Hello KZbinrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.
Welcome to Practice Session #9! This video covers 8 exercises and 2 bonus exercises to practice which will help improve your confidence, which in turn will make you a better, safer motorcycle rider.
Again we had a great time and was blessed with good weather. This video was recorded on Sunday, January 24, 2020 in Pooler, GA. So if you want to check out Al, Loren, Bill, Jerry, James & Hunter practicing and well on their way to becoming the BOSS of their motorcycles, get a snack and come on in!

I did what Al did when I got my first "big" bike. That bike as a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager and it actually weighed just under 1k lbs! I tried to pedal it along as it was falling over. When it got to the point that I knew it was going to drop i just let it go but it caught my foot and all 1k lbs of it came down (rear crash bar) on the outside edge of my right foot and pinned me face down to the concrete. This was in a parking garage and I couldn't get the bike off my foot until someone heard me and came to the rescue. It basically broke my foot right down the middle (look up lisfranc fracture) and I was on crutches for 8 months! First thing I did after recovery was trade that Vulcan in on a 2019 Street Glide which has a lower seat height (I am 5'7") and then signed up for classes!! Long winded message but I wanted to share what has made me diligent and vigilant when it comes to slow speed riding!

Never too long when you’re sharing knowledge. Thanks for this! My ankle suffered in the last as well. I didn’t break anything, but it was sprained pretty bad. It definitely aids in learning that putting your foot down is NOT the thing to do. Preload and keep it loaded and if you feel like you’re going to fall, open the clutch hand a little more, or a lot more depending on the situation. 👍🏾

Robert back in the 80's I taught motorcycle safety courses for Ohio. And helped a friend set up classes at a local college for people who have never ridden before to help them get licensed. If I'd of had the knowledge you teach I for sure incorporated it into my classes and put out much better riders. Kudos to you and thank you for your service !!!!

Thanks Robert for doing what your doing out there helping to raise confidence and skill levels for us riders. I'm watching from Nova Scotia and if you ever get a chance to come ride up here take it because the roads are good and the scenery is amazing. I guess I'm a preloader I've been subscribing to the likes of you, Jerry Paladino, Kevin @ MC Rider ever since picking up my '97 Honda Shadow ACE 1100 in Sept. of 2019 and then having to endure a winter before getting out for some good rides on it. After not being on a bike for 24 years I figured I'd take the winter to watch and learn and I was very surprised what I didn't know about riding even tho I had a motorcycle since I was 9 years old and having my last one before this a V65 Magna (I called it the "Flying V"). Once I got back on I've been practicing every ride I get out on, no problem left or right in the 18', maybe even a little less, or the figure 8 although I haven't been scraping the floorboards yet doing that I have a couple times at higher speeds. Out on a 1200 km trip around the south shore of good old NS last summer I was in a little hot on a corner and pushed on that handle bar to make her lean and turn and got a pretty good scrape lol, without the knowledge of counter steering before hand I'm not sure how that would have come out! We don't have anyone around here, to my knowledge, doing what your doing but I'm actively searching for other enthusiasts and considering joining up with Defenders MC to see about any interest there. Love the ride, can't get enough! Keep up the good work maybe I'll be able to catch up with you sometime once the world returns to normal again. Take care! Safe Riding Craig in NS

My pleasure Pedro. Keep practicing and try to keep in mind the weight of the bike is not that much of a factor when using the proper techniques. What you do to keep a 300 lb. motorcycle upright is exactly the same as with a 900 lb. motorcycle.👍🏾

Mr Jerry did a great job thru the basic course. As that course was set up Id rate his performance at least an 8. More like a 9. He made very few if any mistakes. Id say if he loaded the throttle and kept it loaded his rating wouuld be a 10. Those bonus exercises are a challange. When I can go thru the basic course as set up with only minor errors Ill give myself an 8 and be done except for regular proficiency practice. Great job helping us with the skiills to confidently be the boss of our motorcycles Robert!

Exercise 3 and 4 make the bottom of my feet hurt and I grit my teeth every time I watch the riders perform it. I had to make a right turn the other day from a stop at a traffic light. I heard your voice throttle up trust and believe then I looked where I wanted the bike to go. Thank you for another practice session! I hope Al is feeling better and gets his ankle checked out. Great to see people improving with your help. Lol I can stop with back brake, front brake one foot down etc . One time years ago I put one foot down and right into AC water puddle on pavement paint. After that I went to stop and both feet down . Lol plus live in south Florida. Plenty of AC puddles and the lights are 5 -7 minutes long. But I’ll be sure to re freshen back up on one foot only . Thank you for your time and effort..
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy. Just know that covering the rear brake when stopped is a good habit to have, but you won't always do it. like for instance, waiting at a light that's 5-7 minutes long, or having to reach in your saddlebag for something. As long as you bring the motorcycle to a stop with the rear brake only, that's the most important thing.👍🏾
@karenshoucairmcgray4902
@karenshoucairmcgray4902 3 жыл бұрын
Lol......I am just the opposite. I am used to left foot down right foot covering the rear brake only when coming to a stop and then I will put the other foot down if I need to. I find it hard to stop with both feet down. I think the trick is being very light on that front brake. Any upset to the bike and you are going over. Lol. Thank you for the tip on the AC puddles.

You’re not kidding about how so many of us have wives that like to lean over and start talking at a stop.. That stuff can catch a dude off guard if not expecting it. Mine keeps doing it when we are pulling up to a stop .. like below 5mph.. Next time I get to practice I want to work on preloading when pulling to a stop. Before seeing your vid on stopping I kinda just figured out that the bike comes to a slow stop much more stable when transferring to the rear from the front when getting down below 10mph-ish. I didn’t think to preload when stopping and giving some friction zone action against the rear brake to stabilize more when coming to a stop. Man.. I keep finding so much gold in these vids.. gems of knowledge and stuff to practice And stuff I didn’t even know I was doing wrong that I need to work on. * LOL DUDES THROTTLE HAS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION. Dying laughing over here

Awesome vid, Rob. You are an excellent mentor. From my observations about the right turn from a stand still .... we all are used to making RH turns onto the street. but when the guys are making LH turns .... they fixate on the outer cones..... What if you removed the cones and doubled them up on the left, and said " I want you to skirt the traffic island as close as is safe", and see if their performance improves next time around?, ( in the next video ). (It seems like they are fixating right side as they would in a LH turn to avoid a traffic island or stopped vehicles). Stay Safe !
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle

Thanks Wes. You’re right they are fixated on the cones, but moving them is not the answer. Getting them to not look at the cones at all is the answer. Mostly everyone get better the more they do it. It takes time. Some will get it in a day, but most will not. They just have to keep practicing. But thanks for the thought.👍🏾

Hey Ben. Thanks. Al will be ok. No broken bones. I'm very happy that my channel as been beneficial to you! Regarding your suggestion, as you already can see, the videos are pretty long. So a 2 hour video takes me approximately 6+ hours to edit and that's if everything goes smoothly, which unfortunately isn't always the case. Therefore, that suggestion will not be honored. Robert, HogLeverage.com, you can buy an Oberon clutch that has a dial which will allow you to adjust the travel and make it easier to find the friction zone. !!! Please explain every time you ban and give punishments for using front brake exactly the reasons for it. !!! Explain that front brake it's a must in EMERGENCY BRAKING, can and should be used in many other situations but NEVER in slow cornering techniques. Some could be missleed into never using the front brake or use it improperly and it's extremely DANGEROUS. I suggest you to include emergency braking in your exercises. Btw, great videos.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Also thank you for the compliment. I’ve explained several times, including in this video, that during slow speed riding, the front brake shouldn’t be used because it will put your bike down. I’ve also given specific speeds (15 mph or less) when not to use the front brake. 👍🏾
@bkumtt-snghudforhand2note407
@bkumtt-snghudforhand2note407 3 жыл бұрын
I saw your explanation in the video but my concern is that someone might understand that in an emergency brake after the speed decreases at 15 mph you should release the front brake and use only rear brake ( very ineffective - your rear tire has almost no grip at that moment since the weight is shifted to front ). I'm not an expert by any mean but there are enough misconceptions among riders about front brake, that's why I suggested you to include an emergency brake exercise, so the less experienced rider can clearly make the difference between emergency brake and your exercises .
