Anyone else remember their first time wavedashing? It felt so smooth and beautiful. Watching these videos really rekindle my love for Melee.

How can I perform a wavedash more consistently with characters with a short jumpsquat, like Fox? I've already attempted to press jump and shield simultaneously, and instead of wavedashing my Fox either rolls, spotdodges, or airdodges. Which means I have to press the shield button on the first or second frame after the jump button is pressed, but NOT on the zeroth (simultaneously) nor on the third and above (after the jumpsquat is done). There has to be a rhythm to it, but I keep missing it because of how tight it is!

Carlos Andrés Solís You have to press the shoulder button exactly 3 frames after the jump button for this characters, earlier won’t work and later can make you slide a bit if you only missed by a few frames but it won’t be a perfect wavedash. It’s one of the easier techniques in melee but at the beginning it may seem more complicated to perform than it is, just keep practicing and muscle memory will be formed eventually, learning how to apply it during a match will take you a bit longer though. The only real advice I can give you is to be aware of how are you messing up your inputs when you don’t perform it right, and try to adjust the timing based on that: if you roll/spot-dodge it means you pressed the shoulder button before jump; if you empty hop it means that you pressed the shoulder button too early; if you air-dodge horizontally it means you didn’t angle the control stick correctly; if you air dodge in place it means you weren’t inputing a direction the moment you pressed the shoulder button. As an extra tip try learning the timing keeping the direction on the control stick held constantly, this way you can pay more atencion to the jump-shoulder button sequence. After you have this dominated try inputing the direction after the jump, this will be extremely helpful in the future when you try to wavedash out of shield. Also use the x or y button for jumping, way easier that way. Good luck
