Ar 15 Got accuracy? Does twist rate really matter in the Ar 15? What is the best Ar 15 barrel twist rate? In this Video, I'll discuss Ar 15 (5.56 nato /.223 Rem) twist rate (1-7, 1-8, 1-9) and bullet stability | accuracy. I will also discuss the practical accuracy and the three common internet myths regarding twist rate and stability | accuracy. I'll also do a shooting demonstration at 100 yards (short range) and 568 yards (mid range) to prove the concepts I talk about in the discussion portion of the video.

Been hitting videos and forums like crazy trying to figure out exactly what twist rate and length i need for my AR build. Still looking at an 18" 1:8, probably will be shooting mainly 62-68 gr fmj, of course ill still put 55 through it for training and plinking but this puts me more at ease knowing I'm not gonna just spit lighter loads at targets

Thank you! I've had people tell me my 1-7 barrel needs 62 grain or heavier bullets, but my experience has been that this is false. My gun shoots 55, 50, and even 42 grain bullets in sub 2 MOA groups. It does well with 75 and 77 grain bullets as well, at least out to 300 yards.

If you search for different videos on youtube, you will find 1:9s shooting 75s or 77s to 500+ perfectly. In others, you will someone shoot a 75 from 1:9 at a target ten feet away and it will keyhole. There are a few variables that explain this: Elevation: the higher the elevation, the more stable a given bullet at a given velocity will be. A bullet on the edge of stability will be quite unstable much quicker if you drop from 2,000 above sea level to sea level. Temperature: the higher the temperature, the more stable. A marginally stable bullet at 100 degrees will lose stability much sooner at 70 degrees. Barrel variance. Between manufacturers, and even within them, a '1:9 twist' is not always really 1:9. Some 1:9s measure closer to 1:8 than 1:9 (example, stamped with 1:9 but it measures 1.84) and some measure closer to 1:10. The 1:84 '1:9' might slang 75s with no issue. The 1:9 '1:9' might be stable for a hundred meters or two, marginally stable for another hundred, then unstable beyond that. The 1:98 '1:9' might not be able to reliably stable 69 grainers and keyhole them if the target is more than a hundred yards away. Lotsa variables. Just because one gun shot at one place fires heavies fine does not mean another very similar gun will be able to. (I have a 1:9 twist AR and went through a period of remorse where I was sad because I was told I couldn't fire >69 so I did TONS of research - fiddled with online calculators that where you can input bullet length, weight, elevation, temp, twist, velocity and see how a few seemingly small changes in any one variable can have a huge impact on stability.) Also - don't worry about firing 75s or 77s unless you're looking for high BC stuff for long range. If you want the bestest terminally effective bullet of all, it isn't a 75 or a 77. It's a 50. 50 TSX, baby! (Only somewhat my opinion. In gel tests its terminal performance is objectively among the best.) And the best thing about a 50 grain is that all of us - the teenage 1:7, the generation alpha 1:8, the millennial 1:9, or even the grizzled baby boomer 1:12 - all can fire a 50 grain and needn't be concerned at all about stability.

If you get a barrel with a 1 in 8 twist, you can stabilize anything that will fit in a magazine. With that said, the problem with the 9 twist issue is that some barrels marks as 9 twist barrels, are actually 8.5 twist barrels. That is the reason for the controversy. A True 9 twist, will give you issues with 75/77 grain bullets. You may get round shot holes, but your groups will be horrible. The last 9 twist Rock River Arms rifle I owned, had a measured twist rate of 1 in 8.5. It shot Mk262 very well. Measure your ACTUAL twist on barrels marked as 1 in 9 and see what you get. I bet you best shooter with 75/77 grain bullets might just be 1 in 8.5.

I find it crazy that consumers are always after the 1:7 twist barrels and yet the most common ammo on the market is M193 or M855. The military tends to go "middle of the road" with the equipment they issue to regular troops-- not that it's bad, it just may not be "the best." With something like "rifle twist rate," they want the widest range in bullet weights possible to work in the gun with decent results, to make logistics easier. As a former soldier, I can't hate that

Specifically Hornday .223 55 grain V-MAX with a best 3 shot 5/8” at 100 yards . Every barrel is going to be different . With time and manufacturing lots it may change with this round for my barrel as well . This is not science but a hit and miss ( no pun intended ) with quality control . Personally I think barrel harmonics plays heavily in accuracy and why I will go to a heavier barrel in a .223 Wilde to be able to shoot a verity of ammunition that falls into what is acceptable to me for hunting purposes .

You are going to be limited to 55 grain or less. 1:14 simply won't stabilize anything above 55. Also, if you shoot in very cold weather, it may not stabilize 55 gr. That is why the Army switched to 1:12 twist because of cold weather problems with 55 grain. The good thing is you have a rare Colt that is worth a hefty price in the collecting market, assuming you have all original parts. If you decide to sell, make sure you have it appraised first so you don't get taken.

You'll find between 50-69 grains to be the sweet spot for 1-9 twist, you can go a tad lower or highr but you're risking destabilizing if you go any higher. SS109 62-grain military ball was optimized for 1/9 twist (though 1/7 was chosen for tracer stability), but you can easily go above 62 grains.. Most 69 grain cartridges tend to shoot pretty good outta 1-9, and as shown in the video many will handle can go even heavier. Every cartridge will shoot differently out of each barrel no matter the weight or twist of the barrel. And if you're looking to get your tightest groups then you're going to want to shoot match grade stuff (ie match kings, bthp, ect) as you won't find the best accuracy with surplus fmj like 55 grain m193 or 62 grain green tip/ss109 ; although some barrels can shoot it pretty good.

Good question. I have not tested anything lighter than 53 gr out of a 1-9 twist or 55 grains out of a 1-8 twist. They were completely stabilized. 1-7 may give you problems below 55 gr with light jacketed bullets. The twist rate is fast enough that some light jacketed bullets may actually come apart mid flight because of the high rpm rate. There are videos showing this. Also, remember that your twist rate doesn't guarantee an accurate gun. You still need to test different bullet weights in your particular rifle. I will hopefully be testing 1-7 twist in the future.

I don't feel that a blanket statement of twist rate does not matter is fair here. If you had shown how 55gr, 62gr and 77 grain shot out of a 1/9 barrel it may be more of a valid argument. I have a rifle with a 1/8 and one with a 1/7. The 1/8 prefers 55gr and will produce 1moa groups. The 1/7 likes 62gr and will produce a 1moa group. If I interchange the bullet weights between these two rifles; the 1/7 with 55gr and 1/8 with 62gr the group sizes open up significantly and approach 3-4moa at 100 yards. If it truly did not matter, there would probably only be one twist rate available for a 5.56 barrel. I am not here to say you are wrong, I think that your video is saying that 1/9 twist can shoot 77gr, not that overall twist rate is irrelevant to the accuracy of any given bullet weight. (Edited for misplaced number)

@PracticalAccuracy 2 жыл бұрын
What you say is true. However, shooting 2-3 inch groups does not mean your bullet is unstable. It just means that your rifle doesn't like a particular load. What I was trying to demonstrate was that the bullet will not be so unstable as to keyhole. 55 will not keyhole in a 1:7 twist. It may or may not shoot good groups. I should have be a little clearer in the video on this. Thank you.

*Thank you for the honest field report. I am not entirely shocked by the results. Black Hills are a fairly good quality ammo with a "fairly warm powder charge"... {usually referred to as 'full power loads'}. I do wonder if the "somewhat valid part of the myth" relates to INFERIOR quality barrels or barrels with poorly cut rifling grooves, improperly cut muzzle faces or barrel crowns &/or "reduced velocity loads" that do exhibit reduced rotations per minute... and, 'lastly', the Pistol / SBR {very short barrels} which also give up some bullet speed and Rotations per minute. Effectually, I 'suspect & speculate' that a 7.5", 8.5" or 10" SHORT barrel firearm with budget grade mystery maker ... loaded with budget grade mystery maker 77 grain {reduced velocity loads} might give different results: such as ... tumble, yaw, key-hole, poor accuracy, etc. Such combinations might be where the myths prove to be true.*

You hit the nail on the head. Every gun is different. Also, with 1:9, if the barrel manufacturer does not cut the rifling accurately, some 1:9 could be closer to 1:10, which will generally not optimally stabilize heavier bullets. You can always measure your rifling to double check the twist. If you don't know how, Midway usa has a short video on youtube showing how it's done. thanks for watching.

"Better" is completely dependent on the barrel design, twist rate and material & process used to construct the barrel. All will stabilize perfectly fine but when it comes to accuracy there's far more variables that take priority above twist rate.

I cut rifling for Proof Research, and to say rifle twist rate doesn't matter is simply wrong. Just because the bullet is stabilized enough not to keyhole does not mean it is optimally stabilized. The bullet may still be rotating around its longitudinal axis so that the tip makes small circles around its vector in flight. This will not result in the best ballistic coefficient. You may get adequate accuracy, even at extended range, but you won't get the best external ballistics, and probably won't get the best accuracy either. It is much easier to under stabilize a bullet than over stabilize a bullet, so the average shooter is probably better off with the faster twists, because it gives them more options. There is a reason long range shooters typically go with fast twist barrels shooting heavy for caliber VLDs. A fast twist gives enough rotational velocity to optimally stabilize longer bullets in more conditions. The military went with the 1:7 twist because the 5.56 M856 tracer round required it to be stabilized in arctic conditions, as cold air is denser than warm air, and therefore requires more rotational velocity to stabilize a projectile. The fact is that no serious fighting rifle in 5.56 has a 1:9 twist. All fighting rifles in 5.56 have twist rates of 1:8 or faster because these twist rates allow for greater flexibility, and provide optimal stabilization for longer projectiles in a wider range of environments. Rifles in .224 cal with 1:9 or slower twists are range toys and varmint rifles.
@PracticalAccuracy
@PracticalAccuracy 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of what you said, but not your conclusions. What I know is that all three 1:9 rifles I shot out to 567 yards were plenty accurate and this could not have been achieved without adequate bullet stability. I shot 3 different rifles to prove I didn't have a one off rifle fluke. I have another A2 rifle 1:9 twist that I shoot (75 gr.) out to 800 yards very accurately, hitting full size IDPA targets. With 4 rifles, the proof is in the pudding. Plus, 99% of civilian shooters won't be shooting in Artic conditions (which I agree can affect bullet stability) or using Military tracers. Also, serious long range competitors may need faster twist rates because they are shooting 80 grain plus VLD's that they cannot magazine feed, but single load into the chamber. I'm not talking about twist rates for them, which I agree may require faster twist rates. I understand that not this does not guarantee that every 1:9 twist will accurately shoot 77 grain bullets, just as a 1:7 cannot guarantee accurate shooting with 77 grain bullets. However, most good quality 1:9 twist barrels with provide enough stability for accurate shooting at distance given the parameters set forth in the video. Thank you for watching, but I respectfully disagree.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 3 жыл бұрын
@@PracticalAccuracy Just because the 1:9 provides adequate results doesn't mean it provides optimal results. You proved that the 1:9 was adequate, but you didn't show that it was equal to or better than a faster twist rifle. You can't escape the fact both ammunition manufactures recommend 1:9 or faster. The 77 gr Sierra Matchking was designed for competition shooting in AR pattern rifles because it will fit inside magazines without the need to single feed. Every single military weapon that has used this bullet, from the old iron sighted M16A2s at Camp Perry to the PRI Mk 12 Mod 0 that the Mk 262 was developed for has a 1:7 twist. The proof is in the pudding, but it doesn't say what you think it says. You proved that the 1:9 might be good enough, not that it was the best, or just as good as other options. The proof in the pudding is that professional end users choose faster twists for those bullets. The proof in the pudding is that 90% of the .224 cal barrels I cut rifling in at Proof Research have a faster twist rate than 1:9. The proof in the pudding is that the entire industry has realized twist rate absolutely matters and that faster twists give you more options.

@@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 I can see there is some misunderstanding about what my video is about. I must not have adequately explained what I was trying to prove and the intended audience. This video was meant for beginning shooters who are told 1. a 1:9 twist barrel cannot stabilize 77 grain bullets and 2. a 1:7 twist barrel cannot stabilize 55 grain bullets. Both of these statements are false. This video was not meant to prove 1:9 twist barrels are better than 1:7 or 1:8. I have no bias either way for any of the barrels. If 1:7 or 1:8 works for someone, more power to them. I in fact shoot several 1:8 twist rifles in other videos. A 1:8 A2 with iron sights at 1000 yards with good results and a 1:8 A4 with 16 power scope at 1000 yards with good results. This video simply shows that a 1:9 twist will stabilize 77 grain bullets at distances most shooters will never even attempt to shoot. Hitting a 12 inch steel plate 9/10 times with 2 different rifles shows this. I also know I can do it out to 800 yards(IDPA 18x30), I just don't' have it on video. Additionally, the boxes I read from said "1:9 twist or faster" not 1:8 twist or faster. With regard to 1:7 twist, I still need to get my hands on a rifle and I know it will show a 1:7 will stabilize 55 grain bullets. If you follow the ar-15 forums, you will see a guy named "Molon" who can shoot a 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards using 55 grain hand loads and a Colt 1:7 twist barrel. I hope this clarifies what I was trying to show.

@@PracticalAccuracy Okay, fine. But telling beginning shooters that twist rate doesn't matter is disingenuous. Twist rate does matter. Interesting that you do not list any qualifications or experience related to this topic. Factual experience on a range at multiple distances and with multiple bullet weights and barrel twist. Fact, a 1/9 barrel will NOT stabilize a 77grain bullet beyond 400 yards. Factual practical testing at Damneck on the rifle range 100 to 500 yards 2008. 3 DPMS match AR15s with 3 different twist rates. Out to 300 yards there is little difference. 400 to 500 performance drops significantly in heavier "longer" bullets in lower twist rate barrels. Past 500 yards, a 77grain bullet from a 1/9 twist barrel may as well be a shotgun. The accuracy loss is significant due to destabilizing of the bullets.

You need to go watch part 2 & 3. Your statements are false given the parameters used within the series. Also, this is purely through my own experience but I have a backyard range out to 533 yards at its furthest point. I have multiple uppers from bcm, SOLGW, Aero, psa, ruger, s&w just to name a few from 1:12 to 1:7 twist rate. At 500 yards I get minimal grouping differences between the 3 most common twist rate barrels when using 55g to 77g cartridges. I certainly get point of impact shifts between the three choices, some of which are up to 10 - 12moa difference BUT all groups are still within 0.2 - 0.5moa from each other. This is of course with the rifle being mounted to a lead sled and using an optic that's ffp with adjustable parallax to keep the closest repeatability possible between all the different uppers. I can't speak for anything past 500 yards but the only time I've ever seen a round keyhole was with my 20" 1:12 twist using 70g+ ammunition.

@PracticalAccuracy
@PracticalAccuracy 3 жыл бұрын
Craig, you are correct that the Ar-15 has evolved into a platform and is not a single caliber/chambering and twist rates will differ. I am also aware of this and thought it was evident from the video that I was only talking about 5.56mm/.223 caliber. I will make a notation in the title or description to note that fact. However, the twist rates that I discuss are applicable to 5.56 Nato, .223 Wylde, and .223 rem chambered rifles. I have shot 5.56mm Nato (77 gr.) ammo and .223 Rem ammo (75 gr. hornady) out of both 5.56 Nato chambered and .223 Wylde chambered rifles (1:9 twist) accurately out to 800 yards. 566 yards in video part 2. I hope to get out to 800 yards when the weather warms. So the point of the video was to show that this can be done accurately with a 1:9 twist rate and 77 gr. 5.56mm/.223 ammo The video was not meant to be a comprehensive discussion of all calibers or twist rates in the Ar-15 platform. Sorry for the confusion.
