I think the Philharmonic cut is much closer to what you normally play. It sounds more comfortable and can take the amount of air you want to give it! The Venti sounded like it couldn't really handle your air. What a fun way to practice while your flute is in for its COA! :) (I always found the Powell mechanism to feel a little strange as well. Its so different from Muramatsu!)

The Venti is so powerful, rich, and dark. The Philharmonic has a brighter sound, a little more “friendly” and super smooth.

The Philharmonic hands down. Cleaner and brighter, which I think is more important for bigger halls and orchestra gigs.

I'm definitely more find if the Venti cut, because you have so much more tone color and the response in the low and middle registers sounds a lot cleaner. I always felt like wings stifled my opportunities to play with color. Both of them had that singing quality that I love in Powell flutes. And both of them decibel sound lovely! I just like the one without wings better

Love this channel and the vlogmas series. Never knew the combination of flutist and youtube influencer would work so well. I'm an adult who picked the flute up again after a 25+ year break after playing for 6 years as a kid. I hope I one day will be able to play as well as you do.

P. I think the wings add a sharpness and clarity too the sound. The venti seemed like you were working so hard. But none of him honestly had the sparkle that you have on the murmatsu. I think you chose the right instrument for you when you chose that one.

I think it’s time to switch you brand. You sound more liquidity and fluid like velvet with a Powell. I also think the soldered tone holes is something you may not be use to. The venti headjoint gives a robust fullness and the philharmonic gives you a more lyric singing dolce sound

The Rubank!!! Thats what my private clarinet instructor started me on when i first started lessons. Ive also never seen The Polar Express. I love the P Cut Headjoint.

Both head joints have its own charm. But I prefer the philharmonic cut you played as second, it’s sounds more balanced for me.

i play on a custom sterling silver powell! i was excited to see you try a powell! i love the way the philharmonic cut sounded but they were both stunning!

I recently bought a Powell headjoint with the “lumina” cut after a blind trial that included all of the Powell headjoint cuts and headjoints from a bunch of other brands. I feel like it struck a good balance of playability while still giving me a really nice range of tone colors to play with.

The Philharmonic cut sounds more centered and compact, sweeter. I found the Venti louder, darker, maybe a little less flexible. I don't think you'd have as many color options on the Venti. Love the Vaughan Williams Fantasia!

I prefer the clarity and richness of the Venti, but I myself have a very dark tone, so that's my personal preference! 😁 I'm curious as to why you didn't sample some excerpts in the higher octave on both head joints? When I'm trialing instruments or head joints I like to explore the entire range of the instrument. Just wondering!

I played the Coleridge Christmas Overture in our wind ensemble this year. Never heard of the piece before and I’d have to give it a “meh, it was ok” rating. 🫤
