Last word you typed is key. Peace. Keeping it simple is good but causing harm to your aggressor misses the cornerstone teaching of akido "the art of peace". Food for thought. That being said you have to walk before you can run and in most situations simple is better. You learn complicated stuff to add more to your ability to react and peacefully resolve a situation no matter the situation without harm to yourself or your aggressor"

@@captaingreenhat I totally agree with you Captain. But you also have to take in consideration that every situation is different. For someone who's advansed in the art of Aikido, an aggressive encounter could be handled peacefully without causing harm or extensive harm. But, if your Aikido skills are not as advanced you need to counter your aggressor in any which way that you can in order to survive. I'm not and never was taught in the art of Aikido but I do understand the principle of the Art, it is quite fascinating. Thanks for sharing

I learnt aikido for 4 years before moving out to university. With my small experience, I can say that aikido doesn't make you a fighter but as judo it make you aware of body placement and how to use your weight and the weight of your opponent to help you. It also learns you how to fall, and that is a skill that's very useful in life in general !

I don't know about others but an intensive 6 month training of Aikido helped me fixate an attacker by using arms, he was not able to move which gave me the ability to talk to him and calm him down. Or made him realize there's no point in trying to attack me again because I will just do the same thing again. This experience made me believe in Aikido.

I read through most of the comments here. Many miss the point. Street fights are very chaotic to say the least. For the time the gentleman invested making this video, He's simply giving some basic ideas perhaps for someone not so knowledgeable about the subject, and giving them a place to start in their training. I thought it was very applicable, and very well explained.

@@autonomous2010 That's exactly the use of martial arts nowadays (well, in my opinion, anyway), to be able to defend another. Running is usually just much more effective. However, you, or more often another, might not be able to run. Then, you'd like to be able to hold your own and defend yourself or the other. This situation might not even ever happen in your life, but it's always good to be prepared, I think. Besides, I just like to see the movements of martial artists.

Owen Modeste you're right. No matter what martial arts you learn be it Karate, Tang Soo Do, Kungfu, Boxing, Krav Maga etc..they only teaches responds and movements based on known situations and controlled environment or settings. What differs a fighter and a martial artist is the ability to observe, learn, adapt, improvise and overcome the challenges that comes. There's no other ideal way to achieve that except facing the real situations. Some martial arts like Krav Maga are not known by many but they are as lethal as others because people uses them in real fight for life. Just ask any Israeli soldiers or maybe if you are fortunate enough may request for a training and 'fight' at their army bases. Formality is only for demonstrations and training. The practicality of the mives and responds to any given situations will have to be obtained in real life fights whereby your win will be determined by your ability to adapt and improvise. Good luck.

A collegue of mine was interested in practicing Aïkido, so I told him all great things this art is bringing to me, the quality of my Dojo and my Senseï''s teaching. As soon as he said he was also motivated by learning how to fight, I adviced to pratice Muay Thai and/or JJB instead. Nevertheless, most free fight and self defense academies are fraud too by lying or over-estimasting the result of their training (very unequal and often rubish) :-) I would say that it is not completly useless in specific situations. It really helped me a couple of times. Finaly, the answer to which sport combat/martial art is the best has been revealed on this channel. The man was a street fighter for real (he taunted bad boys abroad in pubs and alleys when he traveled for his demonstrations and made them bleed...) and he was a hell of a fighter, but he mixed aikido with other martial arts and common sense. He once told my father aikido is the ultimate martial art, but you must be very good to make the most of it, else you won't stand a chance if someone well trained attacks you. Better learn box or something else if you don't practise it at a very high level.

I am second degree brown belt from the 90's and Aikido is a combination of mixed arts( Karate, self defense and Judo). When used correctly should be sufficient. Self defense always prevail in feeling to realize it's about to go down to prepare. The initial reaction to the confrontation normally determines the direction of the altercation. But with a seasoned fighter, you can recover from loosing with a given opportunity.

Both O'sensei and Shioda sensei said that Aikido is 70% atemi. Atemi (striking the vitals points) is essential to make your Aikido work in the street! My favourite atemiwaza are Judo chops to the carotid artery or the chopping the point behind the ear (the vagus nerve). It is the easiest and quickest way to knock out even a large strong attacker!

Technique; fight-style and "rules" aren't relevant to the practice of aikido (ok, "rules" are, in relation to etiquette). Aikido is a "master" art: meaning you can apply it to many disciplines. Fighting is only one narrow application. And point of fact there are at least seven diverse "styles" of aikido: but they are interchangeable in practice. I can go from a yoshinkan dojo to study at a Ki Society dojo in the same day, with no issues.

He says, "Aikido in its basic form doesn’t work. What works are the principles. Aikido is not designed to 'work.' It’s designed for the study of certain principles - distance, economy of action, technique, accuracy, how to become an axis, how to use leverage, how to place oneself in relation to an attack. It’s the principles that 'work.'"

The "effective, simple strike" he did there is the very first technique in the 17 basic technique of Aikido. It's the first one of Atemiwaza. Also, once you get to a certain level of Aikido, the form does not matter. What matters is the principles behind it. Breaking balance, get out of the way, attack your opponent's physical weak point, etc. If you just desperately trying to perform a technique on the street without any adaptation to the situation, of course you will get hit. And that's not what Aikido promotes. DON'T BLAME AIKIDO; BLAME YOURSELF FOR NOT LEARNING THE CORE OF AIKIDO.

All the things you showed is exactly why Aikido succeeds in the street fight. The problem with people who take Aikido is they try to apply a straight kata, to a street fight, no straight taught approach with ANY martial art works with a textbook kata. One has to interpret and apply the lessons in a kata in a practical way! I stress that to my students (first dan here). Aikido is a fantastic practical martial art but a lot of people seem to have a problem implementing the techniques in a practical way. It's about redirection, and joint manipulation in a direct way when faced with a direct threat. True Aikido way is to inflict the least amount of harm necessary to subdue or disable your opponent but in the end, the choice of needed force is up to you. My Aikido training has saved me numerous times, whether it was just diffusing the situation or having to handle an angry violent opponent. I have also studied Tai Chi, Chin Na and Shotokan Karate, but it was Aikido that made the most sense in a life and death situation.

Chest puffed out, shouting louder to seem more intimidating, walk closer to get in your face, throw a tester punch to see what you do, throw more if you fight back. They all come telegraphed. The best thing you can do, and the reason I stopped losing fights, is to understand and be aware of your surroundings, keep a minimum distance from your aggressor and strike first whilst closing the distance. Don't let a meathead use his shit tactics when even the smallest amount of martial arts and awareness will win you most of your fights against morons.

I have always experienced aikido as an elaborate dance when training. Of course aikido can fail when in a street situation. But the core idea of aikido, using the opponents energy(movement) against themselves is extremely effective. Aikido is not about pounding your opponent to a bloody pulp or breaking their legs. It's about using their energy to be able to subdue them.

Decades later, one winter day I'm out walking to the garage after an ice storm and hit a slippery spot and went flying through the air in a fall that could have seriously injured or killed me. But the old training, I had thought long since forgotten kicked in and in the 1 second or so that I was airborne, I twisted to the right, got my right arm out and slapped the ground as I came down and hit. To my amazement, nothing hurt, nothing broken, not even an ache. I got up, brushed myself off, marveled at how such a simple trick could work and went about my business.

Nor fights end on the ground (only losers end up there). Still... definitely you should learn boxing/judo since they cover all the basic in the most simple way possible (like the video preach)... alot of the "techniques" work well against "ordinary" people. I've used the video techniques in all my street fights. Worked. Friends used Aikido, Muaythai... at the end.. It's the person that matters. However, like I mentioned above.. For the head grab thing near the end, Like I’m not completely sure of how actually effective that is but I think he forgot to mention stepping to break into the other person’s stance, just grabbing someone’s head isn’t enough to get them off balance You need to break into the stance a bit to ruin their balance I thought, rotation from the back foot and almost tripping them too

I've studied Tang Soo Do and currently Kenpo as well as a few other Kung Fu styles and Boxing. What I found is the same techniques can be found across different styles.

And keep in mind sword culture and multiple attacker. As a jujitsuka I improved myself with aikido. Philosophy is the key

I agree with your statements and wish to add that Aikidoka generally find the art after having done other arts and/or boxing. They tend to have evolved past the "works in the street" mentality and have moved on to love of the art and it's discipline for the sake of the art and the discipline. People searching for the ultimate martial art dont seem to be capable of understanding that there isnt one. Everything is a compromise or an adaptation to a style's compromise. In the "real world" situations these goes go on and on about, all it takes is 7 or 8 well executed and practiced basic techniques to be able to beat 99% of the bar brawlers out there. The other 1%, well; it's gonna hurt bro. lol. Avoidance is the best way to win a street fight.

I'd say all of these are aikido techniques that you might learn quite early. :) I like the reasoning though, a quick technique that goes for the head will likely cause less damage to your opponent than a prolonged fight even if that technique involves an elbow, and it won't look as bad to a court of law.

I'll be honest, got nothing against people practicing aikido at all. To each their own. But when it comes to self defence, I really think that muay thai, boxing or bjj is a much better option, it's tried and tested with plenty of examples of it being used effectively for real. But i've barely found any real examples using aikido. Just my thoughts

aikido is used by police forces all over the world. if you want to see it in regular action then go to Japan and follow the Tokyo Metropolitan Riot Police team policing units as they spend Friday and Saturday nights in Tokyo and Yokohama cleaning up drunk US Marines and Navy sailors. They don't screw around and understand the difference between dojo practice of an art and application of effective technique on the street in policing.

@iatsd
@iatsd 7 жыл бұрын
Whatever you were looking at was written by a moron then. Taihojutsu is the application side of things. Police in Japan are, by NPA regulation, required to practice either aikido, judo, or kendo. They are expressly forbidden to practice things like karate or MMA on police time. Certain special units are allowed to cross train in select other things. For example, the Special Police Reaction Unit (basically, an anti-terrorism unit) in the Tohoku region cross train in Olympic style wrestling. Krav maga? ffs... :-/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiho_Jutsu

Aikido is not used by Tokyo Riot Police. They train normal police arrest and restraint as well as normal riot training. I think you are going to defend your position by making reference to the Yoshinkan aikido course that members of the riot police attend. Well, that is only for select officers, and it isnt for learning practical techniques. It is trained for the martial spirit.

Thank you ! I am now retired Law enforcement from NYC and can relate. I agree with your concept about keeping it simple. Overthinking a defense can only result in disaster, especially if the defending party has not practice the same technique to a point that it has become an automatic response. My instructor Grandmaster Reno Morales always said keep it simple with a continuous flow. He often said end the fight as soon as it starts if possible, you are not there for a boxing match with multiple rounds allowing the perpetrator more chances to hurt you. Be well my friend and much success.

Every organized martial art that isn't specifically trained as a method of assault will fail in an IRL situation, because most the practitioners unconciously hold back, or are expecting specific responses to their movements. They don't have the mindset needed for the follow through. I've been in a few fights, and had to bail a friend out of one, where he thought his martial arts (competition judo) made him better than some drunk dude on the street in a fight. He had no idea how to respond upon the other guy not letting himself be thrown. He also got himself a good thumping from me afterward when he told me he 'didn't want to hurt the guy'. If you get in a real fight, your priority better be removing the threat as quickly as possible, even if that means breaking things. None of the modern taught martial arts, at least in the western world are truly taught as a martial art anymore, and as a result aren't really viable as a self defense method, because there are holes in either the technique taught, or in the mindset taught.

Aikido is not someone punch someone in their face. Aikido is defending without doing any harm. And btw, finally it will work on the street if you practice and practice. Edit: 1:29 that part i've practice a few weeks ago for the first time. I started Aikido in april. But this looks wonderful too, Aikido combination with a fighting technique.

Look up old videos of Ueshiba Sensei (O-sensei) and watch him hit people. Aikido has changed a lot over the years toward a soft practice. Parts of it work, but parts are unrealistic on the street. However, it's a fun martial art and great exercise, and can provide a lovely spiritual practice. I did it for 8 years, and I taught for 4 of those. No regrets - but I did end up moving on. P.S. THE FALLS!!! OMG, the most useful part of Aikido are the falls. I fell off a horse once and did a breakfall and it saved my neck.
