This week, I just discovered that on very light fabrics, even if there is interfacing, it is hard to have a nice crisp buttonhole... so, to give it a try (I have no clue where it came from!), I just put a small rectangle of parchmin paper underneath my fabric where I was to sew and the stifness of the paper and the sleek of it made the machine just slide smoothly while sewing. It did not "eat" the fabric neither make bunch of treads underneath. After having sewn my buttonhole, I peeled off the remaining paper around the buttonhole and all was as perfect as manufactured!

Hi Juliet, Another tip I've found (as I have an older sewing machine without much fancier than a zigzag), is that hand-sewing works really well! Particularly for hems (like narrow hems finishing a neck). I also do hand-finished felled-seams! (Yes I've been watching a lot of Bernadette Banner). I mostly use good quality cotton jersey lycra, which behaves well, with a stretch needle. I've found that viscose lycra can be much sloppier somehow, and avoid polyester!
@JulietUzor_4 жыл бұрын
This just made my day! I say this because hand sewing has been getting little love from me and I was going to bring it back to my routine. Thanks so much for this excellent reminder 💚💜
@catherinerw14 жыл бұрын
Don't bother with jersey hand-sewing needles though... they don't work very well. Felling stitch has enough stretch in it for most things, but I use herringbone stitch for catching down the inside of an elasticated waistband (I googled stretchy hand-stitches).

I need to amend my dri-fit shirt. It’s an active wear with very stretchy, thin honey-combed type of fabric. At least jersey and Lycra would have a bit of toughness and thickness to them, but this fabric is giving me and the machine a tough time to work on. I have tried straight stitch, zigzag, even lightning but I still get skip stitches. Changed the needle to super stretch, the results are still the same. My last resort is to purchase the walking foot. I have read somewhere that generic walking foot does cause skip-stitching as well, but the original is way too expensive at this point for just amendments.. Any other hacks?

I'm new to sewing and I was wondering could you do a video slowly with step by step instructions with how you attach your walking foot to your machine I know I have a different sewing machine by if you show us how you attach your feet than I wont feel so overwhelming stupid with trying to attach mine, I'm afraid of my machine but when I watch someone describe their machine and what different components are I feel more confident about tacking mine I've learn so much where as the paper booklet was written in some higher form of language...lol.. I ordered a new stretch needle and walking foot thingy....scared ny mom trying to make jersery neckgaitors with insert for filter..😷👋🤦♀️✌💚

Very interesting video. I am about to reshape a one-size very soft stretch fabric. To make smaller. 52% Viscose 26% polistre, 22% Poliammide. Italian . How can I stop the seams when I cut from curling. I will certainly use a cutter. Should I pin or hand sew large stitches before sewing on the machine. No videos on Utube to show how to make an oversize ladies top smaller.

Sometimes, I find that it might be the needle. Otherwise, try sandwiching it with greaseproof paper or Swedish tracing paper. I've read about that hack on a blog somewhere and I cant remember which blog it was.

I have done everything you have said and I am still having issues with my machine performing a zig zag stitch. It will do so on a cotton fabric but won't on a lycra. It will be set to zig zag but I only get a straight line with an occasional zig zag randomly through out. I am so frustrated!

Oops, indeed! I've got one more question: I have a thin, super slippery jersey at home ready to go and the damn selvages WON'T lie flat at all, they keep rolling inwards making it impossible to line up my pieces with the grain line. Have you got any ideas on how to remedy that? 🥺

What if it's a regular vintage butterfly sewing you are workings with... And you don't have a serger?
@JulietUzor_4 жыл бұрын
If you’re working with a machine that hasn’t any zig zag stitches, then the knit fabrics you sew using straight stitches just have to be loosely fitted. Honestly. I say this because I’ve tried sewing knit fabrics using straight stitches and some way or the other, the stitches break when the fabric stretches eg. Whilst putting on the dress etc
@precious55964 жыл бұрын
Okay ma. Thanks alot for replying ❤️

Another tip, when doing something you haven't done before practice on a scrap of your fabric,such as when you make a v- neck top, make a mock-up .

What thread 🧵 do you use with your jersey knit fabrics.
@clairecolthurst57144 жыл бұрын
Having trouble sewing cotton lycra starting my seams without my feed dogs eating the ends when I’m trying to lock my stitch in to begin with. How do I combat this?
@JulietUzor_4 жыл бұрын
Claire Colthurst hey Claire... everytime I have that issue... a needle change normally solves it. Also... do t start your 1stitch at the very top of the fabric. Move the fabric about 1cm in, stitch forward, then back stitch to sew up the open part. After that, start stitching. I’ve found that this helps me. Also remember to move the long tails of your thread away from the fabric so it doesn’t get chewed up as well.
