Mag: 3.4" CCI Clean 22 Subsonic: 5.6" CCI Stinger: 7.1" Winchester Wildcat: 10.5" Eley Subsonic HP: 12.1" Remington Viper: 13.5" Wind was sporadic and heavy enough to open up the groups a bit, so take all that with a grain of salt. There was no clear correlation between velocity and accuracy. Remington Viper grouped poorly at all distances. Either the truncated cone shape hurts accuracy, or the Savage just doesn't like that particular load. The Eley would have been closer to 4 or 5 inches, but there was one flyer.

Spent the afternoon ranging in with a mil dot scope. Next morning i was up EARLY waiting on them.( pack) The"barker" sat on his usual spot & i hit him square in the sternam. The pack hauled ass & i got the last one over the ridge right up his tailpipe @ just over 900 yards. Sheer dumb luck last shot as i was emptying the magazine chasing them. Found both slugs IN their hearts completely NON expanded. But it killed em all the same. Love thoes Mini Mags!! I think the drop was 30-40 feet. I put the very bottom of the scope about 5 ft over the sitting yotes head. I dont know WHO was more surprised. Me or the yote. He leaped off the cliff when hit. The runner was 40 feet over the hill face down dead eating dirt. Slug went right through his soft internals into its heart. Never in a million years did i think id make either shot. Just wanted to get close & scare em so i could sleep in. THAT pack never came back. 30 years earlier i jumped a HUGE Jackrabbit out walking the mesas. MISSED him at 10 feet when he broke & watched him race off the plateau, run out across the wide mesa below & up the far side into a bush w a hole in its middle the sun was shining through. The light went out in the bush so i knew he had run into it. Jack was soooo far away i couldnt even the rabbit, just his dust trail as he ran. Had my grandfathers Remington 742 & open sights. (HAD eagle eyes back then.) I laid down, put a big rock under the forend & lined up the shot with the bush, set the back end down into the sand & fired. The " hole" in the bush opened up & i could see dust flops as the Jack flew out of it tumbling down the sand hill. Ran over & found him dead. Shot in the eye w the slug still in his skull. No exit. That sucker was looking straight back at me when hit. Later returned to the same spot years later with a rangefinder & it was just under 1000 yards. Never underestimate the range of a mini mag. Granted, thoes were ALL Hail Mary shots. But out of 1000s one gets LUCKY every so often.

Very interesting video. Thank you for sharing. The force of gravity acts upon all bullets exactly the same. So if you let the bullets travel indefinitely with no target to hit, they would all eventually drop to the ground. And they would do so within the exact same time frame. (But would travel vastly different distances within said time frame). The difference with the targets is that depending on the fps, some bullets hit the target faster than others. The force of gravity is the same, but the faster bullets reach the target first, so the amount of time that gravity is acting on them gets cut short. Using that simple math, you could theoretically calculate how much a bullet will drop at a given distance based simply on fps. The manufacturer of the bullet would be irrelevant at that point--gravity doesn't care about the brand name. I think videos like this are great because they allow people to better choose ammo based on their actual needs. If you just need to hit something 15 yards away, any ammo will do. If you're trying to hit something at 150 yards without wanting to have to compensate for tons of bullet drop, then higher velocity is better.

The best round I've ever used is the 22 Hornet. I don't ever remember having a crawl off with it, although the price and availability of 22 Hornet ammo is something not everyone can find. I've always tried to keep .22lr short and personal - as once it starts dropping it tends to not just drop, but waver as well. The gun also matters a lot. I get a lot more drop from my Higgs (semi-auto) than I do from my Remi bolt with the same ammo and barrel length and even more drop from the shorter 10/22. At 80 yards with the same Federal 550 box (the old walmart special), I get 2", 4" and 6-8" respectively between the Remi, Higgs, and 10/22. I haven't tried, but I probably would get increasing drop over a day of shooting with the semi-autos as the action got heavier to work with accumulating crud.

Lucky gunner is great for buying ammo but my friend said he cant order 12 gauge because hes only 20 years old. The website says you have to be at least 21 years old. And thats not the law. The law is 18 for rifle or shot gun and that includes 9mm, .40, .45 if to be used in a rifle. And 21 for handgun ammo. I just dont understand how a company can be pro gun and sell ammo but doesnt sell even when the law states its legel.

Did you happen to take decibel readings for each type of ammo? Or by your ear, did you notice any significant differences in sound or "crack" between the subsonic and normal loads?

You shouldn't select ammo based on how far you can shoot with the least amount of bullet drop. Grouping size out of the rifle is how you should choose the ammo for that firearm.
@zacharybaldrige30472 жыл бұрын
Grain to velocity ratios are important for accuracy. Usually heavy 40 to 50 grain projectiles pushing 1200 to 1500 fps are the most accurate. From. There to tighten groups you can weigh each round d and try to mach weights and have common weight rounds you can assure some type of guaranteed grouping with reduce chance of a flyer. Pcp Air rifle tunes a chonograph can teach you a lot about how far you can go with fps/grain

I've heard and maybe experienced ( I haven't tested it personally) that 22lr achieves the highest velocity from a barrel length of less than 20 inches. After 20 inches the additional length is potentially slowing the projectile down.

Big thing you missed is transonic tumble. Shooting sub sonic out of the gate negates this but super sonic groups can open up a significant amount past 60-75 yards

I like the .22 round and .22 rifles Marlin model 60 , savage f . Never shot a .22 pistol but seems to make sense a good long barrel pistol in .22 or 17hmr would be cool I think . I’ve shot .22 s for years but most recently the last two months every other day at least of not days in a row doing scopes , checking things out , making them precise and figuring out what ammo is working best and the Remington cheapo s at wal mart cycle well in semi automatic , 1200 fps 40 grain . The Winchester white was jamming . Golden boys worked well . Everything seems to worked very well cci. Stinger and them hollow point segmented Winchester did the best ballistics imo . I was shooting 50-150 yds and figured that’s about all a .22 is good for with a 3x 9 scope and bullet drop . That bullet drops hard before 200 but pretty good out to 100 and within . If it’s shooting around 1-2” close range around 15-20yds u ll be good to 100 easy . I just threw paint can lids and spray paint can lids down and watched them jump around . I thought the Bushnell banner 2 $90 @walmart has been an excellent scope fellas ! It’s clear at x9 and has been performing as good as the other name brands . I like all the cool things us hunter shooter bow shooter tool guys like to get and use .

For practical purposes, people who are regularly dispatching varmints need to look into magnum rimfires. .22WMR offers a lot of varieties in bullet weights while pushing practical effective range to 125-150yds. The .17HMR is less flexible but against small varmints it has a super flat trajectory and more than enough penetration with both its lighter and heavier loadings. I own all three and love them all, they compliment each other very well.

Then no reason to run suppressed. If you have never ran suppressed with a 22 bolt gun you have no idea how quiet they really are, truly "movie" quiet with subs

I have shot minimags out to 200 yards on the range and consistently hit a Vatmint Target. I would never take a shot at that range against an actual varmint but it is fun test my skill. My Mk II has the standard 18" barrel so the drop is slightly less than your test.

a .22lr would do the job if you can hit them, but typically a round of birdshot is better suited to deal with harder to hit pests.

My 581s, 24 in barrel, CCI 29gn, SHORT @ 710 fps, CCI Quite, 40gn, LR @ 710 fps. With these loads, my rifle isn't any louder then a CO2 pellet pistol. No Muffler, Suppressor, Silencer, what ever you want to call it, simply isn't needed. Besides the out right HIGH COST of getting the proper paperwork to legally have one of those devices is the biggest holdback for NOT getting all the legal owner stuff. The Yellow Jackets and Stingers in my 4in, SS revolver are LOUD. At the range any noise is allowed. No need for a device. Join a Range, shoot a lot, know your equipment , get good, be prepared, PRACTICE. A 22lr round put exactly in the exact right spot, can and is deadly. O S O K
