About lesson: Can you remember a time when you saw a new Portuguese word and thought to yourself, "hmmm, that sure looks a lot like a word in my own language!"
Rather than waiting years to slowly discover these words yourself over time, in this lesson we show you a set of simple rules you can use to quickly add thousands of Portuguese words to your vocabulary.
Note: We usually record audio-only, so we take a few minutes to loosen up to the camera! But if you can bear with us through the beginning, we promise the material will be worth it.

false friends can be hilarious. My father-in-law (fluent in French) ordered a "gateau" (cake) in a cafe. The waiter was in despair, as my fil kept insisting "gateau, gateau, gateau". In the end, the waiter did bring him a gato (cat) :D Makes me smile everytime I hear the word gato/gateau!

Has anyone found a cheat sheet with all these 5000 words. This has given me the motivation i needed to continue learning. Once i can get through these 5000 then maybe after 2/3000 more words i will improve my vocabulary significantly.

I also had a terrible time with French, and (it was years and years ago...) I just couldn't master the language even though they taught it in school every day. I'm a Costa Rican living in Portugal, and as a Spanish speaker should be easier for me to learn as the languages are really similar, but the truth is, in Spanish we have much more «falsos amigos» so is easier to make mistakes like Joel did!
