I have actually experienced this where I get frustrated, leave the lick or passage, come back the next day (or two days later if I'm really salty) and lo and behold! I play it perfectly. Only once of course.

This was such a blast to make. There are a couple more videos Chad and I made - stay tuned for those! In the meantime, though there is no actual magic pill (darn), there will be a lot of valuable lessons at Chad LB's Virtual Saxophone Workshop, happening August 19th-22nd. There will be 16 masterclasses (I'm giving one about the the science behind warmup exercises + examples), held through Zoom. For people that purchase a Full-Access Pass, you will have 30-day streaming access to watch any masterclass from the Workshop you may have missed, or just want to watch again. If you'd like to join the workshop, please feel free to use my coupon code "Saxologic" for $50 dollars off any ticket choice you decide. Link to sign up is in my description!

This is so relatable. When I first started playing Trumpet, there was this Clifford Brown lick I liked and I transcribed it. I struggled so much when I tried to play it and I threw a tantrum much like Nathan did. I went to my mentor the next day and he told me "Just relax bro." (The magic pill). And I played the lick perfectly, not at the full tempo though. It was such an achievement that I felt like I don't need to practice it again and have since forgotten how to play it. I should check it out again.

I tell my students it's like cooking a big pot of soup. You gotta put in all your ingredients (slow practice) but when it's not fully ready you can't keep adding seasoning to force it to taste good (over-practicing, speeding up too quickly, and making silly mental mistakes). Instead you gotta put a lid on it and let it simmer (take a break and let your brain do it's magic to solidify those new pathways). It will always taste better when it's had time for the flavors to meld and you will sound better if you trust your brain to do it's job.
