The Shema is the most important prayer the Jewish people have. The Torah commands us to say it twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.
This is the first line and the first paragraph. The second and third paragraph will be on separate videos.

Thank you Chris and Amber for your informative discussions. like most Christian Americans, I have a respect for Judaism and their traditions. I have found many religions with companion texts that are accepted as scripture. some are from learned rabbis, some are from prophets, some are really the word of God through the hand of mortals are mere opinions or misinterpretations of the truth.

Beautifully done! Jesus quotes from the Shema in Matthew 22:37. This passage from Deuteronomy 6:4 is not only an important passage for Jews, but for Christians also. Jesus was, of course, the fulfillment of all the Messianic prophecies in the First (Old) testament and Jesus quoting from the Shema just makes it that much more beautiful.

Thanks for posting this. As a Muslim, I greatly respect the Shema as it encapsulates the belief in Islam : the unity of God and that we should serve God alone. This is echoed by Jesus in Mark 12 28-29 as a poster details below. It is also reminiscent of the very short Surah in the Qur'an, no 112 Say: He is God: One God the Eternal refuge He has not begotten, and neither was He begotten And there is nought like Him.

***** Please keep your Paulianity and your mangling of the pure unity of God to yourself. I prefer to follow the Qur'an which is the words of God, and the words spoken by Jesus, in Mark, and I prefer to give a wide berth to false prophets like Paul who have clearly come to TRY to destroy MONOtheism. Feel free to continue to follow in the fascinating but highly unconvincing theology created by Paul. You will find it a very hard sell to Muslims who have a wonderful peace in knowing that God is One. Good luck friend. If you have time,watch a video by a lovely Christian brother called 'why paul is the apostle of Satan'. All based on scripture [inaccurate though the scriptures are]. May God, the one and only, guide you. ================================ COMMON WORD Qur'an 3:64 Say: 'People of the Book! Come now to a word common between us and you, that we serve none but God, and that we associate not aught with Him, and do not some of us take others as Lords, apart from God.' And if they turn their backs, say: 'Bear witness that we are Muslims.' ========================== TRINITY Qur'an 4:171 People of the Book, go not beyond the bounds in your religion, and say not as to God but the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only the Messenger of God, and His Word that He committed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His Messengers, and say not, 'Three.' Refrain; better is it for you. God is only One God. Glory be to Him -- That He should have a son! To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth; God suffices for a guardian. ========================= Mark 12:28-29 The Greatest Commandment *28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”* *29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.* ======================= Matthew 5: 17-20 *17"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19"Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20"For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.*

***** I'm well aware of the issues you mention Mah, but the facts are simpler than that: 1 - the Bible is unreliable in terms of accurace 2 - Christian theology was created after Jesus left and has nothing to do with him You follow what you like. It is your salvation. But please don't expect me to take this human molded religion as worthy of consideration.

+vicachcoup What gives you the impresssion the Gospels (and perhaps the Torah) were corrupted? Qur’an 3:3-He has revealed to you the Book with truth, verifying that which is before it,and He revealed the Torah and the Gospel aforetime, a guidance for the people, and He sent the Qur’an. Qur’an 6:115-The word of thy Lord doth find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: None can change His words: for He is the one who heareth and knoweth all. Qur’an 18:27-And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord, there is none who can alter His words; and you shall not find any refuge besides Him. The Qur'an establishes that the New Testament (Injil) is the word of Allah. He says NONE can change His words. Do you think Paul is more powerful than Allah? That he can corrupt Allah's incorruptible word?
@vicachcoup
@vicachcoup 8 жыл бұрын
Brandon Hoffman _What gives you the impresssion the Gospels (and perhaps the Torah) were corrupted?_ It is common knowledge to anyone who studies the bible. You must be one of the minority of very literal Christians who holds on to the inerrancy of the Bible. Are you? Quick question: what exactly did the centurion say when Jesus supposedly died on the cross? What does the NT quote his words as? Check all the gospels and let me know it you will. _Qur’an 3:3-He has revealed to you the Book with truth, verifying that which is before it,and He revealed the Torah and the Gospel aforetime, a guidance for the people, and He sent the Qur’an. Qur’an __6:11__5-The word of thy Lord doth find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: None can change His words: for He is the one who heareth and knoweth all. Qur’an __18:27__-And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord, there is none who can alter His words; and you shall not find any refuge besides Him._ The most amazing thing about Christians is that they have elaborate interpretations and justiications for their doctrines. And they will also use great intellectual creativity when trying to make the case for an inerrant Bible. But when it comes to analysing the Quran, they develop a very unsophisticated and rigid understanding of it, choosing to use selective quotes and to ignore contexts and other texts on the issue at hand. _The Qur'an establishes that the New Testament (Injil) is the word of Allah._ Prove that the NT is the Injeel my friend. I would like you to give me a scholarly explanation of exactly what the Quran means by the Injeel. What does Injeel mean? _He says NONE can change His words. Do you think Paul is more powerful than Allah? That he can corrupt Allah's incorruptible word?_ Paul just wrote his own words. This was added to the canon. Please explain how God's own words were changed and where? PS - do you know what the Bible actually is? Who wrote the books and gospels? How was the canon decided on? Who did the deciding? What was the criterion? What does the quran mean when it talks about people of the book who hide part of their scriptures or that there are people who write their own words and then claim it was from God etc?

Look even in the Book of Genesis, the word Elohim is plural. It signifies that God is truly beyond our understanding, truly infinite and eternal and boundless. God can do anything He wants, even incarnate as humanity's Mashiach.

Kevin, it is unfortunate you could not get full information from a rabbi, who is expected to specialize in this area. The tune is one of the multiple ones employed among the Jews -- the eastern Ashkenazic melody that was originally invented in Poland and Lithuania, probably in the Middle Ages or somewhat afterwards. Jews of the Yemenite, various Sephardic, Italian, western Ashkenazic and Oriental diasporas created other melodic lines for these passages.

She-ma yisrael, adonai eloheinu, adonai echad Hear O’ Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One This verse is followed by one line of text that is traditionally recited in an undertone: בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹד מַלְכוּתוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד Baruch shem kavod malchuto l’olam va-ed Blessed is the name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever The remainder of the Shema prayer is taken from three biblical sources: Deuteronomy 6:5-9: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. Impress them upon your children. Recite them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead, inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. You shall gather in your new grain and wine and oil- I will also provide grass in the fields for your cattle-and thus you shall eat your fill. Take care not to be lured away to serve other gods and bow to them. For the LORD’s anger will flare up against you, and He will shut up the skies so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its produce; and you will soon perish from the good land that the LORD is assigning to you. Therefore impress these My words upon your very heart: bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead, and teach them to your children-reciting them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up; and inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates- to the end that you and your children may endure, in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to assign to them, as long as there is a heaven over the earth. The LORD said to Moses as follows: Speak to the Israelite people and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout the ages; let them attach a cord of blue to the fringe at each corner. That shall be your fringe; look at it and recall all the commandments of the LORD and observe them, so that you do not follow your heart and eyes in your lustful urge. Thus you shall be reminded to observe all My commandments and to be holy to your God. I the LORD am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I, the LORD your God.

According to Biblical Hebrew, what we know as in English as the tetragrammation as usual is devoid of Jewish idioms. This is a variation of Matres Lectionis (singular: Mater lectionis) in where the consonants were actually "mothers of reading" and served as place holders for the niqudot that were associated with them. And so, The Name is an airy 4-part vowel sound as in ee-ah-oo-ah or Yahu-ah (spoken in 4 distinct parts).

You shall love the L-rd your G‑d with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you today shall be upon your heart. You shall teach them thoroughly to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for a reminder between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.

I am not hebrew, except (like all mankind) by descent. Is the commandment to say this prayer twice a day Really in the Torah itself, or is it in the "companion scriptural texts."
@andreajohnson6030
@andreajohnson6030 9 жыл бұрын
James L As Torot are plural, yes, this is in the Torah. If you're asking if it's in the oral or the written Torah, it's written that the Sh'ma should be said "when you get up and when you lie down" in Devarim. Twice-daily recitation of the Sh'ma is a mitzvah; since you are not Jewish (and humanity is not Hebrew, it has its birth, I'm happy to say to people like you, in Africa), you are not required to fulfill mitzvot. You may wish to be careful poopooing on "companion scriptural texts", as such things are why the Hebrew you see here has vowel markings and is not simply consonants. I assume you do not read Hebrew without vowels when you attempt it.
