here's the thing about it: If you ONLY practice on pillows, you'll have a hard time playing normally. But who ONLY practices on pillows? The pillow thing is exclusively for building strength and speed. You should be spending at least as much time everyday practicing on proper surfaces (pad, actual drum set, etc.). If you do both, you'll have the great chops from the pillow AND the ability to transfer those chops over to actual playing!

@splashy44 A great point. The problem with that is you need build muscle first before you can control it. If you don't build the muscle to do singles on a pillow, then you're never going to get clean singles to be any fast on a drum. Also, practicing on a no rebound surface helps you to become more well rounded percussionist. Mallet instruments and auxiliary percussion instruments have almost no rebound, and even some drums like the floor tom he mentioned have no rebound.

A great test for finding out if pillow-playing is working, is to play on the leg... just behind the kneecap. If it hurts... it's back to the pillow. The benefits of pillow-playing are many - the practice teaches a player how to play on the "up-stroke". Wonderful forearm, wrist and finger tension-control. Important video. Well done.

@pur3pker131 wrong, watch Tony Williams, every drummer should be able to play at any tempo on any surface WITH or WITHOUT rebound. Rebound is useful and helps but your gonna be slowed down on the tons if you rely on it. This won't mess you up when you get on the kit unless your playing and practicing wrong in the first place.

I was in a drum corps with a guy who did pretty much all his individual practice on a pillow, and he developed tendinitis issues in the middle of the season... also i think he played on his snare as tho he was playing on a pillow, fighting the rebound. For a while I said "never practice on a pillow", now I believe it's definitely helpful in moderation.... also it's important to adapt your technique to whatever surface you're playing on... many people don't do this.

(continued from last comment) The 'pillow' stroke, where you use your wrist to lift the stick and throw it back down to get successive strokes, is useful if you are playing a ghost note immediately followed by an accented note, such as in a shuffle. In this case, the ghost note does not offer the power of the rebound to lift the stick, so it's up to your wrist to get it up far enough that when you throw it back down, you have a good-sized accent. Cheers!

my first drum set was a bunk bed, the bottom mattress was my snare, I had an old couch pillow as my tom(one side was loose for lower sound and the other was tighter for higher sound), the bottom frame of the top bunk was used for my cymbals. and if I wasn't playing on my drum set I was using my practice pad which was my left thigh which had toughened up like a Muay Thai fighters shin. My younger brother is a drummer as well and that's how we would practice till we got our real kits.

I went to a John Riley clinic and he made a good point about why practicing on a pillow is not a good idea. By practicing on a pillow, you're practicing lifting the stick instead of utilizing the natural rebound. By training this way, you're training to play fast on a pillow, which is obviously the opposite feel of a drum, so when are you ever gonna play on a pillow?
@colourfulwithaU
@colourfulwithaU 12 жыл бұрын
John Riley has a point - and I admire him as a musician and educator - but at the same time, I see the merit in practicing on a pillow, especially double strokes. I can think of two good reasons why: 1) Some parts of the drum set don't offer you that natural rebound - such as some floor toms, and the edge of the hihats. 2) Even on the snare, if you want to play an accented note immediately following a ghost note, there will be no rebound to lift the stick in time to catch that accent.

Even so, you dont want to do it because drumming is about learning to control the rebound you get. If you practice with no rebound, when you get on a drum youll have no idea what to do with it once you get it.

Enough pros have recommended it. However, the best test is to do it at least say three months or more and then compare your playing. Whatever technique you choose, Spivak, Gladstone, Moeller, Fingers Only, one needs to put a sufficient amount of practice time for it to work. Many get discouraged because they don’t achieve after long hours of practice, but only for two days, because the muscles are sore! Yep, you need to rest and then go back...it is not something won in two days practice....

Controlling the stick is the secret to getting a proper tone out of a snare drum. If you hold the stick too tight so that the wood is not "ringing" on the vibrating skin, it chokes all the sound out of the drum skin. The skin has to make a "wave" - in a horizontal movement. This must be coordinated with the vertical movement of the stick. When you get it dialed, the notes are very crisp, clear and not "muddy".

I wouldn't practice on a pillow a lot though, because you will begin to ignore occurrences when playing the actual drums because you will have developed a way of playing through the drums instead of out of the drums. A good way to keep this from happening is practicing with a towel on your snare instead and over time add more layers. ( got this from jojo mayer btw)

This is very good advice but when I practice on my pillow and then go to the drum kit it feels like its even harder to get my wrists going because the snare rebound actually makes it harder but idk if I'm doing something wrong. The value in practicing on a pillow is that you are working on lifting the stick with your wrist *for rare cases in which the rebound will not work for you*. When you play regular strokes on the drums, the stick naturally wants to rebound. If you try to do all the work with your wrist all the time, you will feel tension (tension is to be avoided, it means you're close to injuring yourself), and you are working against a force that wants to work in your favour (rebound).
