Start with extremely slow and soft practice with a metronome (increasing notch by notch), with movements and motions like a Tai Chi master / pantomimist, is always best.

I loved your gym analogy! I love weight lifting and swimming and it's something I do either right before or after practice. When I do it beforehand, it makes my body feel strong for practice and helps me focus. When I do it afterward, it allows me to reflect on how my practice was good and that I don't need to stress over what I couldn't accomplish in the session. I definitely have days where I'm so hard on myself over not "practicing right" but when I go to the gym, I don't say those things to myself. If I couldn't do as many reps on a weight, I simply tell myself that my body just can't do it today but I still feel great about having done a couple of reps. Funny how I neglect to think that way with practice sometimes so I'm glad you brought up an example I could relate to!

Nathan, thank you so so much for these videos! I know too well many of the problems you mention such as frustrated unsuccessful repetitions of difficult places, problems that seem not to exist in slow tempo and then appearing suddenly, cranking up the tempo way too soon, wanting to have a great result on a first day etc etc... Oh boy, why am I not watching your videos literally 20 years ago. Thank you so much for sharing this all with all of us. Can't wait to see the day 2 and 3...!
