I know the video is old, but as a person just reviewing concepts that was taught to me 20 years ago in school, the presenter took into consideration of everyone's level of ability and ensure she doesnt skip a step and make someone confused. Going thru 1 hour of lecture, I felt like I have recovered at least 50% of the ability to do math from High School. Please pass on a thank you to this girl in the video for me Mometrix!

This is all great, the problem is you only get 14.4 seconds to read the question and do the math! As a specialty mechanic with 35 years experience, I find this test as a less than honest interpretation of how qualified I am to build a transmission.

+Spike Ralph I think it would be more fair if you were given an hour rather than 15 minutes to finish the test. But then the math questions would have to be made more difficult to compensate for that. The way it's set up now, you really don't have time to write down even basic algebraic equations. It all has to be done mentally. I guess it weeds out dyslexic people or people with poor reading skills, which has little to do with math.
@culwin6 жыл бұрын
What they don't teach you in the video is how to do all this quickly in your head. You can get the answer even faster, sometimes, if you can estimate it in your head. That would be like having a test on how to build a transmission, and a person goes through every single step in the manual on how to do it - an expert wouldn't need to do this, they would just put it together quickly. I can solve all these questions quickly, but I'm not writing anything down - I'm doing all of it (or sometimes just part of it) in my head. But of course you have to start with the long explanation, before you can learn to do it quicker.

I think what's not covered here is the ability to use logic to narrow down answers and save time without calculating the entire equation. Since time is so limited on these tests, it's necessary to be able to do this. We are, to start with, making the assumption that one answer, and only one answer, is the correct one. At 5:18, when we are simplifying the expression, we can start by looking at just the first term, which is easy to do mentally. 2x^4 times 5x^2 is 10x^6. Now look at the answer possibilities. (b) and (c) are impossible because they do not contain the term (10x^6). We've already narrowed it down to two of the four possible answers. Then we continue with the next term. y^3 times y^7 is y^10. The only answer that contains both (10x^6) and (y^10) is (d). WE DON'T HAVE TO WASTE TIME CALCULATING THE ENTIRE EQUATION!
@MometrixTestPrep6 жыл бұрын
You can sometimes eliminate answers in problems. Our purpose here is to teach the concepts you will need to know to be successful on the exam. It should not take near as long to complete a problem when you aren't trying to teach the step-by-step process to someone else. We do also have an excellent Wonderlic Study Guide on our website if you would like further review. You can read all about it at www.mometrix.com/studyguides/wonderlic.

Great teaching, I'd have no problem doing some of these longer equations in about 1-1 1/2 minutes less than 15 seconds is a joke, for me at least. If they feel this is actually necessary to be done before a job I am applying for, clearly I am not good enough for their job!
@jeffw12676 жыл бұрын
Some take more time, but you should be able to answer some of them in just a couple of seconds. So it averages out to some extent. The extreme time limit is why perfect scores are so rare. 20/50 is considered average on these tests, which means you are missing 3 out of every 5. A 35 score is fantastic, and a 40 score is brilliant.

Exercises are explained well, however many of the questions seems to have obvious answers if your math concepts are clear. If the test have lots of questions this is not the way to go, you must discard ridiculous answers and then do some math to get only one option at the end. I think discarding options is the way to go.

But isn't the object of this exercise to do as much of the problem in your head as you can so you can figure out which of the answers is correct, not do the whole problem step by step? For example the 12x3x9 prisim. 12x3 is easy enough to do in your head... 36. 36X9 is hard because of the carry but 36 X 10 is 360 so its 36 less than 360. There is only one close to 330ish so that one is correct. All of the other ones are way off. Isn't the test designed to test your ability to rise up above the math and see the big picture? That is why the test is so short in time and long in questions? I'm genuinely asking. i will have to take one of these test this week. Regardless, this was a great video to help me remember some of the basics such as foil and factoring.
