good stuff. I am a karateka, and this is very similar to the kotegaeshi that I employ, and drill.

I believe kotegaeshi isnt supossed to be used to catch a punch (well sometimes you can get it if you are lucky) and another thing is, you dont understand the principle of the hand pulling before the kotegaeshi. that is why the opponent has a chance to punch you. you should pull the opponent very low to make them losing power and cant punching properly

good demonstration ,in my opinion , , aikido is a kind projection of combat in safety way, to the dojo to make people understande how to move and how to escap a dangerous situation , but it stays virtual ,it can't make you a warrior unless you began a real fight, fore instance studying economie or bussines don't make you a busseness man unless you anter in reel bussiness and tray to keep safe

Gary, this is an excellent analysis of kote gaeshi, and identifies the core weakness of its dojo practice, that is, the fact the defense is used against an unrealistic attack. This core problem is one found throughout the martial arts. All the defenses should be practiced against the sort of attacks you can expect on the street, not the formalistic attacks ukes normally apply in the dojo. Let me suggest one thought about kote gaeshi, however. I do not believe it is intended to address a punch to the stomach. For one thing, on the street, nobody attacks that way. People almost always punch to the head on the street with a haymaker style punch. So, I think that the punch to the stomach in aikido (and jujutsu as well since kote gaeshi is a technique common to all jujutsu ryuha) is really meant to be a surrogate for a knife thrust to the stomach, and it is more profitable to think of it that way. If you study video of how knife attacks to the stomach are executed, you generally see the knife hand coming forward and up with a rising motion, the knife arm swinging like a pendulum. The hand rarely comes straight from the hip. The tori often does not have time to move aside in that nice taisabaki. Instead, taisabaki, to the extent it can be used at all, must be combined with the hand, which should touch the top of uke's knife arm with the palm and redirect the arm while establishing a grip on the forearm at the wrist. Then you execute kote gaeshi. I agree with you on the small circle rather than the large circle.

Check out some of my other videos. I had limited attacks to deal with. Not to mention I had a certain agenda and limited time.

attack from partner is unrealistic, so the defense is unrealistic

hey Gary, if you try to teach defence from "modern attacks" using aikido why you tell your students to make attack like average non-expierienced person? shouldn't we learn how to strike and defend those strikes like proffesionals? if you can defend proffesional strike you have no problem with the average one, in opposite situation - i doubt it. Regards, JJ

I like your videos and I think it is helpful. But I have to tell that what you said about traditional aikido in doing kotegaeshi in flashy way that has an opening is not true. Actually the japanese shihans don't like the breakfalls in regular training and it's known to create a suki (opening) if you do it in the way that you showed. The only exception is when doing embukai (demonstrations). The kotegaeshi that is intended to be directed downwards (as shown by you) is what being taught in traditional aikido. Finally, thanks for uploading these videos as they are helpful to let others know that aikido is a true budo that strives to have no openings when techniques are concerned.

Your technique (basically kihon waza here) needs some polish. If O' Sensei came back today, i think he'd be pissed the reputation Aikido has as far as a self defense art now. And if you think for one minute dojo Aikido works, then you have got a long way to go on that path. Good luck!

I would probably take your videos more seriously if the keikogi was worn properly, especially with a hakama. If we cannot do that, which takes no martial skill, how are we supposed to take the rest of the content seriously?

Great response from someone who does not know the importance of the proper wearing of the clothing. There is deeper more appropriate martial meaning than one would think....but that's OK...stay ignorant.

Aikido is currently having bad reputation as non practical martial art. Yet someone here still talking about wearing hakama properly. I hope people start to take of the gi and earn practical aspect of aikido coz i doubt that etiquette will save their lives on the street.

At 2:12, no, you are not at a save angle. 3:24, you get hit because your body posture is completely wrong ... your body poster is wrong during the whole video. Good luck with your Aikido, this video is just awful. No wonder there are so many Aikido haters in the US :P
